Check those in that order. Make sure the domain is on the Hostinger plan, point its DNS to Hostinger, allow up to 24 hours for propagation, verify that the CRT, private KEY and CABUNDLE match, then reinstall the certificate in hPanel.
This guide follows Hostinger’s current troubleshooting guidance and separates fixes for DNS, certificate files and plan compatibility, so you can identify the failing layer instead of repeatedly pasting the same values.

What the “SSL installation failed” message means
When hPanel rejects a custom certificate, it is checking more than whether three text boxes contain data. Hostinger has to associate the certificate with a site on your account, confirm that the hostname resolves to the expected hosting environment, and validate the relationship between the certificate, the private key and the issuing chain.

Hostinger describes three usual causes: DNS propagation problems, mismatched certificate files, and hosting-plan limitations. Treat the error as a diagnosis problem rather than a reason to buy another certificate. Replacing a valid certificate will not correct a DNS record that still sends visitors and validation requests to another server, and changing DNS will not repair a private key that belongs to a different certificate request.

First, confirm that your site can use a custom SSL certificate
Before changing records or files, verify that the domain and site type meet Hostinger’s compatibility rules. A correct certificate cannot be installed on an unsupported site or plan.
The site must be attached to the Hostinger hosting plan
The domain or subdomain you are securing must already be added to the Hostinger hosting plan where you are opening hPanel. If the site is hosted in another account or on another provider, hPanel cannot install the certificate for it. Check the domain list and confirm that the exact hostname in the certificate is the same site you selected for installation. A certificate for www.example.com, for example, should not be pasted into the installation screen for an unrelated subdomain.
File-based sites are the supported use case
Custom SSL installation applies to PHP and HTML sites, WordPress, and other file-based content-management systems hosted on a compatible Hostinger plan. The certificate is installed for the hosting environment that serves those files.
Hostinger AI Builder and Website Builder sites do not support custom SSL installation
If the site was created with Hostinger AI Builder or Website Builder, the custom-certificate workflow is not available. Repeating the import process, changing the CA bundle or waiting for DNS will not make that site type accept a manually supplied certificate. This is a product limitation, not a defective CRT file.
Wildcard and multi-domain certificates require VPS hosting
Hostinger’s current troubleshooting guidance states that wildcard and multi-domain certificates are supported only on VPS hosting plans. If your certificate covers multiple names or uses a wildcard such as *.example.com, check the plan before trying another installation. A single-name certificate and a wildcard certificate are not interchangeable for this compatibility check.

Point the hostname to Hostinger before installing
Certificate validation depends on the hostname reaching the server where the certificate is being installed. The domain can point to Hostinger through Hostinger nameservers or through an A record. Either architecture can work, but it must be internally consistent and must not leave another server answering for the same hostname.

Option 1: Use Hostinger nameservers
With Hostinger nameservers, DNS is managed through Hostinger’s DNS service. Confirm that the domain’s authoritative nameserver settings are the Hostinger values assigned to your account. If the registrar still delegates the domain to a different DNS provider, editing records in hPanel will not change the public DNS answer.
Option 2: Keep third-party DNS and set the A record
You can keep DNS at another provider and point the relevant hostname’s A record to the Hostinger server. Check the apex domain and any hostname you are actually securing. A record for example.com does not automatically correct a separate record for www.example.com or a subdomain.
Remove conflicting A and AAAA records
Look for more than one A record or for an AAAA record that sends IPv6 traffic to a different server. A visitor or validation request may reach the wrong host even though one record points correctly to Hostinger. Remove obsolete or conflicting records so the hostname resolves only through the intended Hostinger destination.
Do not delete unrelated records blindly. Mail, verification and other services may rely on their own names and record types. Change only the A or AAAA entries that conflict with the hostname you are securing, and record the old values before editing in case you need to restore them.
Temporarily disable a CDN proxy during validation
If Cloudflare or another CDN is proxying the hostname, switch the relevant DNS entry to DNS-only mode until the certificate is active. A proxy can answer validation requests from the CDN edge instead of allowing them to reach the Hostinger server. Once the certificate is installed and working, you can restore proxying and retest the site.

Allow DNS changes to propagate before retrying
Hostinger advises waiting up to 24 hours for DNS changes to propagate globally before retrying the installation. This is a maximum guidance window, not a promise that every change will take exactly 24 hours. Some networks update sooner, while others continue using cached answers for longer within their normal DNS behavior.

Start the waiting period after the last meaningful DNS change: nameserver delegation, an A-record correction, removal of a conflicting AAAA record or disabling a proxy. Repeatedly reinstalling during propagation does not accelerate the change and can make it harder to tell whether the eventual failure came from DNS or the certificate package.
A practical propagation checklist
- Write down the exact domain or subdomain shown in the certificate and in hPanel.
- Confirm that the authoritative DNS service is the one you intended to edit.
- Check that the hostname has no conflicting A or AAAA record.
- If a CDN is in front of the site, set the record to DNS-only for validation.
- Wait up to 24 hours from the final DNS change before attempting the import again.
If the certificate still fails after the propagation window, move to file validation rather than making more random DNS edits.
Validate the CRT, private KEY and CABUNDLE as one package
Hostinger’s import form expects three related values supplied by the certificate issuer: the CRT certificate, the private KEY, and the CABUNDLE (also called the CA bundle or certificate chain). They must come from the same issuance and represent the same certificate request.
Confirm that all three files came from the same issuance
Do not combine a certificate downloaded for one order with a CA bundle from an older order or a private key generated for another domain. Even if each file opens as text and appears complete, the set can be rejected when the cryptographic relationships do not match.
Keep the issuer’s original package together. If the issuer supplied several downloads, identify which certificate file is the leaf certificate for your hostname and which file is the corresponding chain. A CABUNDLE from a different product or issuance is not a safe substitute merely because the issuer’s name looks familiar.
The private key must match the CSR and certificate
Hostinger specifically notes that installation can fail when the private key does not match the Certificate Signing Request (CSR) or the certificate itself. The CSR is tied to the key pair created when the order was submitted. If the CSR was generated on one server but the private key was generated again elsewhere, the resulting files will not form a valid set.

Check your certificate issuer’s matching or reissue guidance if you are unsure which key produced the CSR. Do not paste a newly generated key into hPanel just to test it; a new key requires a certificate reissue based on a CSR created from that key.

Check that the certificate is current and not revoked
An expired or revoked certificate is not a usable installation target. Review the validity dates and status supplied by the issuer. If the certificate is expired, revoked or otherwise no longer valid, request a new issuance rather than trying to force the old files through hPanel.
What to do when the private key is missing
Hostinger cannot recreate a private key that you no longer possess. If the original key was deleted, replaced or generated on a machine you can no longer access, contact the certificate issuer and request a reissue using a new CSR and a newly retained private key. Keep the new key secure and do not send it through public channels.
Certificate-package checks
- CRT: Issued for the exact domain or domains you are installing.
- Private KEY: The key that generated the CSR used for this issuance.
- CABUNDLE: The issuer-provided chain for that certificate, not a file from another order.
- Validity: The certificate is within its validity period.
- Status: The certificate has not been revoked.
- Integrity: Values were copied completely, without truncating the issuer’s supplied content.
Reinstall the certificate in hPanel
After compatibility, DNS and file checks are complete, perform a clean installation instead of layering another attempt over a failed one.
- Open hPanel and select the relevant domain or subdomain.
- Uninstall the existing SSL for that hostname. This removes the current installation state so you can start with the corrected package.
- Choose Import SSL for the domain or subdomain.
- Paste the issuer-provided CRT certificate into the certificate field.
- Paste the matching private KEY into the private-key field.
- Paste the corresponding CABUNDLE into the CA-bundle field.
- Click Install SSL.
Use the exact hostname selected in hPanel and the exact values from the same issuance. Avoid editing certificate text, mixing line blocks from separate downloads or substituting a key generated after the certificate was issued.

Hostinger’s guidance is to reinstall once and then contact the certificate issuer or Hostinger support if the certificate remains invalid. At that point, preserve the error message, the hostname, the plan type, the DNS architecture and the issuer’s package details. That information lets support determine whether the remaining issue is account-side, DNS-side or cryptographic without asking you to repeat every earlier step.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

Common mistakes that make troubleshooting slower
Retrying before DNS is settled
Changing a record and immediately reinstalling can produce the same failure while public resolvers still hold the previous destination. Record the time of the final change and use the 24-hour guidance window as your retry boundary.
Editing the wrong DNS provider
When nameservers point to a third-party provider, changes made only in Hostinger DNS may have no public effect. Confirm delegation before deciding that an A record “did not work.”
Leaving an old IPv6 destination in place
An apparently correct A record does not cancel an AAAA record. If IPv6 still resolves to a different server, some requests can bypass Hostinger. Check both record families for the hostname.
Assuming every text file is interchangeable
CRT, KEY and CABUNDLE are different parts of the installation. A CA bundle is not a private key, and a private key from another CSR cannot be made compatible by changing its filename. Use the files supplied for the same issuance.
Generating a replacement key without reissuing
A replacement key changes the key pair. The issuer must issue a certificate for a CSR created from that new key; otherwise the new key and old certificate will remain mismatched.
Trying to solve a plan restriction with file changes
No certificate formatting adjustment can enable custom SSL on Hostinger AI Builder or Website Builder, or make a wildcard/multi-domain certificate supported on a plan where Hostinger limits those certificate types to VPS.
When to contact Hostinger versus the certificate issuer
Contact Hostinger support when
- The domain is on a compatible file-based site and the DNS records point to Hostinger, but hPanel still rejects a verified certificate package.
- You have waited up to 24 hours after the final DNS change and removed conflicting A, AAAA or proxy routing.
- You need confirmation that the selected plan supports the certificate type and hostname.
- The installation fails after one clean uninstall-and-import attempt.
Contact the certificate issuer when
- The private key is lost or was replaced.
- The issuer’s package does not clearly identify the matching CRT, key relationship or CABUNDLE.
- The certificate is expired, revoked or otherwise invalid.
- You need a reissue based on a new CSR.
Provide each party with the facts relevant to its layer. Hostinger needs the domain, plan and hPanel failure; the issuer needs the certificate order, validity status and CSR/key situation. Never send a private key in an unsecured support message unless the issuer explicitly provides a secure procedure.

How to prevent the next installation failure
- Keep the private key with the certificate order and the CSR record that produced it.
- Store the issuer’s CRT and CABUNDLE together instead of renaming or mixing files from different orders.
- Document whether DNS is managed by Hostinger, a registrar, a third-party DNS service or a CDN.
- When moving a site, check both A and AAAA records and note any proxy that must be switched to DNS-only during validation.
- Record the certificate’s validity and renewal status so an expired or revoked certificate is replaced before an emergency installation.
- Confirm plan compatibility before purchasing or requesting a wildcard or multi-domain certificate.
