Home Lab Scripts vs. a Local AI Model: Why My Scripts Won

For the fixed home-lab tasks I tried, scripts were simpler and more dependable. Here’s what Home Assistant’s Ollama integration can do—and how to decide for your own setup.

For the routine home-lab jobs I tried, my existing scripts were the better tool: they followed known steps consistently, while a local AI model added setup and a less predictable decision-maker without improving those tasks. That is a personal outcome, not a benchmark proving scripts always beat local models. The useful lesson is to match the tool to the job: use scripts for repeatable procedures and consider AI where conversational input or flexible interpretation adds real value.

What I compared—and what “won” means

The comparison is about choosing between a predefined procedure and a model that responds to open-ended requests. A script runs steps its author specified. A model can interpret natural-language input, but its response may vary and its ability to act depends on the tools and permissions it has been given.

In my home-lab workflow, the scripts won because the jobs I wanted done were already known and repeatable. I did not establish a controlled benchmark: there is no measured success rate, timing series, or model-specific hardware comparison behind that conclusion. Treat “won” as a description of my experience with those tasks, not a general performance claim.

When a script is the better fit

For an operation with fixed inputs and a clear expected result, a script is usually the more direct design. Its steps can be inspected, run again, and adjusted deliberately. A model is not automatically an upgrade simply because it can accept a conversational instruction; for a job that does not need interpretation, that flexibility may add another component to configure and troubleshoot.

  • Choose a script for recurring actions with defined inputs, steps, and success conditions.
  • Consider a model when a person needs to describe a request flexibly, or when AI-generated information can usefully feed a template, script, or automation.
  • Keep the two together when AI can interpret or produce data but a deterministic script or automation should carry out the consequential steps.

What Home Assistant’s Ollama integration actually does

Home Assistant’s Ollama integration connects Home Assistant to an external Ollama server. It can provide a conversation agent, and it can optionally let that agent control Home Assistant through the Assist API. Home Assistant labels this control option experimental.

Control is limited to the entities exposed to the model. Home Assistant recommends exposing fewer than 25 entities when experimenting, says that smaller models are more likely to make mistakes, and requires a model that supports tools for control. Its documentation cautions: “Smaller models may not reliably maintain a conversation when controlling Home Assistant is enabled.” These are reasons to constrain access and test a particular configuration, not proof that every model or installation will fail.

The built-in Home Assistant API for large language models works through intents and exposed entities; it does not allow administrative tasks. The developer API also describes tool annotations such as read-only, destructive, and idempotent. These distinctions help make clear what a tool is permitted to do, but they do not replace careful permission design.

Scripts and AI can coexist

Home Assistant’s description of its AI features draws a useful line: Assist traditionally handles a predetermined set of mostly home-control commands, while an integrated language model can respond to more open-ended questions. That difference is about interaction, not proof that one approach is faster or more reliable.

In its September 11, 2025 overview of AI in Home Assistant, the project describes AI Tasks that can generate data for templates, scripts, and automations, including structured output. It also describes an opt-in AI Suggest feature for naming and organizing automations. Those examples fit a hybrid workflow: let AI help interpret or prepare information, then use explicit automation logic for actions that need predictable behavior.

Local inference does not make every part of a smart home offline

A local Home Assistant installation and devices communicating through local protocols can continue to work without an internet connection. But “local” is not a blanket guarantee of offline operation: cloud-only devices and some remote-access or ecosystem functions still need connectivity. Home Assistant lists updates and app-store access among functions that require internet in its offline-operation FAQ.

The Ollama integration also connects to a separate model server; it is not itself a model or a hardware-sizing guide. Home Assistant documents server installation options for macOS, Linux, and Windows. Its hardware guidance lists a mini PC among possible Home Assistant hosts alongside a Raspberry Pi, NUC, or virtual machine, but that does not establish what CPU, memory, or GPU a particular local model needs. Choose hardware based on the model and workload you intend to run rather than assuming a Home Assistant host is sufficient for inference.

How to make a fair comparison in your own lab

Official Home Assistant documentation explains the integration and its limits; it does not compare scripts with local models head to head. To decide for your setup, compare the same operations and record what actually happens rather than assuming a winner.

  1. Pick representative jobs. Include the routine tasks you already automate and any task where natural-language input might save effort.
  2. Define success before testing. Specify the expected result, acceptable variation, and what counts as a failure for each job.
  3. Record the configuration. Note the model and version, inference host, prompts, available tools, exposed entities, and script or automation versions. Without those details, the result is hard to reproduce.
  4. Track relevant trade-offs. Compare correctness and repeatability, response time, failure recovery, setup and maintenance, internet dependence, and hardware or energy cost. Do not claim a win on a dimension you did not measure.
  5. Constrain actions before enabling control. For Home Assistant, expose only the entities needed for the experiment and test what the model can do before relying on it.

Where local setup can add friction

The complexity may come from the surrounding environment rather than AI itself. Home Assistant’s development-environment documentation notes that containers can have difficulty exposing USB devices and adapters. It also warns that default WSL NAT networking can complicate device discovery and LAN access. These are specific development and deployment caveats, not universal drawbacks of local models.

For a simple Home Assistant hub, the project recommends Home Assistant Green; it also lists Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, and virtual machines for other setups. That is guidance for running Home Assistant, not evidence that any of those options can run a particular model well. The Ollama integration’s separate-server requirement means inference capacity needs to be considered independently.
