Hiking Insoles vs. Thicker Socks: Which Helps With Foot Comfort?

Thicker hiking socks add cushioning and warmth; insoles change support and shoe volume. The better choice depends on your discomfort and how your footwear fits.

Neither hiking insoles nor thicker socks are automatically more comfortable. Socks add cushioning and warmth while taking up more room; insoles change the footbed’s support and the space inside the shoe. Choose based on what is bothering your feet—and keep the option only if your hiking footwear still fits well.

What socks and insoles change

A thicker hiking sock adds padding around the foot, including under the heel and ball, and can provide extra warmth. It also uses some of the space inside your boot. Sock material matters too: choose a hiking sock suited to the conditions, rather than slow-drying cotton for active hiking. REI’s sock guide compares weights and materials, while its hiking-sock guide covers cushioning and fit.

An aftermarket insole replaces or changes the footbed. Depending on its shape and support, it can alter how your foot sits in the shoe and how much internal volume remains. A supportive insole may feel firmer rather than softer; its potential comfort benefit can come from stability or a better fit, not simply extra padding. See REI’s guide to choosing insoles.

Which option fits your problem?

Need or issue Thicker hiking socks Aftermarket insole
More cushioning Adds sock padding at the heel and ball. Check that the boot does not become tight. Changes the footbed feel; a supportive model may prioritize stability over softness.
More warmth Can help in colder conditions, but may feel too warm in hot weather. Warmth is not its main role in the cited guidance.
Roomy footwear or a low-volume foot A midweight sock may make the fit feel closer for some low-volume feet. A suitable insole may take up excess space, including around the heel.
Support or heel slippage Does not replace footbed support. Some supportive insoles may help stabilize the heel or address selected support needs.
Tight, pinching footwear More thickness can make tightness worse. An insole can also crowd the shoe. If fit remains poor, reconsider the footwear rather than adding more material.
Moisture or blister concerns Use a well-fitting hiking sock in an appropriate fabric; avoid slow-drying cotton for active hiking. An insole alone is not an established blister-prevention fix.

This is a functional comparison, not evidence from head-to-head clinical trials. The cited footwear guidance does not establish that either option improves comfort more for all hikers.

How thick should hiking socks be?

Start with the thickness that fits comfortably in the footwear you plan to hike in. REI’s guidance puts the rule plainly: “Proper sock thickness depends on the fit of your footwear.” Its sock guide describes midweight socks as more padded than lightweight options; heavier cushioning can suit colder weather or rougher trips, but may be bulky or too warm in other conditions.

Try the socks with your actual boots or shoes, not in isolation. A thicker pair is a reasonable experiment if the footwear has room and you want added cushioning or warmth. If it crowds your toes or creates pressure, it is not a comfort improvement.

Hiking Boot Insoles for Men & Women - Arch Support Inserts
  • Hiking Insoles for Men and Women: The arch is medium and cushioned, not stiff. They are soft enough for comfort over ten miles, but firm enough to keep your foot steady on rocks and roots. You will really notice the difference on long downhills
  • Up to 56% Shock Absorption: When you carry a full pack, every step can feel heavier. Our shock layer takes in up to 56% of impact before it reaches your knees and lower back, so you stay comfortable all day
  • Up to 47% Energy Return: The arch returns up to 47% of the energy you put into each step, rather than just absorbing it. It also helps take pressure off your knees when you walk downhill. By the end of a long day, your legs will feel the difference
  • Dry Feet on Tough Climbs: A breathable cover and non-sweat layer pull heat and moisture away from your skin, keeping your boots drier on steep climbs and in warm weather. Wet feet cause blisters, and this helps prevent them
  • Sized for Men and Women who Hike: Use the size chart to find your fit. Place your boots' insoles on top and trim around the front for an exact fit. These insoles are light enough for trail runners and tough enough for backpacking boots

When an insole is worth trying

Consider an insole when the issue is support, heel slippage, or excess room—not just because a softer surface sounds appealing. The right insert depends on both its support and its volume in your footwear.

  1. Remove the boot’s stock insole before testing a replacement, as REI recommends.
  2. Put the replacement in the shoe and check stability, pressure, and how your heel sits in the heel cup.
  3. Walk in the footwear and notice whether the insert leaves too much or too little room. Stop if it causes pinching or toe crowding.

These checks follow REI’s insole fit advice. A new insert should work with the boot’s fit; it should not force your foot into a cramped position.

Use fit as the deciding test

Evaluate any change in the footwear and sock thickness you intend to use on the trail. Check that your toes have room, your heel feels secure, and nothing pinches or presses against the foot. If adding either a sock or an insole creates tightness, pressure, numb-feeling tightness, heel instability, or toe crowding, stop treating extra thickness as the fix and reassess the boot or shoe. REI’s boot and shoe guide emphasizes matching sock thickness to footwear fit.

For rubbing at the top of a mid- or high-cut boot, consider sock height as well as thickness: a sock tall enough to protect skin from the footwear can help address that contact point. If a hot spot develops while hiking, address the friction early instead of walking until it becomes a blister. Blisters are associated with friction, pinching, or feet jamming against footwear; neither a thicker sock nor an insole is a guaranteed cure. See REI’s guidance on preventing common hiking injuries.
