If an accessory shows “No Response” in Apple’s Home app, first check whether the problem affects accessories from one manufacturer or several. Apple gives those cases different troubleshooting sequences. Test the accessory in Home after each step, and save removing or resetting it for later in the process.
First, identify what is affected
Check whether the “No Response” status is limited to one maker’s accessories or appears across accessories from multiple manufacturers. That distinction determines which steps to try first. Also note whether the accessory works in its manufacturer’s app: if it fails there too, the problem may not be limited to Apple Home.

Apple’s current guidance covers HomeKit and Matter accessories in the Home app. It provides troubleshooting steps rather than identifying one cause for every “No Response” message. Follow the relevant branch below, checking Home after each action. Apple Support: If your HomeKit or Matter accessory isn’t responding in the Home app.

- Turn on Bluetooth. On iPhone or iPad, enable Bluetooth; on Mac, check Bluetooth in System Settings. Then test the accessory in Home.
- Restart the affected accessories. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for restarting them. For a battery-powered accessory, removing and reinserting its batteries may help. Test again.
- Check the manufacturer’s app for firmware updates. Install an available update according to the maker’s instructions, then check whether the accessory responds in both apps. If it also fails in the manufacturer’s app, the maker may recommend resetting it; do not reset it yet unless the later removal-and-repair step is needed.
- Restart bridges and home hubs. Unplug each third-party bridge and each Apple home hub you use—HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV—and reconnect it to power. Check Home after they restart.
- If the affected accessory is a third-party Thread accessory, give the network time to settle. Disconnect that accessory from power for 5 minutes, reconnect it, and wait 10 minutes for the Thread network to stabilize. Then test it in Home.
- Remove and add the accessory again only if the earlier checks fail. Remove it from Home. If Home does not offer a removal option, use the manufacturer’s app. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to reset the accessory and add it again.
- Contact the manufacturer if its accessories still do not respond.
If accessories from several manufacturers are affected
- Update the controlling device and reopen Home. Install the latest software available for your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, then close and reopen the Home app. Test an accessory.
- Check the Wi-Fi connection. For local troubleshooting, connect the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you are using to the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories. If you are trying to control accessories remotely, Apple says a home hub must be set up.
- Check Bluetooth, accessory power, and firmware. Turn on Bluetooth on the controlling device, restart affected accessories, and check the manufacturers’ apps for firmware updates. Test in Home after each action.
- Apply the Thread timing only to affected third-party Thread accessories. Disconnect each from power for 5 minutes, reconnect it, and wait 10 minutes for the Thread network to stabilize before testing.
- Restart the network and home equipment. Restart the modem and router, third-party bridges, all home hubs, affected accessories, and the controlling iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Follow each device maker’s instructions for a safe restart, and check Home again afterward.
- Check VPN or third-party security software. These can affect network connectivity. If you use either, review its settings or support guidance to determine whether it is interfering with connections between the controlling device and accessories. Avoid changing security settings permanently without understanding the effect.
- Contact Apple Support if accessories from multiple manufacturers remain unresponsive after these checks.
What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
- One maker affected: Begin with Bluetooth, those accessories’ power and firmware, and their bridge or hub. Apple’s guidance puts removing and resetting them after the less disruptive checks.
- Several makers affected: Check the controlling device’s software and Wi-Fi, then restart the broader network and home setup. This pattern does not by itself prove the router or a hub is faulty.
- Fails in the maker’s app too: Check the maker’s firmware and troubleshooting instructions; contact that manufacturer if its accessory still fails.
- Third-party Thread accessory: Use Apple’s specific power-disconnect and stabilization timing; do not apply it as a generic fix for every accessory type.
- Local versus remote control: Same-network Wi-Fi is a useful local check. Remote control has a separate requirement: a configured home hub.
When to stop troubleshooting and get help
For a single manufacturer’s accessories, contact that manufacturer if its troubleshooting steps—including any reset and re-pairing it directs you to perform—do not resolve the problem. For an issue spanning multiple manufacturers, contact Apple Support after the broader restart and network checks. Keep track of which accessories fail, whether they also fail in their makers’ apps, and which steps you tried; that helps support narrow down the affected part of the setup.
