Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAndroid Auto does not have a Google-approved list of three apps everyone should delete. The practical improvement comes from hiding three kinds of entries you never use: a duplicate navigation app, a duplicate music or podcast app, and an unwanted communication app. Hiding them removes clutter from the car launcher without uninstalling the phone apps.
You can change the launcher from Android Auto settings on your phone, then reorder the apps you actually use. The result is a shorter list that is easier to scan, but Google has not published a statistic showing a specific speed, battery or safety gain.

What “remove” means in Android Auto
In this context, remove means hide an app from the Android Auto launcher. It does not mean uninstalling the app from your phone, deleting its account or preventing it from working elsewhere. The phone application remains available from the phone’s normal app drawer and can be shown in Android Auto again through the same launcher settings.

Its ecosystem includes navigation, media and communication apps, along with other compatible entries. Google for Developers says: “Users can access and customize the app launcher, including changing the order and hiding apps.” That makes launcher cleanup a visibility and ordering task rather than an app-removal requirement.

The Android Auto screen also includes a dashboard icon and a recent-app area. That area can show recently used navigation, media and communication apps plus one additional app. Because the list is built around compatible apps and recent use, the exact icons and order can differ from one phone, car and Android Auto release to another.
There is no universal trio to hide
Google does not prescribe three named apps that every driver should remove. The right choices depend on which services are installed, which ones you trust for driving, and whether a particular app is supported in your country and Android Auto release. A driver who uses two navigation services for different purposes may reasonably keep both; another driver may want only one map visible.
Use the three categories below as a decision rule. Hide an app only when it duplicates a service you already use or is an entry you do not want surfaced while driving. Keep the app that handles the task you actually perform from the car screen.

The three app categories worth hiding
| Category | Hide when | Keep visible when | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duplicate navigation | You always use another map and never open this one. | You switch services for traffic, destinations, offline coverage or regional needs. | Voice destination entry, route information and availability in your region. |
| Duplicate media | You have a dormant music or podcast service that adds another icon. | You use it for a specific catalog, podcast feed, audio book or trip playlist. | Voice playback controls, library access and current Android Auto support. |
| Unwanted communication | You do not use the messaging service from the car and do not want it presented. | It is the service you need for hands-free conversations or message handling. | Contact access, voice actions and compatibility with your phone and car. |
1. Hide an unused duplicate navigation app
Start with maps. If you always navigate with one service, a second compatible map can make the launcher harder to scan without adding value. Hiding the unused map leaves your preferred navigation app in the list and avoids a choice you are unlikely to make while parked or driving.

Do not hide a map merely because you use it less often. A second service may be useful for a particular country, an offline route, a work account or a different traffic-data preference. The relevant test is whether you need that alternative from the car display. Google identifies navigation as a launcher category but does not say which provider should remain.
2. Hide an unused duplicate media app
Media apps are the second common source of launcher clutter. Keep the service that supplies the music, podcasts or other audio you play on trips, and hide alternatives that you installed but no longer open. Current Android Auto media changes have included services such as Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Gaana, PocketFM and TuneIn, but the exact set of supported apps can change by release and region.
Consider voice behavior before hiding anything. A service with the playlists, subscriptions or podcast queue you routinely request hands-free is more useful than one with a larger catalog you never use. If a household shares the car, keep an app visible when another regular driver depends on it; launcher simplicity should not remove a legitimate use case.

3. Hide a communication app you do not want surfaced
Communication apps appear in Android Auto’s launcher and recent-app experience. If several messaging services are installed but you use only one for hands-free communication, hide the dormant entries. This reduces the number of icons you need to interpret on the car screen and keeps the service you actually use easier to find.

Do not hide the app that receives the messages or contacts you need while driving. The decision should be based on your normal communication workflow, not on the app’s popularity. Compatibility can also vary, so an app that appears on one phone may not offer the same actions on another.
How to customize the Android Auto launcher
Launcher controls are on the phone, not on the car display. Google documents the feature in Android Auto settings, while noting that menu names can differ with the phone maker and Android version. If the labels below do not match your device, use the Settings search field and search for “Android Auto.”
- Open Android Auto settings on your phone. You can usually reach them from the Android Auto entry in the main Settings app. On a device with a different settings layout, search for Android Auto directly.
- Open the launcher customization control. Look for a setting named “Customize launcher” or a closely related label. This is the phone-side screen where Android Auto-compatible apps can be managed.
- Hide unused entries. Turn off, uncheck or otherwise hide the duplicate navigation, media and communication apps you do not use. The control is a launcher visibility setting; it is not an uninstall command.
- Reorder the remaining apps. Use the ordering control provided on your phone to place the apps you reach most often near the top. Put your primary map, media service and communication service in an order that makes sense for your routine.
- Return to Android Auto and verify the result. Open the launcher on the car display after saving the phone-side changes. If an app is still present, check whether it was recently used or whether the setting was saved under a different Android Auto profile.
The exact path, wording and interaction can change with Android versions and manufacturer software. The stable part of the workflow is to find Android Auto in phone Settings, open its launcher customization screen, hide compatible apps you do not use and reorder the rest.
Why a shorter launcher can feel better
Hiding unused entries removes choices that do not help your normal drive. That can make the desired icon easier to locate and reduce visual scanning. This is a usability expectation, not a measured Google performance result. No published statistic establishes how many apps drivers should hide, what percentage of drivers clean up their launchers, or how much faster Android Auto becomes afterward.

Launcher cleanup also does not change the underlying app, phone processor, mobile data connection or car hardware. It will not turn an unsupported app into a supported one, and it should not be presented as a guaranteed battery-life or safety improvement. The defensible benefit is a more personally relevant list and a preferred order.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When an app is missing from the launcher
A missing icon does not always mean you hid it accidentally. Android Auto shows compatible apps, and support can change with app releases, Android Auto releases and regional availability. First reopen the phone-side launcher customization screen and check whether the app is disabled there.
Check Samsung’s unused-app behavior
Google notes that Samsung phones may temporarily disable apps that have not been used for a while. If that has happened, Android Auto may no longer be able to present the app until the phone restores it. Open the affected app on the phone, or turn off the phone’s automatic unused-app or auto-disable setting if you want to prevent that behavior. Once the app is active again and compatible, check the Android Auto launcher settings.
Check compatibility and regional availability
An app can be installed on the phone yet fail to appear because it does not provide an Android Auto-compatible experience, because support changed in a newer release, or because the feature is not offered in your region. Media-player availability is particularly subject to release and regional differences. In that case, hiding and reordering controls cannot force the icon to appear.

Check whether you are viewing recent apps or the full launcher
The recent-app area is not a complete inventory of every compatible app. It emphasizes apps you used recently and can include navigation, media, communication and one additional entry. Use the launcher control or dashboard icon to reach the broader app list before concluding that an app has disappeared.
Choosing what stays visible
Use these questions for each candidate app:
- Primary use: Is it your normal navigation, media or communication service?
- Frequency: Do you use it on most drives, or only for a specific occasional need?
- Hands-free support: Can you perform the task with the voice and car controls you rely on?
- Duplicate function: Does another visible app already cover the same job?
- Compatibility: Does it work on this phone, Android Auto release, car and region?
- Shared-car needs: Would another regular driver lose a useful option if it were hidden?
Keep a duplicate when it serves a genuinely different purpose. Hide it when it is merely an unused icon. This approach avoids treating a category-level recommendation as a command to remove a particular brand or service.
What launcher cleanup cannot do
- It cannot uninstall an app or remove its account from the phone.
- It cannot guarantee faster startup, lower data use, longer battery life or improved driving safety.
- It cannot make an incompatible app appear in Android Auto.
- It cannot prevent a phone manufacturer from temporarily disabling an unused app.
- It cannot make media or communication features identical across regions, cars or Android Auto releases.
Those limits matter because Android Auto’s visible list is only one layer of the system. The phone app, Android Auto compatibility, manufacturer power management and regional support all affect what the driver sees.
A practical maintenance routine
Review the launcher after installing a new navigation, media or communication app, and after a major Android Auto or phone update. New compatible apps can add entries, while changes in support can remove them. Reapply your preferred order if the interface changes, and revisit hidden apps when your driving habits change.
For a shared vehicle, agree on a small set of visible essentials rather than hiding every app used by only one person. For a personal vehicle, prioritize the services you can operate hands-free and recognize immediately. If an app becomes useful again, return to Android Auto’s phone settings and enable it instead of reinstalling it.
The bottom line
There are no three universally correct Android Auto apps to remove. The most useful cleanup is to hide one unused navigation duplicate, one unused media duplicate and one unwanted communication app, then reorder the apps you actually use. Android Auto supports this from the phone’s launcher customization settings. Treat the result as a visibility and organization improvement, not a guaranteed performance measurement, and remember that Samsung’s unused-app controls, app compatibility, releases and regional availability can affect what appears.
