Usually, yes—but whether your texts are in a backup or synced separately depends on the backup method and whether Messages in iCloud was enabled. With that setting off, iCloud Backup includes iMessage, SMS, and MMS messages. With it on, messages sync to iCloud instead of being included in the daily device backup. A computer backup also excludes messages already synced to iCloud.
Where your messages are saved
A backup stores a recoverable snapshot of device data. Sync keeps data current across devices and retrieves it from the cloud. For Messages, that distinction matters: when Messages in iCloud is on, your messages are handled by syncing; when it is off, they can be included in an iCloud device backup.

Apple’s iCloud backup guidance says that if Messages in iCloud is off, iCloud Backup includes iMessage, SMS, and MMS messages. If it is on, messages sync to iCloud and are not included in the daily device backup.

What each backup method does
| Method or setting | What happens to messages | What to expect when restoring |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud Backup; Messages in iCloud off | iMessage, SMS, and MMS messages are included in the backup, according to Apple. | Restore from the backup that contains the messages. Apple says texts and attachments are saved in the next iCloud Backup and download in the background during restoration. |
| iCloud Backup; Messages in iCloud on | Messages sync to iCloud and are excluded from the daily device backup, according to Apple. | After restoring, keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi so messages can download from iCloud. |
| Computer backup; messages already synced to iCloud | The computer backup excludes iMessages, SMS, and MMS already synced and stored in iCloud, according to Apple’s backup-method guidance. | Messages must be available through iCloud sync or included in a backup made when they were not already synced. |
| Encrypted computer backup | Encryption can include extra categories such as Health and Keychain data. It does not add messages already synced to iCloud to the computer backup, according to Apple. | Encryption affects which additional local-backup data is saved; it does not change the sync-versus-backup rule for messages. |
Will your text messages come back after an iCloud restore?
They should, if they are available either in the backup being restored or through Messages in iCloud. The two routes work differently:
#1 Best Overall
- Note: Magsafe is not available in this version
- High-speed Data Transfer: Lexar external SSD ES3 supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write to transfer files fast for more efficient work. (Performance may be lower if not supporting USB 3.2 Gen 2 on Mac and other systems)
- Wide Compatibility: Lexar Portable SSD ES3 compatibility with iPhone 17 series (Not supported on iPhone 14 and older models), Android mobile devices, laptops, cameras, Xbox X|S, PS4, PS5, gaming console, and more
- On The Go: Lexar external solid state drive ES3's thin, stylish, and durable design, weighs 42g and is only 10.5mm thick, making it smaller than a card and easily fits in your pocket. It comes with a Type-C cable for plug-and-play convenience
- Data Safety First: Lexar SSD ES3 includes Lexar DataShieldTM 256-bit AES encryption software to protect files
- Messages in iCloud was off: Apple says messages and attachments are saved in the next iCloud Backup. The relevant backup must have completed and contain the data.
- Messages in iCloud was on: the restored iPhone retrieves messages by syncing with iCloud. Keep it connected to Wi-Fi while that happens.
Apple does not give a fixed download time. Restoration time depends on backup size and Wi-Fi speed, and syncing can also depend on network conditions.
How to check that an iCloud backup is current
Apple’s current iCloud backup instructions say automatic backups run when the device is connected to Wi-Fi and power, with its screen locked. You can also start a backup manually and check when the last backup completed. If iCloud says there is not enough storage, follow the on-screen steps to address the storage issue before relying on a new backup.
For the current controls and steps, use Apple’s instructions for backing up with iCloud; exact screens can vary by software version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow computer backups and encryption affect messages
Apple’s backup-method guidance explains that computer backups do not include information already synced and stored in iCloud, including messages. On a Mac, Apple’s current instructions use Finder: connect the iPhone to the Mac, select the device, and choose the backup option. See Apple’s instructions for backing up an iPhone with a computer for the current steps; controls vary by platform and software version.
Rank #2
- Storage Capacity: 500 GB (gigabyte) of storage space.
- Compact Size: 2.5-inch form factor for portability.
- Multi-Platform Compatibility: Works seamlessly with PS4, Mac, phones (Andriods with USB C), and Xbox devices.
- High-Speed Data Transfer: USB 3.0/C for fast data transfer speeds.
- Sleek Design: Stylish and durable casing.
Local computer backup encryption is a separate option that must be enabled. It can save additional data, including Health and Activity information, but it does not override the exclusion for messages already synced to iCloud. Apple’s backup encryption guidance explains the additional categories and setup.

- Identify the source and settings. Work out whether the restore used an iCloud or computer backup, and whether Messages in iCloud was on when the backup was made. The setting and method active at that time determine where the messages should be.
- If Messages in iCloud was on, connect to Wi-Fi. Give the restored device time to sync; Apple does not promise a fixed completion time.
- If Messages in iCloud was off, check the backup. Confirm that the relevant iCloud backup completed and that it was made after the messages you need were saved. Apple says messages and attachments are saved in the next iCloud Backup.
- Look for another backup. Apple recommends checking whether another iCloud or computer backup contains the missing information. See Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for missing information after an iCloud restore.
- Check the device types involved. Apple notes that messages and attachments may not appear when restoring a backup made from a different kind of device, such as an iPad backup to an iPhone.
Does encryption change iCloud message protection?
Encryption affects security and which categories a backup can contain; it does not change whether messages are synced or included in a device backup. Apple’s iCloud Backup security overview says iCloud Backup includes conversations in Messages, including SMS and MMS where necessary, and describes how message backup keys are handled.
When Messages in iCloud and iCloud Backup are both used, Apple says that under standard data protection the backup includes a copy of the Messages in iCloud encryption key to help recovery. With Advanced Data Protection enabled, Apple says iCloud Backup and that key are end-to-end encrypted. These security details do not mean synced messages are duplicated in the daily device backup.
