If you forgot your Google password, use Google’s official account recovery process. Confirm the account, answer the ownership questions as accurately as you can, and choose a strong password you have not used on that account when Google offers a reset. If you cannot access the recovery phone or email, continue through the identity-verification questions. Work or school accounts may need help from an administrator.
Reset a forgotten password for a personal Google Account
- Open Google Account recovery and enter the affected Google Account or Gmail address. Check that the address is correct; Google may show an associated name or photo to help you identify it.
- Answer the questions Google presents to confirm that the account is yours. Google advises giving the most accurate answers you can; if you are unsure, make your best guess. A device you have used to sign in before may help. Google says wrong guesses do not lock you out and there is no limit to recovery attempts.
- If Google offers a recovery phone or email, choose one you can access and follow the verification instructions. If neither is available, select the identity-verification option in the recovery flow and answer the ownership questions.
- When Google offers a password reset, create a strong password that you have not previously used on that account.
Google notes that recovery options and screens can vary by account, region, device, and security settings. Follow the options shown for your account rather than expecting a particular prompt.

Choose a recovery route you can use

| Neither recovery contact | Choose the identity-verification option and answer the ownership questions as accurately as possible. |
| Another signed-in device or second-step method | For some two-step verification problems, Google may offer another phone signed in to the account, an added phone number, a saved backup code, a hardware security key, a passkey on another device, or a trusted device. | Work, school, or other managed account | Contact the organization’s administrator. Personal-account recovery steps may not work for an account managed by an organization. |
If recovery is delayed or an option is unavailable
A recovery method is temporarily disabled
If you have tried a recovery option too many times, Google may temporarily disable that particular option and show when it can be used again. Try another available method in the meantime. Google says there is no limit to account recovery attempts, but that does not mean every individual method will remain available after repeated use.

For some recovery cases involving 2-Step Verification, Google says its ownership checks can take 3–5 business days. This is a conditional estimate, not a guaranteed wait time for every case.

You recently changed recovery information
Google says a change to recovery information may take up to 7 days to take effect. For future recovery, Google recommends a personal phone that can receive text messages and a regularly used email address different from the sign-in address. See Google’s guidance on setting up recovery information.
If you get back into the account
Review the account’s recovery details and security settings so you can use current contact information and available verification methods if you lose access again. Google recommends strong, unique passwords; a password manager can help create and manage them, but is optional. See Google’s password security guidance.

Avoid paid account-recovery services
Google states: “For your security, you can’t call Google for help to sign into your account. We don’t work with any service that claims to provide account or password support.” Use Google’s own recovery flow, and do not share your password or verification codes with anyone claiming they can recover the account.
