If you want a rugged watch that works alongside your phone, first decide whether you need phone-paired alerts or cellular features that can work away from the phone. The Garmin Instinct 2X Solar is the clearer fit of these examples for outdoor navigation and solar-assisted endurance; the original 2022 Apple Watch Ultra pairs substantial durability specifications with an optional cellular model. Neither is a definitive ranking of today’s entire market: the cited Garmin launch information dates to 2023, and Apple’s specifications are for the original Ultra.
What “smartphone connectivity” means on a rugged watch
On many watches, connectivity means pairing with a compatible phone to receive notifications and use companion-app features. That is different from having cellular service on the watch itself. Garmin lists smart notifications and Connect IQ integration for the Instinct 2X Solar; Garmin says Connect IQ requires a compatible smartphone. Those features should not be read as proof that the watch can independently make calls or send messages.

Apple lists the original Watch Ultra as available in GPS + Cellular configurations, but cellular service requires an eligible plan and carrier. Emergency SOS has its own requirements: Apple says it needs a cellular connection or Wi-Fi Calling with an internet connection from the watch or a nearby iPhone. Check your carrier and region before treating cellular as a safety fallback.

| Garmin Instinct 2X Solar | 50 mm fiber-reinforced polymer case, Power Glass lens, 10 ATM water rating, and Garmin-stated U.S. MIL-STD-810 testing for thermal, shock, and water resistance. Garmin also lists multi-band GNSS, a three-axis compass, barometric altimeter, and TracBack routing. Garmin product specifications; Garmin announcement | Smart notifications and Connect IQ integration; Connect IQ requires a compatible smartphone. Features can differ by phone platform and region. Garmin product specifications | Garmin’s April 2023 claim of unlimited smartwatch-mode battery life assumes three hours of direct sunlight daily at 50,000 lux. It is conditional, not a promise of unlimited runtime in ordinary use. Garmin announcement | Garmin announced U.S. suggested retail prices of $449.99 for Instinct 2X Solar and $499.99 for Tactical Edition in April 2023. These are historical launch prices, not current offers. Garmin announcement |
| Apple Watch Ultra (original, introduced 2022) | Titanium case, raised edges protecting a sapphire front crystal, IP6X dust resistance, MIL-STD 810H testing, water resistance to 100 metres, and diving use to 40 metres within Apple’s stated conditions. Apple technical specifications | GPS + Cellular is a model option; Bluetooth 5.3 is listed. Cellular features require an eligible plan and carrier, and Emergency SOS requires the connection conditions Apple specifies. Apple technical specifications | Apple lists up to 36 hours under its defined test pattern. Which one fits your use?
Choose the Garmin example for outdoor navigation and solar-assisted endurance
The Instinct 2X Solar’s listed navigation hardware and TracBack routing make it the stronger match here for buyers who prioritize outdoor functions. It also has an integrated LED flashlight and health and activity features, according to Garmin’s April 2023 announcement. Solar charging may extend use when exposure meets Garmin’s stated conditions; it should not be treated as a guaranteed substitute for charging.

- 10 ATM water-rated and engineered to MIL-STD-810 for thermal and shock resistance
- Know your body better with health monitoring features, including wrist-based heart rate, advanced sleep monitoring, Pulse Ox and more (this is not a medical device, and data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked; Pulse Ox not available in all countries)

- Stay connected with smart notifications and Connect IQ Store integration, which allows you to download new apps and watch faces (when paired with your compatible smartphone)
Garmin’s durability and battery statements are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. A water rating or military-standard test claim is not a guarantee against damage in every circumstance.
Choose the original Apple Ultra example if cellular is important
The original Watch Ultra is the example here that explicitly lists an optional GPS + Cellular model. That can suit someone who wants certain connected functions away from an iPhone, provided their model, carrier, plan, and region support them. Its durability details and up-to-36-hour estimate apply specifically to the original Ultra introduced in 2022; do not assume they describe a later generation.

How to compare other rugged connected watches
- Phone ecosystem: Verify supported phone operating systems and which functions work with each. A notification feature may not offer the same replies or controls on every platform.
- Paired or standalone: Separate Bluetooth-connected alerts from watch cellular service. Confirm whether calls, messages, or safety functions need the phone nearby, a carrier plan, or Wi-Fi Calling.
- Durability evidence: Compare case and glass materials, water and dust ratings, and the specific standard or test the manufacturer cites. Treat claims as specifications, not proof of invulnerability.
- Battery under your routine: Look for the manufacturer’s test assumptions and account for GPS, cellular, notifications, and solar exposure. A headline maximum may not reflect your daily use.
- Outdoor tools: Check GNSS, maps or routes, compass, altimeter, activity profiles, and safety features; these can remain useful without a phone connection.
- Fit and readability: Compare case size, weight, display type, and visibility. A rugged watch can be physically large, and the 50 mm Garmin is a substantial watch.
