1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor choosing which GPU a particular app uses in Windows 11, start with Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Windows’ per-app graphics preference takes priority over NVIDIA Control Panel’s preferred-processor setting when Windows has a preference for that app. Use NVIDIA Control Panel for global or per-program NVIDIA driver-level 3D settings; those controls do a different job from Windows’ GPU assignment.
Windows Graphics Settings vs. NVIDIA Control Panel: the difference
Windows Graphics Settings is the first stop for choosing a graphics preference for an individual app or game. NVIDIA Control Panel’s Manage 3D Settings is mainly for configuring driver-level 3D behavior, either globally or for selected programs. The two overlap in GPU selection, but they are not interchangeable panels.
NVIDIA states: “Beginning with Windows 10 20H1, the Windows OS assigns the graphics processor to use for various applications, and overrides any settings made in the NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Preferred graphics processor setting for that application.” (NVIDIA: Setting the Preferred Graphics Processor.)
| What you want to do | Where to go | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Set one Windows 11 app or game to prefer the high-performance GPU | Settings > System > Display > Graphics | Select the app, choose Options, select High performance, save, then restart the app. This sets a graphics preference, not a guaranteed frame rate. (Microsoft support.) |
| Choose whether an app should favor power saving, high performance, or Windows’ decision | Windows Graphics Settings | On systems with more than one GPU, Microsoft lists “Let Windows decide (Power saving),” “Power saving,” and “High performance.” Confirm which adapter each option represents on your PC. (Microsoft support.) |
| Adjust NVIDIA driver-level 3D behavior globally or for a program | NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings | Available controls depend on the GPU and app; examples include antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, CUDA GPU selection, power management, and texture filtering. (NVIDIA: Manage 3D Settings.) |
| Set NVIDIA’s preferred graphics processor for an app | NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings, if the control is available | Windows’ per-app preference overrides it when one has been set. NVIDIA says its preference is available when Windows has not set one; the control is not present on every system. (NVIDIA help.) |
How to make a game use your NVIDIA GPU in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Custom options for apps, select the game or app. If it is not listed, add it using the control available in your Windows build.
- Select Options, choose High performance, and select Save.
- Close and restart the game or app so the preference can take effect.
“High performance” is Windows’ preference category, not a promise of a particular frame rate. If your PC has multiple adapters, check which GPU Windows associates with the available options. (Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions.)

When NVIDIA Control Panel is the better choice
Use NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings when you want to adjust NVIDIA driver-level 3D features. You can apply defaults globally or make per-program overrides. The available settings vary by graphics card and application, so a particular option may not appear on every PC. NVIDIA’s reference lists controls such as antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, CUDA GPU selection, power management, and texture filtering (NVIDIA documentation).
Why your game may still use integrated graphics—or behave differently
Restart after changing the preference
A running app can keep using its current processor. Restart it after changing the Windows preference; NVIDIA gives the same advice for changes to its preferred-processor setting. (NVIDIA help; Microsoft support.)

The driver or app can affect the outcome
A graphics preference is not an unconditional hardware-routing command. NVIDIA says its driver may override a selection if a program requires a particular GPU for CUDA, advanced DirectX support, or compatibility. On supported hybrid-graphics notebooks, automatic switching between integrated and high-performance graphics according to program needs is normal. NVIDIA GPU Activity can show which programs and displays are using the NVIDIA GPU. (NVIDIA: Optimus and hybrid graphics.)
An external display may be connected to the NVIDIA GPU
If an external monitor is plugged into a port driven by the NVIDIA GPU, programs and video launched on that display use that GPU regardless of the preferred-processor selection described in NVIDIA’s help. Laptop port wiring and graphics modes differ by model, so check the computer maker’s documentation if a display behaves unexpectedly. (NVIDIA hybrid-graphics help.)

The NVIDIA preferred-processor control may be missing
Not every system exposes that control in NVIDIA Control Panel. NVIDIA describes it as available only on systems using its power-saving GPU technology. If it is absent, use Windows Graphics Settings for per-app selection when available. (NVIDIA: Setting the Preferred Graphics Processor; NVIDIA: Manage 3D Settings.)
Which setting should you choose on a laptop?
A high-performance preference can use more power and shorten battery life. For apps that do not need the discrete GPU while you are unplugged, choose Windows’ decision or the power-saving option. Reserve High performance for apps where you want to favor the discrete GPU, and keep in mind that the label does not guarantee a specific performance result. (NVIDIA hybrid-graphics help.)

What about NVIDIA App?
NVIDIA App has gained some settings that were previously associated with Control Panel, but its menus and feature set can vary by version. A report dated August 30, 2025 said version 11.0.5.245 added several 3D and multi-monitor functions; treat that as version-specific rather than a guaranteed current menu path. Check NVIDIA’s current app documentation for the controls available in your installation. (TechPowerUp, August 30, 2025.)
