Best Wi-Fi Adapter Cards for PC: Choose Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E

The best Wi-Fi card for a desktop is the one that works with your PC and router and supports the bands you can actually use. For a compatible Windows 11 system and Wi-Fi 7 router, a Wi-Fi 7 card such as the TP-Link Archer TBE550E is a forward-looking option. If you need 6 GHz Wi-Fi 6E rather than Wi-Fi 7 features, the Gigabyte GC-WBAX210 is a distinct alternative. Neither card can guarantee faster internet by itself: the router, operating system, drivers, signal conditions, and broadband connection all matter.

Which Wi-Fi card should you choose?

Start with your current hardware and what you want to improve, rather than the largest number on a product box. These two options serve different needs; Tom’s Hardware’s comparative test is useful context, but its results apply to its test setup rather than every home.

A system that needs Wi-Fi 6E rather than Wi-Fi 7.

Tom’s Hardware updated its roundup on October 6, 2026. Its test used a Ryzen 5 7600 desktop running Windows 11 Home, a 10 GbE server, and a TP-Link Wi-Fi 7 router; its reported results should not be treated as a guarantee for other computers, routers, or homes. Read the test setup and roundup.

What Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 add

Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band

Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 to 6 GHz. To use that band, the adapter, router or access point, operating system, and regional rules must all permit it. A Wi-Fi 6E card will not turn a Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 router into a 6 GHz access point.

Wi-Fi 7 adds newer capabilities

Wi-Fi 7 is based on IEEE 802.11be. Microsoft identifies Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 320 MHz channels on 6 GHz among its features. Windows support matters too: Microsoft says Wi-Fi 7 is available starting with Windows 11, version 24H2. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi guidance.

Even with a Wi-Fi 7 adapter, these features only work when the access point, PC operating system, drivers, and local regulatory conditions support them. TP-Link notes that 320 MHz at 6 GHz and 160 MHz at 5 GHz may be unavailable in some countries or regions. See TP-Link’s regional and feature notes.

Will the card work in your PC?

Check the exact adapter’s requirements before ordering. A PCIe card needs a suitable open slot and enough physical space in the case; wireless features also depend on a working driver and operating-system support. Product requirements can be narrower than a general compatibility list.

  • Operating system: Intel lists the BE200 and AX210 wireless modules for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its supported-operating-systems table. That does not establish support for every retail PCIe card built around those modules; check the card maker’s own product and driver information. Intel supported Windows operating systems.
  • CPU and motherboard: ASUS specifies Windows 11 and an Intel 13th-generation or newer CPU on Intel motherboards for the PCE-BE92BT, and warns that not all AMD motherboards are supported. Do not assume every Wi-Fi 7 card has the same platform requirements. ASUS PCE-BE92BT specifications.
  • Bluetooth: If you need Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi, verify that the specific card includes it and follow its installation instructions. ASUS lists Bluetooth 5.4 for the PCE-BE92BT; that specification should not be generalized to other adapters. ASUS PCE-BE92BT specifications.
  • Drivers and revision: Check the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and hardware revision, plus drivers for your Windows version. A chipset’s general OS support does not by itself prove the complete card is supported.

Do you need a Wi-Fi 7 router?

You do not need a Wi-Fi 7 router merely to install a Wi-Fi 7 card: the adapter can connect using capabilities shared with an older access point. But a Wi-Fi 7 card cannot provide Wi-Fi 7-only features through a router that lacks them. To use MLO or 320 MHz channels, confirm that the router or access point supports the relevant feature and band, and that the PC’s OS and drivers expose it. TP-Link explicitly makes advanced adapter features conditional on compatible access-point and PC OS support. TP-Link feature requirements.

What do advertised Mbps figures mean?

They describe wireless link or signal rates under specified technical conditions, not guaranteed downloads, file transfers, or internet throughput. TP-Link calls its maximum rates physical rates based on IEEE specifications and says actual throughput and coverage vary with the access point, environment, obstacles, and traffic. TP-Link rate and coverage notes.

For example, TP-Link’s up-to-6,452 Mbps MLO aggregate signal-rate claim for the Archer TBE550E is a manufacturer maximum, not a promised speed test result. ASUS advertises up to 5,764 Mbps at 6 GHz and 320 MHz for the PCE-BE92BT; this too depends on compatible equipment and conditions. TP-Link Archer TBE550E; ASUS PCE-BE92BT.

How to choose and install one

  1. Identify the bottleneck. If your desktop has no wireless networking, a PCIe card can add it. If it already connects reliably, replacing its adapter is most useful when the router and PC can use the newer band or feature you want.
  2. Check the router or access point. Confirm its Wi-Fi generation, supported bands, and features. For a 6 GHz upgrade, verify 6 GHz support; for Wi-Fi 7 features, check support for the specific features, not just the Wi-Fi 7 label.
  3. Verify PC compatibility. Match the card’s OS, CPU, motherboard, slot, case clearance, and driver requirements against your system. Pay particular attention to model-specific restrictions such as ASUS’s PCE-BE92BT platform notes.
  4. Compare like with like. Choose Wi-Fi 6E if 6 GHz Wi-Fi 6 is what your network supports and needs. Choose Wi-Fi 7 when the rest of your setup can use its capabilities and you want them. Treat manufacturer maximums as link-rate specifications, not predicted internet speeds.
  5. Install and position the antennas. Follow the card’s manual and connect any required cables or Bluetooth header as specified. Place external antennas where they have a clear path to the access point; if the case location blocks reception, an antenna base or extension may help when supported by the card.
  6. Install the correct driver and test. Use the manufacturer’s driver for your model and OS, connect to the intended band, and check the link status and real-world performance where you use the PC. A speed test measures the whole connection path, not the card alone.

Will a Wi-Fi card make your internet faster?

Only if the existing adapter is limiting the connection and the new card can use capabilities your router and internet service provide. A faster-rated card cannot raise the speed of the broadband plan, overcome a weak signal by itself, or make a single-band router transmit on 6 GHz. If speeds are poor, first compare performance near the router, check which band the PC uses, and consider interference, obstacles, router placement, and other network traffic before replacing hardware.
