What “import” means for a metrics dashboard
Importing a dashboard definition is not the same as importing the business data it displays. A dashboard usually contains visualizations and queries that refer to data sources. Those references may need to be mapped to sources available in the destination service; a successful dashboard import does not by itself move telemetry, recreate credentials, or prove that every query will work.

Before choosing a provider, establish whether your project is importing dashboard JSON, migrating an existing Grafana environment, connecting custom events and attributes, or moving the underlying data. These are distinct tasks and can have different prerequisites.

If dashboard import and source remapping are central
Grafana Cloud has the most explicit import and migration evidence in the cited material. Its import workflow accepts JSON or a URL/ID and may require you to map query references to destination data sources. Its Migration Assistant covers named resource types, but that is not proof that every plugin, custom configuration, or service-side state will transfer. Use the supported-resource list and validate the result after migration.

If custom events and a selectable hosting region matter
New Relic documents dashboards for custom attributes and events, dashboard JSON import, and US, EU, or Japan organization hosting. That makes it a candidate to investigate when both custom data and regional choice matter. The documentation does not establish a dashboard rollback retention commitment, and a region selection alone does not answer every question about backups, support access, subprocessors, or data transfers.
If dashboard rollback history is the deciding feature
Datadog supplies the clearest cited retention figures: 30 days when Audit Trail is disabled and 90 days when it is enabled. Confirm the account’s Audit Trail configuration and expected recovery window. A restore changes the dashboard for users and becomes a new history event, rather than erasing the intervening history.

If the workload is reporting rather than observability
Looker Studio’s history model may be useful for reports, but identify the source type before relying on rollback. A report restore does not roll back a reusable data source; an embedded source follows the parent report’s history. Credential changes need direct correction.

Use a safe import and rollback workflow
- Inventory the current setup. Record dashboard IDs and definitions, queries, data-source names, variables, credentials, permissions, and alert dependencies. Preserve the current source configuration as well as the dashboard.
- Make a recoverable copy. Export the current dashboard definition or duplicate it where supported. Keep the copy outside the change you are testing, and document how to return to the previous source configuration.
- Trial outside production. Import into a non-production workspace or a duplicated dashboard first. Check whether queries resolve against destination sources and whether variables, permissions, and dependent alerts behave as intended.
- Preview before restoring. For Datadog, inspect the version before choosing restore, and account for the fact that restoration changes the current dashboard for all users. For other providers, confirm the actual restore mechanism rather than assuming import or migration history is equivalent to rollback history.
- Validate after the change. Check query results, time ranges, permissions, and alerts, then retain the pre-change definition until the new dashboard is accepted. Do not assume rollback restores credentials, source-side changes, telemetry, or unrelated account settings.
Check EU/US data location at the contract and feature level
New Relic’s documentation lists US (default), EU, and Japan hosting choices and says customers are responsible for selecting a suitable region for processing and storage. It also notes that feature availability may vary by region. This documents a regional choice; it does not establish that every product feature, support workflow, backup, or subprocessor remains within that geography.

Google Cloud’s release notes describe an EU multi-region endpoint for a particular Conversational Analytics feature. The described scope covers EU member states and excludes London and Zurich regions; it should not be generalized to all Looker or Google Cloud processing. Google Cloud Looker release notes.
For every shortlisted vendor, ask for the data-processing agreement and current subprocessor list. Identify the location and handling of telemetry, dashboard metadata, account and support logs, backups, and support access. Confirm transfer mechanisms, retention and deletion terms, and whether the selected plan and required feature endpoints honor the geography you need. The cited documentation does not settle those contract questions or establish current plan prices.

Questions to settle before migrating production
- What exactly will the import move: dashboard definitions, queries, data, data sources, plugins, or some combination?
- Which query references, credentials, variables, permissions, and alert dependencies require manual remapping?
- Can the team preview and restore the relevant object, and what history window applies to the account’s configuration?
- Does restoration cover only the dashboard/report, or also its data sources, credentials, and other dependencies?
- Which regions apply to storage and processing for the specific plan and features, and what exceptions apply to support, backups, logs, and subprocessors?
- Are the import, region, and rollback features available together in the intended region and plan?
