Microsoft introduced the control in preview update notes and says rollout is gradual, so it may not appear on every eligible PC yet.
Hide your name and picture in Start
- Open Settings. Press Windows key + I as a shortcut, or open Settings from Start. Microsoft’s Settings guide covers the app and its sections.
- Select Personalize, then Start.
- Turn on Hide your name and profile picture on Start. This is the exact setting name and path in Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 preview update notes.
If the setting is missing
Microsoft describes the feature’s rollout as gradual. Its August 27, 2026 notes list preview update KB5120998 for OS builds 26200.9278 and 26100.9278; its September 22, 2026 notes list the feature again in preview update KB5124006, OS build 28000.3086. Those notes confirm the feature in those previews, not that the toggle is available on every PC running a particular Windows release. Check Windows Update for applicable updates and look again later; Microsoft does not give a universal delivery date.

The September notes also mention other Start changes, including section controls for Pinned, Recommended, and All, plus an updated Start size option. Hiding your identity is not changing your account
The Start setting hides the name and picture from the Start menu display. It does not change or delete your account name or picture, and you do not need to edit either one to use the toggle.

- To replace or remove the account picture, use the separate instructions at Change Your Account Picture in Windows. Microsoft’s documented picture controls are under Settings > Accounts > Your info.
- To change the account name, follow Microsoft’s account-name guidance; the steps depend on the type of account.
