How to Check for Road Closures and Plan a Route on the Isle of Skye

Before driving on Skye, check Traffic Scotland for trunk-road incidents and planned works, then check Road Works Scotland separately for local-road works. Review available traffic cameras for context and recheck the notices shortly before setting off: work schedules and traffic arrangements can change.

1. Set your travel date and route

Start with your origin, destination, travel date and approximate time. The roads affected depend on where you are going and when, so a single route or closure list cannot cover every Skye journey. Include the approach to the island as well as the roads you expect to use on Skye.

2. Check trunk roads with Traffic Scotland

Enter your intended journey in the Traffic Scotland route planner and inspect the map along the route. Its service covers Scotland’s trunk-road information, including incidents, congestion, roadworks, cameras, weather warnings, bridge information and future planned works. Use the planner for the journey and the map layers to see relevant disruptions; the service says it displays current or future information for the best route automatically.

3. Look at planned works and their traffic arrangements

For travel on a future date, check the Traffic Scotland planned roadworks listing. Read the notice for the specific location and dates, then check what traffic management it describes. A closure, convoy control, a period when traffic may pass, and a diversion are not interchangeable arrangements. Follow the current notice and signs on site rather than assuming you can pass freely or that an ordinary diversion is available.

Do not rely on an old search result as a current closure timetable. A Traffic Scotland A87 resurfacing notice describing 2026 works is archived, and its text records schedule changes. A separate Transport Scotland page for the A87 Sconser project describes proposed maintenance in financial year 2026/27 and says programme dates or working hours may be revised. Those notices illustrate why dates and arrangements need checking; they do not establish that a closure is happening today.

4. Check local roads separately

Traffic Scotland explicitly directs people to Road Works Scotland for local-road information. Check it for works on local roads relevant to your Skye destination; a trunk-road check alone is not a complete local-road closure check.

5. Use traffic cameras as an extra check

Traffic Scotland’s camera information can help you inspect views along a route where cameras are available, including a listing for the A87 Skye Bridge. A camera is a snapshot of visible conditions, not a substitute for a closure or works notice: it may not show the full route or explain traffic controls.

6. Recheck close to departure

Once you know the relevant roads, check the live and planned information again shortly before leaving. Notices and work programmes can change, so a route saved earlier—or a dated project page—may no longer reflect the arrangements for your journey. 7. Add a winter check when conditions call for it

If you are travelling in winter or difficult weather, consult Highland Council’s Winter Services: Isle of Skye information. Its 2026/27 winter-road map distinguishes primary and secondary routes. The map describes the winter network; it is not a promise that a road will be treated or clear.

If a journey in difficult conditions is necessary, the council advises checking that your vehicle is fit for the trip and carrying basic supplies, including warm clothing, food, a torch, boots and a shovel.
