Honor of Kings is a 5v5 mobile MOBA: your team wins by working through the lanes, taking down the enemy’s towers, and destroying the enemy crystal. For a first match, learn what your hero does, farm safely in the role you have been assigned, check the minimap often, and help your team create openings rather than chasing every fight.
What you do in a match
MOBA stands for multiplayer online battle arena. In Honor of Kings, two teams of five fight across a map with three main lanes—Clash, Mid, and Farm—plus a jungle area and a river. Each player controls one hero. Your team gains ground by defeating opposing heroes and minions, taking useful map resources, and destroying the structures that guard the route to the enemy base.

Heroes have different skills and strengths, so the same fight or lane can call for different decisions depending on who you are playing. You do not need to master every system at once: start by understanding your role and the route your team is trying to open.

The official Honor of Kings overview uses five play-style labels: Warrior, Assassin, Mage, Marksman, and Support. A beginner guide from Epic Games Store also discusses Tanks. These labels describe broad tendencies, not fixed rules: a hero’s class, lane assignment, and job in a particular team are related but not always identical.

| Class or label | Broad role | Beginner’s takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior or fighter | Fights directly and can often withstand more pressure than a fragile damage dealer. | May suit a frontline or Clash Lane assignment, depending on the hero and team. |
| Assassin | Uses mobility and burst damage to threaten vulnerable opponents. | Look for opportunities rather than starting every fight head-on. |
| Mage | Often deals ranged area damage or control with abilities. | Mid Lane is a common fit; clearing a wave can create time to help elsewhere. |
| Marksman | Deals ranged damage and often becomes more influential as the match progresses. | Farm Lane’s extra minion gold supports this role’s need to build strength. |
| Support | Helps teammates through protection, buffs, or other utility. | Supports commonly move around the map as Roamers instead of staying in one lane. |
| Tank | Absorbs damage and can help protect or lead the team. | Tanks may fit a frontline or roaming job; the exact assignment depends on the team. |
These are broad role descriptions in Dave Tach’s September 4, 2025 beginner guide, not judgments about current hero balance. Read your chosen hero’s skill information in the game so you know what each ability does before relying on a class label alone.
How lanes and roaming fit together
The official site names five assignments—Clash Lane, Jungler, Mid Lane, Farm Lane, and Roamer. Three are the main lane roads. Jungler describes a role that works in the jungle area, not a fourth lane; Roamer describes a player who moves around the map to help teammates.

| Assignment | Typical fit | Farming emphasis | Map movement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid Lane | Mages that can clear waves and use abilities at range are a common fit. | Farm lane minions, then use a safe opening to move or assist. | Often has opportunities to rotate to other parts of the map after clearing. |
| Clash Lane | Fighters and tanks are common choices. | Manage the lane and collect minion rewards while contesting space. | Usually focuses on its lane, but should respond to team needs when it is safe. |
| Farm Lane | Marksmen are a common fit. | Minions here provide more gold, helping marksmen build toward their role. | Typically prioritizes lane farming before joining wider fights when appropriate. |
| Jungler | A role in the jungle area rather than a lane road. | Defeating jungle monsters can provide resources; exact rewards can vary. | Moves through the jungle and may help lanes or contest map resources. |
| Roamer | Often a support or tank. | Does not simply stay in one lane collecting its waves. | Moves across the map to support allies and respond to opportunities. |
These lane fits come from Epic’s dated guide and are useful defaults, not mandatory picks for every hero or patch. Follow your match assignment and team’s plan rather than assuming one class must always occupy one lane.

Objectives: from minions to the enemy crystal
The win condition is the enemy crystal. The official site describes taking it as the ultimate goal; towers protect the lanes, and destroying them opens a route closer to the base. That makes lane pressure more than a way to earn resources: it helps your team reach the structure that ends the match.

- In this cooperative strategy game players will roll dice and draw cards to try and avoid the ring wraiths and save Middle Earth
- Plays up to four players or can be a solo adventure

- Immerses you in the world of Tolkein
- Clear and manage lane minions. Minions help create pressure in a lane and provide farming opportunities. Keep collecting lane resources without taking unnecessary risks.
- Take towers when your team can. Towers protect the route. Bringing one down gives your side a way to push farther toward the base.
- Use river and jungle resources. Monsters are map resources, not decoration. Epic’s guide says defeating river and jungle monsters can grant buffs, while the official overview describes jungle monsters as useful resources. Their exact effects and spawn timings can vary, so do not rely on a memorized timer without checking current in-game information.
- Convert an opening into pressure on the base. Once your team has access through a lane, coordinate with teammates and advance toward the crystal rather than treating hero eliminations as the match’s main objective.
The river runs through the middle of the map, and its bushes can conceal enemies. Before crossing or moving into a bush, check the minimap and consider whether opponents are missing. A small pause can help you avoid walking into a fight without support.

- Choose one hero and learn its kit. The in-game hero information explains skills. Start by understanding what each ability does and when it is useful; add more heroes after you are comfortable with the basics.
- Try a straightforward Mid or Farm option if you are unsure. Epic’s beginner guide suggests these as places to start, not as a rule. The better choice is a hero and assignment you can understand and play safely.
- Look at the minimap frequently. It helps you notice where allies and visible enemies are, spot developing pressure, and avoid drifting too far from help.
- Buy available equipment upgrades. Use the in-game shop and available recommendations as a starting point while you learn; equipment details and recommendations may change.
- Back away when you are weak or outnumbered. A retreat can preserve time and give you a chance to recover. Not every opponent sighting needs to become a fight.
- Communicate and play for the team. Use available team communication to signal danger or coordinate movement. Focus first on lane farming, map awareness, and objectives before adding more advanced strategies.
Epic’s September 2025 guide stated that the game had more than 100 heroes and described a typical 5v5 match as lasting around 15–20 minutes. Those are figures from that dated guide, not a live roster count or a guaranteed match length. For a practical first match, it is more useful to focus on your assigned role than to memorize a roster total or plan around a fixed duration.

What not to memorize from an old guide
Exact monster spawn timers, reward values, and hero strength can change with game updates. The official overview and Epic’s 2025 beginner guide establish the broad map and role fundamentals, but they do not establish current patch-specific objective timings or a current beginner hero tier list. Use the live game’s information for current details and treat general lane and class descriptions as starting points.
