For a first watch, follow the TV seasons in release order: High School DxD, High School DxD New, High School DxD BorN, then High School DxD Hero. Watch Hero episode 0, “Holiness Behind the Gym,” immediately before episode 1. OVAs and short specials are optional; they can go after the season they accompany.
Recommended High School DxD watch order
- High School DxD — season 1, episodes 1–12.
- Season 1 extras (optional) — watch the OVAs and short specials after season 1 if you want the bonus material.
- High School DxD New — season 2, episodes 1–12.
- New OVA (optional) — place it after New if it is available on your service or in your edition.
- High School DxD BorN — season 3, episodes 1–12.
- BorN extras (optional) — the “Unresurrected Phoenix” OVA and short specials fit after BorN.
- High School DxD Hero episode 0, “Holiness Behind the Gym.”
- High School DxD Hero — episodes 1–12.
This season-adjacent placement is a practical way to fit in extras, not a claim that every short is in exact chronological story order. If a streaming service omits bonus material, you can still follow the main TV story.

How to handle the BorN-to-Hero transition
BorN’s last three episodes form an anime-original arc, while Hero returns to the light-novel continuity. Episode 0 revisits earlier events and sets up the version of events that Hero continues. That makes two viewing routes reasonable:

Complete broadcast order
Watch all 12 episodes of BorN, then Hero episode 0 and episodes 1–12. This is the simplest first-watch option if you want to see the complete season as originally broadcast, even though its final arc is not the basis for Hero.

Continuity-focused order
Watch BorN episodes 1–9, then Hero episode 0 and episodes 1–12. This skips the anime-original final arc and moves to the continuity followed by Hero. Episode 0 revisits material, so some overlap between the seasons is intentional; the episode-9 cutoff is an alternative, not a requirement.
Are the OVAs and specials necessary?
No. The OVAs and short home-video specials are optional side stories or character moments, not required chapters of the main television plot. Watch them after their associated season if you want the extra material, or skip them without losing the essential TV storyline.
Episode counts can vary by listing because bonus disc content may be counted alongside the broadcast episodes. A New Zealand Classification Office-hosted season document records season 1 as 12 television episodes, two OVAs, and six specials. It also notes that the specials were associated with DVD and Blu-ray volumes, while two additional full-length OVAs were bundled with limited-edition light-novel volumes. A service that lists only the 12 TV episodes has not necessarily omitted part of the main story.

A September 2026 guide lists Crunchyroll, Crunchyroll Amazon Channel, and Apple TV Store digital purchases as access options. The guide says the Amazon Channel requires a separate subscription beyond standard Prime membership. Availability is not guaranteed across countries or for every season and bonus episode, so check your local catalogue and episode list before relying on a service for the complete order.

KADOKAWA’s official product page documents a Japanese High School DxD HERO Blu-ray BOX, released August 30, 2023, with 13 episodes and catalog number ZMAZ-16781. This is a Hero box, not a verified collection of all four seasons. If considering a listing, confirm that it is the box rather than an individual volume, and check region compatibility, language and subtitle details, contents, and current stock.
