Horizontal keystone correction digitally reshapes a projector image when its left and right edges appear slanted or unequal. Before using it, try to align the projector squarely with the screen and use lens shift if available: digital correction can reduce the number of pixels used to form the image, while lens shift preserves resolution.
Why does a projector image look like a trapezoid?
A projector aimed at a screen from an angle can make a rectangular image appear skewed. Horizontal keystone describes distortion across the image’s left-to-right geometry; a projector manual may characterize it as unequal left and right borders. Vertical keystone addresses the corresponding top-to-bottom skew. The controls correct different axes, and the specific options depend on the projector.

Horizontal keystone correction digitally reshapes the image to compensate for that off-axis geometry. It is a way to improve the displayed shape when placement cannot fully solve the problem, not a substitute for checking the setup first.

How to fix horizontal keystone on a projector
- Check the screen and image. Make sure the screen or projection surface is level. Display a grid, menu, or other image with straight edges so you can judge the geometry.
- Improve the projector’s position. As practical, aim it perpendicular to the screen rather than from the side. Use lens shift if the projector has it to reposition the image optically. Epson advises trying placement and lens shift before keystone correction (Epson’s image-shape adjustment instructions).
- Focus and frame the image. Once the projector is aligned, focus the picture and set its size. If the side edges still appear skewed, open the projector’s installation or geometry controls and look for horizontal keystone. Menu names and adjustment methods vary by model; consult that model’s manual or support documentation. LG’s troubleshooting guidance also notes that steps can vary by model (LG USA Support).
- Adjust within the documented range. Make small changes until the edges look right, then check image size and sharpness. Review the manual for any restrictions on combining keystone with other geometry controls.
Lens shift vs. horizontal keystone

The controls solve related but different problems: lens shift moves the image without digitally reshaping it, while keystone changes the image geometry. Epson’s guide explains the distinction between lens shift and horizontal or vertical keystone (Epson Projector Guide: Image Position Adjustment).

Horizontal keystone, vertical keystone, and corner adjustment
- Horizontal keystone corrects skew across the left-to-right direction.
- Vertical keystone corrects top-to-bottom skew. Its controls and range are model-specific.
- Four-corner adjustment, sometimes called corner fit, lets some projectors move image corners individually. Not every projector offers it, and some models restrict which geometry controls can be used together. A ProjectorCentral-hosted projector manual describes horizontal keystone and four-corner adjustment for its particular model.
How much horizontal keystone correction can a projector make?
There is no universal correction-angle limit. Epson’s instructions for the specific projector covered on its support page state a limit of up to 30° left, right, up, or down; that figure is not a category-wide standard (Epson’s image-shape adjustment instructions). Fujifilm likewise documents ranges that depend on the projector model and lens-shift position (Fujifilm Geometric Correction Range). Check the documentation for the exact model and configuration rather than assuming a range based on a feature name or another brand’s specification.

- Does the model offer horizontal keystone, and what correction range does its manual specify?
- Does it provide lens shift, and in which directions?
- Is correction manual or automatic?
- What image-quality effects does the manufacturer document?
- Can the correction method you need be combined with corner adjustment or other geometry controls?
Feature names alone do not establish a projector’s range or implementation. Confirm the answers in official documentation for the particular model.
