You cannot change a Hostinger VPS location in place. To move it to another country or data center, make an independently verified backup, reinstall the VPS in the destination shown in hPanel, rebuild the software stack, restore your files and databases, and then update the new IP address everywhere it is used. Reinstallation permanently deletes the original server, including its Hostinger backups and snapshots, so do not start until you have a downloadable recovery copy.
What happens when you move a Hostinger VPS
Hostinger fixes a VPS location after the server is created. The supported alternative is a destructive reinstall in a different location. During that process, the VPS is recreated in the selected data center rather than physically moved with its existing disk.

The recreated server receives a new IP address. Your websites, APIs, monitoring systems, firewall allowlists, scripts, mail records and other IP-dependent integrations therefore need a cutover plan. DNS changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate according to Hostinger’s current support guidance, although individual resolvers may update sooner.
Hostinger warns that reinstalling in a new location permanently deletes all existing data, including backups and snapshots. A snapshot stored on the VPS platform is not an independent recovery copy. Download your backup to another system before opening the reinstall workflow.

Choose the migration method
There are two practical designs. The first is reinstalling the existing VPS in place; the second is creating a separate destination VPS, migrating to it, and deleting or retiring the source only after validation.

Use reinstall-in-place only when the outage and recovery plan are acceptable. A parallel VPS is the safer choice for production systems, mail servers, databases with strict availability requirements, or any service for which an immediate rollback matters.

Do not treat a website archive as a complete VPS backup. Record the server’s state and collect every item needed to reproduce it.
Back up application and user data
- Website and application files, uploads, media, generated assets and private storage.
- Database dumps for every database, including users, permissions, routines and scheduled events where your database engine supports them.
- Environment files, secrets and application configuration. Store them securely rather than leaving credentials in an openly readable archive.
- SSH private keys and authorized-key configuration, with a documented way to install new keys on the destination.
- Cron jobs for system users and application users.
- Mailboxes, mail spools, aliases, filters and delivery configuration if the VPS handles email.
Back up the server configuration
- Web-server virtual hosts, reverse-proxy rules and upstream definitions.
- TLS certificate files and renewal configuration, while protecting private keys.
- Firewall rules, security-group or port settings, fail2ban configuration and other access controls.
- Service definitions, systemd unit files, supervisor configurations and startup scripts.
- DNS zone information and a list of every record that points to the old IP.
- External integration details: payment gateways, webhooks, API allowlists, monitoring, backup destinations and third-party callbacks.
- Operating-system release, installed package versions, language runtimes, container images, control-panel version and virtualization type.
- License keys and license-assignment information. Hostinger-purchased licenses are not portable to the new VPS.
Verify the backup before destroying anything
Download the archive through SFTP, FTP or another independent method, then inspect it on a separate machine. Open representative files, list archive contents, and restore a database dump into a temporary database when the application is important enough to justify the check. A backup that was never downloaded or tested is not a reliable recovery plan.
Keep at least one copy outside the VPS account. Reinstallation removes Hostinger backups and snapshots associated with the current server, so neither can be your only copy.
Check compatibility and destination capacity
The destination must be able to run the same workload. Select equal or greater capacity and confirm that the operating system, software versions, control panel and virtualization arrangement are compatible with your backup and migration method.

- Confirm CPU, memory, storage and bandwidth requirements from the current workload.
- Record listening ports and make sure the new firewall policy permits only the services that should be public.
- Confirm that the required operating-system packages and language runtimes are available for the destination image.
- Prepare empty databases with the correct character sets and users before importing production dumps.
- Check whether your control panel supports export and import on the selected operating system.
- Inventory integrations that identify the server by IP rather than hostname.
Do not assume that a location shown in an older guide is still offered. Hostinger says the final list of selectable locations is the list displayed in the dashboard during setup or the server-transfer process. Capacity and availability can change, and the dashboard list is authoritative at the time you perform the operation.
Reinstall the VPS in a new Hostinger location
The following path uses the current hPanel labels described by Hostinger. Labels can vary slightly by account interface, but the workflow remains a VPS plan detail and location change followed by a destructive reinstall.
- Sign in to hPanel and open VPS.
- Select the VPS you intend to move.
- Open VPS Plan details.
- Click Change or the location edit control.
- Select the desired location from the locations currently offered in the dashboard.
- Read the data-loss warning. Confirm that you have downloaded the files, databases, configuration, mail data and keys you need.
- Click Next to begin the reinstall.
Starting the operation is the point of no return for the current VPS contents. If the backup is incomplete, stop before clicking the confirmation button. The reinstall cannot be treated as a temporary location switch, and it is not reversible by changing the location again.
Rebuild the destination server
Install the operating system and base security
Choose the operating system required by your application and install the packages and runtimes recorded in your inventory. Create administrative access, install your SSH keys, apply updates, set the hostname and timezone, and configure the firewall before exposing the application.
Recreate service accounts with the permissions expected by the application. Restore web-server and reverse-proxy configuration only after the corresponding packages are installed, and validate configuration syntax before restarting services.
Transfer files with SSH, SCP or SFTP
Hostinger identifies SSH as the most efficient transfer method because it enables a direct server-to-server copy. When both the source and destination are reachable, use a protected account and copy into a temporary directory before setting final ownership.

scp -r /path/to/application user@NEW_SERVER_IP:/temporary/restore/For large trees, an archive can preserve paths and permissions more predictably:
tar czf application-backup.tar.gz /path/to/application
scp application-backup.tar.gz user@NEW_SERVER_IP:/temporary/restore/Extract the archive, inspect ownership and permissions, and move files into the final document root only after the destination configuration is ready. If direct server-to-server transfer is unavailable, download the backup to your workstation or another storage system and upload it to the new VPS with SFTP or FTP.

Handle the OpenVZ-to-KVM edge case
Hostinger notes that direct SCP, rsync and WHM transfers may be impossible when both servers are in the same location in an OpenVZ-to-KVM scenario. When that limitation applies, use the manual route: download the data from the source, then upload it to the destination. Do not keep retrying a transfer method that the virtualization combination does not support.
Restore databases
Install the database engine and create empty databases and users before importing dumps. Import each dump using the engine’s native client, then verify tables, row counts where practical, application credentials, character-set settings and scheduled jobs. Update the application’s environment or configuration files so they point to the destination database host, port, database name and credentials.
Do not switch DNS until the application can connect to the restored database locally and complete representative read and write operations on the new server.
Restore control-panel data where applicable
If the source uses a control panel with its own backup format, restore through that panel only after installing a compatible version. A panel backup may not include operating-system firewall rules, external DNS, system-level cron jobs, custom binaries or credentials outside the panel, so compare the restored server against the inventory rather than assuming the panel archive is complete.

Update the new IP and dependent services
A recreated VPS receives a different IP. Make a written list of every place that contains the old address and update it during the cutover.
- Change DNS A records for websites and services. Update AAAA records only if the new server has a correctly configured IPv6 address; do not leave an obsolete address published.
- Reissue or reconfigure TLS certificates if validation depends on the old address or if the web-server paths were not restored.
- Replace IP allowlists in payment providers, databases, SaaS dashboards, firewalls, CI systems and partner APIs.
- Update monitoring targets, uptime checks, alert rules, backup destinations and deployment scripts.
- Change hard-coded IPs in application configuration, cron scripts, webhook endpoints and documentation used by operators.
- Review reverse DNS or hostname settings if your provider or mail recipients require them.
Mail-specific work
If the VPS sends or receives mail, migrate mail spools and mailbox data, recreate aliases and filters, and verify the mail services before changing DNS. Update SPF to authorize the new sending IP, publish the correct DKIM key for the rebuilt server, and review DMARC alignment and policy records. Test inbound and outbound delivery separately; a web application can appear healthy while mail is still using stale DNS or authentication data.
Test before and after DNS cutover
Use the new IP or a temporary hosts-file entry to test the destination without waiting for public DNS. Check the application from an unauthenticated browser session and from an administrator account, then exercise the operations that matter to users.

- Log in, create or edit a record, upload a file and complete a representative transaction.
- Check database reads and writes, background jobs, queues, workers and scheduled tasks.
- Verify TLS, redirects, static assets, uploads, API callbacks and authentication.
- Send and receive test mail if mail is hosted on the VPS.
- Inspect service logs, disk usage, memory consumption, CPU load and failed systemd units.
- Confirm that backups run from the new server and can be downloaded.
When the destination passes these checks, lower-risk DNS records can be changed to the new IP. DNS caches may continue returning the old address for a period governed by each record’s TTL. Hostinger advises allowing up to 24 hours for propagation, so monitor both addresses during the transition when the source is still available.

- Freeze deployments and record the final time at which application writes are allowed on the source.
- Take a final database dump and copy changed files so the destination contains the latest state.
- Put applications into maintenance mode when consistency requires a short write pause.
- Update DNS and IP-based integrations to the destination address.
- Confirm the destination serves production traffic and watch logs, resource usage, errors, queue depth and mail delivery.
- Keep the external backup and, for a parallel migration, the source VPS untouched until the agreed rollback window ends.
- If the destination fails, restore DNS to the source where possible, correct the destination, and repeat the final synchronization before another cutover.
For an in-place reinstall there is no live source to which you can instantly switch back. Recovery means rebuilding the VPS again and restoring from the independent backup. That is why a parallel destination is generally preferable when downtime or data loss would be costly.
Common failure modes
The old site works but the new one shows a default page
The DNS record may still point to the old IP, or the destination web server may not have the correct virtual-host configuration. Test by IP or a temporary hosts-file entry, then inspect the selected hostname, document root and reverse-proxy upstream.

Users see intermittent results during propagation
Different resolvers can cache old and new answers for different periods. Keep both configurations valid during the transition when possible, monitor requests arriving at each address, and allow up to 24 hours for propagation as Hostinger advises.

The application cannot connect to its database
Check that the database service is running, the restored user exists, the password in the application matches, the bind address and firewall permit the intended connection, and the application is not still using the old server IP.
SSH or transfer tools fail
Verify the destination IP, SSH port, key permissions and firewall rules. If the migration crosses the OpenVZ-to-KVM limitation Hostinger describes, use an intermediate download and manual upload instead of direct SCP, rsync or WHM transfer.
A license stops working
Hostinger-purchased licenses do not transfer to the new VPS. Check license portability before the move and obtain a valid license assignment for the destination where required.
Mail is rejected after the move
Review the new IP’s reverse-DNS expectations, SPF authorization, DKIM key and selector, DMARC alignment, mailbox data and DNS records. Test delivery to more than one recipient domain and inspect both sending and receiving logs.
Questions to answer before pressing Reinstall
- Is the desired location actually listed in the current hPanel workflow?
- Do you have an independently downloaded backup of applications, databases, configuration, keys, cron jobs, firewall rules, certificates and mail?
- Has at least one database dump and a representative file restore been verified?
- Can the selected plan and operating system run the complete workload?
- Have you documented the old IP, DNS records, allowlists, integrations and license assignments?
- Do you have a maintenance window and a plan for DNS propagation?
- If the migration fails, can you restore service from the backup or switch back to a still-running source VPS?
Hostinger VPS location transfer: the practical verdict
There is no non-destructive location toggle for an existing Hostinger VPS. The supported in-place route is backup, reinstall in the destination shown by hPanel, rebuild, restore and update the new IP everywhere it is referenced. Because the reinstall deletes the original data, backups and snapshots, an independently verified backup is mandatory. For important production workloads, create a second VPS and migrate in parallel so you can test the rebuilt server and retain a rollback path until DNS, applications, databases and mail are confirmed healthy.
