The change hides Explorer’s folder-like navigation presentation; it does not delete ZIP, CAB or RAR files, remove their file associations, or prevent you from opening and extracting them. If your Windows build does not show the checkbox, a Microsoft-hosted community reply describes an advanced registry workaround, but it is build-sensitive and not an official Microsoft support procedure.
What the setting changes—and what it does not
File Explorer can display an archive as though it were a directory. An archive may appear in the navigation pane, expand like a folder, and expose its contents when selected. This is a shell integration and presentation feature, not a conversion of the archive into a real NTFS folder.

Disabling the view changes only that presentation. The original archive remains in its existing location, with the same filename and extension. You can still double-click it, open it with an archive utility, drag files out, or use Extract All where Windows supports that operation. The setting does not erase data, unpack an archive, unregister ZIP or RAR handlers, or guarantee a performance improvement.

That distinction matters when troubleshooting. If your goal is to stop a program such as 7-Zip from opening archives by default, change the program’s file associations instead. If your goal is simply to keep archives from cluttering the navigation pane, use the Explorer view setting described below.

Disable compressed-folder display through File Explorer
The labels differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds, but the underlying route is Folder Options.
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Open the View menu. In Windows 10, choose Options, then Change folder and search options. In Windows 11, use the command bar’s View and Options controls; the exact placement can vary by build.
- In the Folder Options dialog, select the View tab.
- Look for Show compressed folders. Clear the checkbox, then select Apply and OK.
- Close and reopen File Explorer, or refresh the window. Check the left navigation pane and any archive that previously expanded like a folder.
When the option is present and applied successfully, ZIP and other supported archive files should behave as ordinary files in the navigation tree. Their contents are not removed. Open an archive from its normal folder to confirm that your extraction or browsing workflow still works.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 differences
| Situation | What to expect | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 | Microsoft’s documented route is View → Options → Change folder and search options, followed by the View tab. | Use the classic Folder Options dialog. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so wording and policy behavior may vary by build. |
| Windows 11 | View and Options are exposed through the command bar, but the dialog still contains the relevant view controls when available. | Open Folder Options from the command bar and check the View tab. |
| Checkbox missing | Some builds, organizational policies, or shell configurations do not expose Show compressed folders. | Do not assume the feature was removed everywhere. Verify the build, then consider the advanced registry fallback below. |
Windows 11 version 24H2 also changed the set of formats Explorer can handle natively. Microsoft Support states that 24H2 supports ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR archive formats. That format support is separate from whether Explorer displays an archive as a folder in the navigation pane.

Restore archive folders in Explorer
If you previously hid compressed folders and want the old browsing behavior back, reverse the same setting:
- Open File Explorer with Windows key + E.
- Go to View → Options (or View → Options → Change folder and search options on Windows 10).
- Select the View tab.
- Enable Show compressed folders, then choose Apply and OK.
- Restart or refresh Explorer if an already-open window does not update immediately.
Re-enabling the checkbox restores the navigation presentation; it does not change which application opens an archive or alter the archive’s contents.
When the checkbox is unavailable: the registry workaround
A Microsoft Tech Community reply from DaxxonFoster (Iron Contributor), dated August 22, 2025, says: “Uncheck Show compressed folders in Folder Options > View, or modify the Attributes value to b094010c in the registry to hide the navigation pane display.” The reply does not provide a complete registry-key path or promise identical behavior on every Windows build.

Treat this as an advanced, unsupported community workaround rather than a Microsoft-documented setting. Registry edits can affect the shell beyond the immediate window, and a value that works on one build may be ignored or behave differently on another.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Safer preparation before editing
- Create a restore point if your organization’s recovery policy permits it.
- Export the relevant registry key before changing anything, so you have a known backup.
- Change one value at a time and record the original data.
- Use an administrator account only if Windows asks for elevation; do not import a registry file whose origin you cannot verify.
Applying the reported value
- Open Registry Editor by typing regedit in Start search and approving the User Account Control prompt.
- Locate the shell key associated with the archive navigation item using the path or key identified for your specific Windows build. The community reply does not state a universal path, so do not assume a path copied from another version is correct.
- Export that key from the Registry Editor’s File → Export command.
- In the appropriate key, edit the Attributes value and set its data to
b094010c, exactly as reported in the community reply. - Close Registry Editor. Restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager, sign out and back in, or reboot if the navigation pane does not refresh.
If the change causes an unexpected shell problem, restore the exported key or return the original Attributes data. Because the key path is not specified by the cited reply, seek build-specific guidance from your administrator or a current Windows support resource before making a blind edit.
Explorer’s built-in archive capabilities in Windows 11 24H2
Microsoft Support says Windows 11 version 24H2 supports ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR archives. In supported cases, you can open a ZIP, drag individual files out, or select Extract All to unpack it to a folder. Those commands remain available whether or not archive items are shown as expandable folders in the navigation pane.

There is an important limitation: Microsoft says Windows 11 24H2 does not support operations on encrypted archive files. Use a non-Microsoft application such as 7-Zip or WinRAR when an archive requires a password or encryption-aware extraction. Hiding compressed folders does not add encryption support, and enabling the view does not remove that limitation.
The available built-in formats are version-specific. The cited 24H2 statement names ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR; it does not establish current built-in CAB behavior. CAB files may still be handled by Windows components or third-party tools depending on context, but this setting should not be presented as proof that every build offers the same CAB browsing or extraction support.

Choose the right fix for the symptom
| Your goal | Use | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Remove expandable archive entries from the navigation pane | Folder Options → View → clear Show compressed folders | Only Explorer’s folder-like presentation; archive files remain usable. |
| Restore expandable archive entries | Folder Options → View → enable Show compressed folders | Restores the presentation in builds that expose the control. |
| Hide the display when the checkbox is absent | Reported registry Attributes change to b094010c |
Advanced shell customization; path and behavior are build-sensitive. |
| Open archives with a different application | Change Windows’ default app or the archive utility’s file-association settings | Changes the handler for an extension, not the navigation-pane display. |
| Extract encrypted archives | 7-Zip, WinRAR, or another encryption-capable utility | Adds the required archive capability; does not depend on the Explorer view checkbox. |
Troubleshooting after changing the view
The archive still appears in the navigation pane
- Confirm that you selected Apply before closing Folder Options.
- Close every File Explorer window and open a new one; an existing shell window may retain the old tree until refreshed.
- Restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager if a normal refresh does not redraw the pane.
- Check whether a work or school policy controls Folder Options. Managed devices can hide or override shell settings.
The option is not listed
Windows build differences and policy restrictions are the most likely explanations. Do not substitute a random registry path from an older article. If you must test the community workaround, back up the relevant key, change only the reported Attributes value, and be prepared to restore it.

The archive will not open after hiding it
Hiding the navigation presentation should not disable opening or extraction. If opening fails, investigate the archive itself, its file association, permissions, corruption, or encryption. On Windows 11 24H2, encrypted operations require a third-party utility even though ordinary ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR support is built in.
You expected CAB support
The current Microsoft statement cited here specifically lists ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR for Windows 11 24H2 and does not confirm a universal CAB experience. Use a tool that explicitly supports CAB when Explorer does not provide the operation you need, and identify your Windows version before changing shell settings.
What disabling compressed folders cannot do
- It cannot hide archive files from every folder view, search result, or application; it targets the folder-like navigation display.
- It cannot convert an archive into a normal directory or unpack its contents.
- It cannot guarantee faster Explorer performance; no such improvement is established by the cited guidance.
- It cannot add support for encrypted archives or formats not supported by your Windows build.
- It cannot replace a file-association change when the problem is which program opens an archive.
For most users, the reversible Folder Options checkbox is the appropriate fix. Use the registry route only when the control is genuinely unavailable and you understand that the community-provided value and its location may vary by Windows build.
