To use a USB microphone and headphones on a Windows PC, select the microphone under Settings > System > Sound > Input, then select the headphones under Output. These are separate choices. If your microphone has a headphone jack, plugging headphones into it may provide direct monitoring, but that is distinct from using the headphones as Windows’ normal playback output.

Set up the USB microphone and headphones in Windows

  1. Connect the USB microphone to the PC. Open Settings > System > Sound, then choose the microphone under Input. Microsoft’s sound settings guidance covers selecting audio devices.

  2. Under Output, choose the headphones you want to hear through. Windows lets you select input and output independently; choosing the microphone for recording does not automatically route computer playback to a headphone jack on that mic. See Microsoft’s audio device guidance.

  3. Test the microphone in its Windows sound properties. Speak at a normal level, stop the test, and play the recorded sample. If it is too quiet or too loud, adjust the input volume and test again. Microsoft describes this test in its microphone setup instructions.

Choose where to plug in the headphones

Connection What it does What to select or check
Headphones plugged into the PC They play the computer audio routed to the selected Windows output device. Choose the headphones under Settings > System > Sound > Output. This is often the straightforward option for listening to the PC’s output mix.
Headphones plugged into a headphone jack on the microphone On models that support it, this can provide monitoring from the microphone. The available audio mix and controls depend on the microphone. Check the specific model’s manual and controls. Do not assume this jack also becomes Windows’ ordinary playback output.

Monitoring means hearing audio through the microphone’s headphone output; it is not a universal feature of every USB mic, and its routing and latency depend on the model. For example, Shure says the MV7+ has USB-C and XLR outputs and a 3.5 mm jack for monitoring. Its product page describes this as real-time monitoring; those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent performance test. See Shure’s MV7+ product page.

Confirm the app is using the right devices

A working Windows microphone test does not by itself confirm that a call or recording app is using that microphone. In the app’s audio or device settings, select the USB mic for input and your intended listening device for output when those controls are available. If the app offers no device selectors, use the Windows input and output selections and check the app’s microphone permission.

What to check when choosing a USB microphone

If you want to monitor through the microphone, look specifically for a USB microphone with a headphone jack; a USB connection alone does not establish that headphone monitoring is available. Before choosing a model, check its connection type, what its headphone output monitors, whether its controls suit your setup, Windows compatibility, and any required desktop software. For instance, Shure lists MOTIV Mix compatibility with Windows 10 and higher for the MV7+ and documents its 3.5 mm monitoring jack on the product page; those details apply to that model, not USB microphones generally.
