Hostinger VPS RAM Usage: How to See Every Memory Detail

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check detailed RAM usage on a Hostinger VPS, use two views together: the hPanel graph for history and Linux tools over SSH for the live breakdown. In hPanel, open VPS → Manage → Backups & Monitoring → Server Usage. For the exact current figures, connect to the VPS and run free -m.

Do not judge a server by the dashboard’s “used” percentage alone. Linux deliberately fills spare memory with cache, and Hostinger’s dashboard combines used memory and buff/cache in its used-memory graph. The Available value, swap activity and the processes at the top of top or htop provide a more useful diagnosis.

Start with the right question: trend or live detail?

Hostinger exposes two different kinds of information. The Server Usage page shows how RAM behaved over time, which is useful for finding a recurring spike, a nightly job or a gradual increase. SSH commands show what is happening at the instant you run them and which processes are responsible. Neither view replaces the other.

  • Use hPanel first when you need to know whether the issue is occasional or persistent.
  • Use SSH next when you need the current totals, swap state or the process consuming memory.
  • Capture both during the same event if the VPS slows down only at a particular time.

A graph can show that memory rose at 02:00, but it cannot identify the process that caused the rise. A process list can identify a large consumer now, but it cannot prove that the same process caused last night’s spike unless you compare it with the historical pattern.

1. Check the historical graph in Hostinger hPanel

  1. Sign in to Hostinger hPanel.
  2. Open VPS and click Manage for the server you want to inspect.
  3. Open Backups & Monitoring.
  4. Select Server Usage.
  5. Review the RAM graph and choose the period that matches your question: 24 hours, one week, one month or one year.

Hostinger displays these graphs in GMT+0. Convert the graph’s timestamps to your local time before matching a memory rise with a scheduled backup, traffic burst or maintenance task.

The graph is best for answering questions such as “Does usage return to normal after the workload ends?” and “Is the peak repeated every day?” A single high point is less informative than the shape that follows it. A short rise followed by recovery is different from a line that climbs after every deployment and never returns to its earlier level.

New VPS data may not appear immediately

For a newly set-up VPS, Hostinger says Server Usage data can take about 30–60 minutes to populate. That delay does not indicate a memory fault. Use the SSH checks below while you wait for the dashboard history to become available.

2. Confirm how much RAM the VPS actually has

Before deciding that usage is excessive, verify the capacity baseline. In the VPS Dashboard’s Overview, open Plan details. That panel lists the resources allocated to the VPS, including vCPU, disk, RAM and bandwidth.

Then compare the RAM allocation shown there with the Total value returned by free -m. The values should describe the same server, but they can appear slightly different because the dashboard and Linux may calculate or present totals differently. Record the plan allocation and the command output together whenever you report a problem.

3. Get the detailed live breakdown over SSH

Connect to the VPS with your normal SSH client and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
free -m

The -m option displays values in megabytes, making the columns easy to compare with a VPS plan’s advertised RAM. If you prefer automatically selected human-readable units, free -h is an equivalent display choice; Hostinger specifically documents free -m for the detailed check.

A typical output contains rows labelled Mem and Swap, with columns such as total, used, free, shared, buff/cache and available. Read the labels rather than treating one percentage as a verdict.

What every free field means

Field Meaning on the VPS How to use it
Total The RAM limit configured for the VPS. Use it as the capacity baseline and compare it with hPanel’s Plan details.
Used Memory currently in use. Interpret it with Available and Buff/cache; do not treat it as the only measure of pressure.
Free Memory that is currently unused. A low number alone is not proof of a shortage because Linux can reclaim cache.
Shared Memory used by temporary files. Look at it as part of the complete breakdown, not as a standalone fault signal.
Buff/cache Kernel buffers and page-cache memory. Much of it can be released when applications need RAM.
Available An estimate of memory that can still be allocated to additional processes. This is generally more useful than Free for judging remaining capacity.

Hostinger notes that totals can vary with the calculation method. Its dashboard’s used-memory graph combines used memory and buff/cache, while the terminal output exposes those categories separately. A graph that looks nearly full can therefore coexist with a healthy Available value.

4. Find the process using RAM

Use top for a built-in live view

Run:

top

top provides a live process list with CPU and memory information. Watch the list for a few refreshes rather than reacting to one transient line. If the same service remains near the top while Available memory falls, it is a stronger lead than a process that appears briefly during normal activity.

Use htop for an interactive view

Run:

htop

Hostinger identifies htop as an alternative process viewer for CPU and RAM. In its interactive interface, sort by memory so the largest consumers appear first. This is useful when many web, database, worker or system processes are running and you need to scan them quickly.

Record the process name, its apparent RAM use and the time of the observation. Do not stop or kill a process merely because it is large: first establish what service owns it and whether the workload is expected. Restarting a production service can interrupt traffic or corrupt an in-progress operation.

5. Check swap and system pressure with vmstat

Run:

vmstat

For repeated samples, use an interval such as:

vmstat 1

Hostinger lists vmstat for examining memory, swap, CPU and I/O activity. Repeated samples let you distinguish a one-time allocation from continuing pressure. Look at the swap columns while the workload is active and compare them with Available memory and the process list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Swap activity is important context, but it should not be interpreted without timing. A brief swap event during a heavy job is a different situation from sustained swapping accompanied by falling Available memory and sluggish applications. Use the hPanel graph to see whether the event repeats and vmstat 1 to observe what is happening during the event.

Why high Buff/cache is usually not a problem

Linux uses otherwise idle RAM for kernel buffers and page cache so frequently accessed data can be served faster. That memory is not permanently reserved for the cache. Hostinger states that Linux automatically releases cache as pressure increases within the VPS.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For that reason, a high Buff/cache value by itself is not evidence of a leak. Do not clear caches simply to make a monitoring number look smaller. Judge the situation with three checks:

  • Available: Is there still a meaningful amount of memory that can be allocated to new processes?
  • Swap activity: Is the system continually moving memory to swap during the workload?
  • Process view: Is one process or service growing and remaining at the top of top or htop?

If Available remains adequate and swap is quiet, a large cache often represents normal Linux memory management rather than a fault.

How to reconcile a high hPanel percentage with free -m

Start by checking whether you are comparing the same moment. hPanel is a historical graph and may show a sampled value from earlier, while free -m is a point-in-time reading. Next, check the definitions: Hostinger’s dashboard used-memory view includes used memory plus buff/cache, whereas the terminal separates those fields.

Finally, account for calculation differences. Hostinger cautions that totals may vary depending on the method used. Small discrepancies do not necessarily indicate missing RAM. The useful comparison is the overall pattern: allocated Total, current Available, swap activity and the processes consuming memory.

A practical diagnosis workflow

  1. Confirm the plan capacity. Note the RAM shown in VPS Dashboard → Overview → Plan details.
  2. Locate the time of the problem. In VPS → Manage → Backups & Monitoring → Server Usage, inspect 24 hours first, then widen to a week, month or year if you need a longer pattern.
  3. Convert timestamps. The graph uses GMT+0, so align the peak with your local schedule.
  4. Capture a live baseline. Run free -m and save the output while the VPS is behaving normally.
  5. Capture the problem state. Run free -m again during the spike, then inspect top or htop.
  6. Check pressure. Run vmstat 1 for repeated samples and note swap and I/O activity.
  7. Compare observations. Look for a falling Available value, sustained swap activity or a process that dominates memory in both samples.
  8. Decide whether the event is expected. A scheduled job that finishes and releases memory calls for different action from a process that grows continuously.

How to interpret common patterns

Observed pattern What it suggests Next check
hPanel shows a short spike, then returns to the previous level A temporary workload or scheduled task is likely. Match the GMT+0 timestamp with jobs or traffic and capture free -m during the next occurrence.
Used graph is high, but Available remains healthy and Buff/cache is large Cache is contributing to the dashboard figure; this is not automatically memory exhaustion. Watch swap in vmstat 1 and identify the largest processes.
Available falls repeatedly and swap remains active The VPS is under sustained memory pressure. Use htop or top to identify the responsible service and compare the workload with the plan’s RAM allocation.
One process remains the largest consumer and grows during the event That service is the main investigation target. Identify the service owner and review its workload or configuration before restarting it.
Dashboard and terminal values differ modestly Different sampling times or calculation methods may explain the difference. Compare definitions, timestamps, Total and Available rather than one percentage.
There is no graph for a new VPS Server Usage data may still be populating. Wait for Hostinger’s stated 30–60-minute population period and use SSH meanwhile.

What not to conclude from one number

  • Low Free does not automatically mean failure. Linux can use spare RAM for cache, which can be reclaimed.
  • High Buff/cache does not automatically mean a leak. Hostinger describes cache release as a built-in response to rising pressure.
  • A high dashboard percentage does not identify the culprit. The dashboard combines used memory and buff/cache, so process-level inspection is still required.
  • A single top snapshot does not prove a trend. Compare samples during normal and problem periods and consult the historical graph.
  • A plan label is not a substitute for the live Total value. Confirm the allocation in Plan details and with free -m.

When you need to escalate or change the plan

Consider a capacity or configuration decision only after you have established a pattern. The evidence for sustained pressure is a combination of the historical graph, low Available memory, continuing swap activity and identifiable processes that remain large under the normal workload. If the pressure occurs only during a known periodic task, scheduling or workload changes may address it without changing the VPS allocation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the same workload repeatedly consumes nearly all available capacity and leaves little headroom, document the plan’s RAM allocation, the affected timestamps, free -m output, process observations from top or htop, and vmstat 1 samples. That record gives you a factual basis for deciding whether to optimize the service, reduce concurrent work or select a VPS plan with more RAM.

A repeatable monitoring record

When troubleshooting more than once, use the same sequence and save the time with each observation. Note whether the graph period is 24 hours, a week, a month or a year; remember that its timestamps are GMT+0. During the event, save free -m, identify the leading processes in top or htop, and observe vmstat 1 long enough to see whether swap activity continues.

This record separates three situations that otherwise look similar in a dashboard: normal cache use, a repeatable workload spike and sustained memory pressure. It also prevents a common diagnostic mistake—comparing a historical combined “used” figure with a current terminal field that excludes the cache from the same category.
