The HONOR option could be more attractive if you specifically want an OLED screen and a very high refresh-rate ceiling, but the name in this comparison is ambiguous: the current official 8.4-inch match is the China-market HONOR WIN Tablet (model HES-W00), listed with an October 2026 launch. Confirm that this is the device and market you mean before treating the comparison as definitive.
First, identify which HONOR tablet you are comparing
“HONOR 8.4-inch tablet” is not a precise retail model name. The official 8.4-inch product that matches the description is the HONOR WIN Tablet, model HES-W00, shown in HONOR’s China store and listed as launching in October 2026. That listing should not be read as proof that the tablet is sold globally, supported in your country, or available through your preferred retailer.

HONOR also has a Pad 8, but its official global information describes a 12-inch tablet. It is therefore not the natural match for a compact-tablet comparison. If a retailer or search result gives you a different HONOR model number, check that number, screen size, operating system, warranty region, and cellular bands before using the specifications below.
The iPad side is less ambiguous: Apple identifies the product as the iPad mini (A17 Pro), introduced in 2024. The practical comparison is consequently conditional: the figures below compare the HES-W00 listing with Apple’s current iPad mini (A17 Pro) specifications, not every HONOR tablet that happens to have a similar diagonal.

These are manufacturer specifications, not a controlled test. RAM capacity, chip names, display technology and battery ratings do not by themselves prove which tablet opens apps faster, lasts longer in your routine or produces the better-looking image.
Display: OLED and 240Hz versus a calibrated iPadOS panel
HONOR’s panel advantage is specification-based
The HONOR listing gives the WIN Tablet an 8.4-inch OLED panel with 2304×1440 resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio. OLED pixels emit their own light, so the design can deliver very deep blacks and strong contrast when content and software take advantage of it. The listed refresh ceiling is up to 240Hz, with six selectable settings. HONOR also warns that the maximum refresh rate can differ by application, so a 240Hz figure is a ceiling rather than a promise that every game, video or interface runs at 240 frames per second.
The 16:10 shape is slightly more elongated than the iPad mini’s screen. That can suit widescreen video and many Android games, while the exact letterboxing and usable area depend on the app. Screen diagonal alone cannot tell you how the tablet will feel in portrait orientation.

What Apple documents for the iPad mini
Apple lists an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display using a LED-backlit IPS panel. Its resolution is 2266×1488 at 326 pixels per inch, with a stated brightness of 500 nits, P3 wide color and True Tone. Apple notes that the display has rounded corners and measures 8.3 inches when the rounded panel is treated as a rectangle for diagonal measurement.
Apple’s cited technical page does not list a refresh-rate number for this iPad mini. You therefore should not label it 60Hz or claim that it matches or beats the HONOR’s 240Hz from the supplied specifications. The defensible distinction is that HONOR advertises a selectable high-refresh ceiling, while Apple documents color, pixel density, brightness and True Tone without publishing a comparable refresh figure on that page.
Which screen should you choose?
- Choose the HONOR screen on paper if OLED contrast, the 16:10 format or a high refresh-rate setting is your main priority and you can verify that your apps use it.
- Choose the iPad mini if predictable color features, True Tone, Apple’s app ecosystem and a well-documented compact display matter more than a headline refresh-rate number.
- For outdoor use, compare actual regional models and independent measurements before deciding. The stated 500-nit figure belongs to Apple’s specification; no equivalent HONOR brightness figure is established in the cited listing.
Size and weight: the iPad mini is lighter, while the HONOR is shorter and narrower
The HONOR WIN Tablet is listed at approximately 189.34 × 121.48 × 6.1mm and about 315g including its battery. The Wi-Fi iPad mini measures 195.4 × 134.8 × 6.3mm and weighs 293g; the cellular version is listed at 297g. HONOR’s dimensions are approximate and may vary with configuration, production process and measurement method.

That creates an easily missed trade-off. The HONOR has the nominally larger 8.4-inch diagonal, but its published body is both shorter and narrower than the iPad mini. It is also slightly thicker by the listed dimensions and roughly 18–22g heavier, depending on which iPad mini connectivity version you compare. A larger diagonal does not automatically mean a larger or more comfortable grip.

The iPad mini’s lower weight may matter more than a one-tenth-inch diagonal difference during long sessions. Conversely, the HONOR’s shorter height and narrower width could suit a smaller hand even though its mass is higher.
Software and performance: avoid declaring a winner from chip names
HONOR’s listed platform
The HES-W00 listing identifies MagicOS 11 based on Android 17 and names the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. That combination points to a modern Android tablet platform, but the listing alone does not establish sustained performance, thermal behavior, game frame rates, update duration or application compatibility in your country.
China-market firmware can also differ from an international Android release in services, app stores, language support, notifications, payment functions and bootloader policy. Before importing one, confirm which services are installed, whether your essential applications are available through the supported store, and how warranty and software updates work across borders.
Apple’s listed platform
The iPad mini uses Apple’s A17 Pro chip and iPadOS. That gives it access to the iPad version of Apple’s software ecosystem, including tablet-optimized applications and continuity features for people already using Apple hardware. The cited specifications do not, however, provide an independent benchmark against the Snapdragon part.

If your decision depends on a particular game, creative application, virtual-instrument setup or professional workflow, check that application’s current tablet support rather than assuming the nominally newer or larger number wins.

Storage and memory: capacity is clear, usable space is not
The cited HONOR configuration lists 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. HONOR notes that usable capacity is lower than the nominal figure because system software occupies space. The iPad mini is offered with 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of storage; Apple’s listed capacity is likewise a nominal figure rather than a promise that every gigabyte is available for your files.
Do not treat 16GB versus Apple’s unspecified RAM figure as a direct performance score. iPadOS and Android manage memory differently, and the number of simultaneously retained applications depends on software behavior. Select storage by your media, game and offline-work requirements, then check whether the exact HONOR configuration is sold in your region. A China-store specification does not guarantee that a similarly named international model has the same memory or storage.
Pen input and productivity
Apple explicitly supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) on the cited iPad mini, and lists hover support. That gives note-takers, illustrators and annotators a documented accessory path, although the pencil, case and other accessories add to the total purchase cost.

The cited HONOR listing does not establish a specific compatible stylus. Do not assume that a generic active pen, a stylus from another HONOR tablet or an accessory sold in a different country will provide pressure sensitivity, palm rejection or a reliable pairing experience. If handwriting or drawing is central to your purchase, obtain the exact HES-W00 accessory specification and local stock information before choosing it.
For keyboard work, compare the complete setup rather than the tablet alone: keyboard layout, case fit, trackpad behavior, language support, charging method and the applications you use. Neither manufacturer specification set here proves that one compact tablet is a better laptop substitute.
Battery claims are not directly comparable
HONOR gives a battery capacity: 10,000mAh typical and 9,660mAh rated for the listed WIN Tablet. Apple gives a 19.3Wh battery and estimates up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback, or up to 9 hours of cellular web use for cellular models. Apple says actual results vary.

Milliamp-hours and watt-hours measure different aspects of a battery, and neither manufacturer’s figure is a side-by-side endurance test under the same brightness, refresh setting, network, application load and temperature. A larger mAh number therefore cannot establish longer runtime than the iPad mini. The HONOR’s 240Hz setting, OLED behavior, modem configuration and software may all change consumption in practice.
When battery life is decisive, compare independent tests of the exact regional models or use a return policy that lets you evaluate your normal workload. Ask specifically about video streaming, gaming, reading at fixed brightness, standby drain and cellular use rather than relying on a single capacity number.
Cameras: useful hardware information, limited comparative evidence
HONOR lists a 13MP rear camera with autofocus and an f/2.0 aperture, plus an 8MP front fixed-focus camera at f/2.0. Those figures describe the sensors and lenses, not the final image quality, stabilization, HDR behavior, microphone performance or video results.
Apple publishes the iPad mini’s camera specifications separately, but the cited material does not provide a complete like-for-like camera table for this comparison. There is no reliable basis here for declaring either tablet the better camera device. If scanning documents, video calls or augmented-reality applications matter, verify the exact camera modes and test the front-camera framing with the case you intend to use.

The HONOR evidence is a China official-store listing. It does not establish global availability, a local retail price, an international warranty, cellular-band compatibility, charger configuration or whether Google services and your preferred language are included in your market. Importing a tablet can also add tax, shipping, return friction and repair delays.

The iPad mini has a clearly identified Apple model and regional configurations, but your local price still depends on storage, Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity, tax and retailer promotions. No current market price is established by the specifications used here, so a value verdict would be misleading.

Build a full-cost comparison using these line items:
- Tablet price for the exact storage and connectivity version.
- Compatible stylus and its replacement nibs, if required.
- Protective case, screen protection and keyboard accessories.
- Charger and cable requirements.
- Shipping, import duties and local taxes for the HONOR model.
- Warranty coverage, repair location and return period.
- Cellular activation and plan costs if you need mobile data.
Which compact tablet fits each type of buyer?
Choose the iPad mini when ecosystem and pen support come first
The iPad mini is the stronger default for someone already using Apple devices, relying on iPadOS applications or wanting a documented Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (USB-C) path. Its published 293g Wi-Fi weight also favors readers who carry the tablet or hold it for long periods. The choice remains subject to local pricing and storage needs, but the product identity and support path are straightforward.
Consider the HONOR when the screen specification is your priority
The HONOR WIN Tablet deserves consideration if an OLED panel, 16:10 layout and a selectable refresh ceiling of up to 240Hz are more important to you than the iPadOS ecosystem. Treat that as a specification-led preference, not proof of superior smoothness or image quality in every application. Confirm the HES-W00 model, software services, accessories and warranty in your country first.

Do not buy either tablet solely from its processor name. Check whether your games support the device’s native resolution, whether they expose high-refresh modes, how the tablet behaves after sustained play and whether your preferred controller works. HONOR’s six refresh settings and app-dependent maximum make this verification particularly important.
For reading and travel, compare hand feel and battery evidence
The iPad mini is lighter, while the HONOR body is shorter and narrower despite its larger diagonal. Readers who prefer OLED contrast may favor HONOR, but people who value a lower carry weight may prefer the iPad mini. Neither published battery claim proves a runtime winner, so use comparable testing or a return window for a travel-heavy purchase.
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm the HONOR model number. Make sure the listing says HES-W00 and 8.4 inches, not a different HONOR tablet.

- Decide whether pen input is essential. Apple’s compatible pencils are documented; the cited HONOR listing does not identify a specific stylus.
- Choose storage from your workload. Compare 128GB, 256GB and 512GB iPad mini options with the HONOR listing’s 512GB, remembering that system software reduces usable space.
- Compare complete ownership cost. Include accessories, import charges, taxes, warranty and repairs rather than comparing tablet prices alone.

Verdict
The iPad mini (A17 Pro) is the better general recommendation when you want a light compact tablet with a clearly documented model, iPadOS, Apple’s app ecosystem and Apple Pencil support. Its 293g Wi-Fi body is also easier to carry than the HONOR listing’s approximately 315g device.
The HONOR WIN Tablet may be the better fit for a specific display preference: its listed 8.4-inch OLED panel, 16:10 format and up-to-240Hz ceiling are compelling on paper. That advantage is conditional, because refresh behavior varies by app and no independent test here proves better image quality, speed or endurance.
Do not make the final purchase until you confirm that the China-market HES-W00 is actually the HONOR model available to you. Once model, region, price, warranty and accessory support are verified, choose the iPad mini for ecosystem and pen certainty, or the HONOR for its display specification and Android-based workflow.
