A Nature study published on 14 October 2026 shows that 5-aminovaleric acid (5-AVA) is not a passive processing aid in perovskite LED inks. During precursor-solution preconditioning, it follows competing reactions that produce two different compounds: an organoamidinium zwitterion that improves defect passivation and a Lewis-base lactam that harms performance.
The authors avoided that uncontrolled mixture by synthesizing the beneficial zwitterion separately and adding the purified product to the ink. Films made this way reached a mean peak photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 97.2%; the resulting PeLEDs reached a 37.1% champion external quantum efficiency (EQE) and 32.8% mean peak EQE.

Why the chemistry of the ink matters
Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are made from solution-processed emissive films. Additives are commonly introduced to control crystallization, reduce defects and improve charge or exciton behavior. That description can imply that an additive remains chemically unchanged while the film forms. The 5-AVA results show why that assumption is risky: the additive can react before deposition, so the material actually coating the substrate may not be the material originally weighed into the vial.
The study was led by Sung-Doo Baek, Yu-Ting Yang and Pengfei Wu, with Letian Dou as corresponding author. It appeared in Nature, volume 658, pages 629–635, on 14 October 2026.

What happens to 5-AVA during precursor preconditioning
The precursor solution is often held or otherwise conditioned before it is deposited. During that period, 5-AVA participates in competing in-situ reactions rather than simply acting as a physical crystallization aid.
- 5-AVA enters the perovskite precursor solution. The amino acid is present while the solution is being prepared and preconditioned.
- Reaction pathways compete. Chemical analysis found that the molecule can be converted through more than one route during this solution stage.
- Two distinct products accumulate. One route gives an organoamidinium zwitterion; another gives a Lewis-base lactam.
- The products have opposite effects in the film. The zwitterion supports useful defect passivation, whereas the lactam is detrimental to the optoelectronic result.
High-performance processing therefore depends on the composition created during preconditioning, not only on the nominal concentration of 5-AVA. A batch that receives the same starting recipe can contain a different balance of products if its solution history changes, making the additive appear helpful in one run and harmful in another.
Beneficial zwitterion versus detrimental lactam
The key distinction is functional, not merely analytical. The organoamidinium zwitterion is associated with passivation of defects in the perovskite emitter. The lactam is a Lewis base with the opposite practical consequence in this system: its formation introduces a chemically different additive species that degrades the desired film and device behavior.

Because both products originate during precursor handling, simply increasing or decreasing the amount of 5-AVA does not guarantee that the passivating species will increase proportionally. The solution can carry a mixture whose composition is set by reaction pathways that are not visible from the original weighing record.
Why adding the purified product changes the process
The authors’ intervention was to prepare the beneficial organoamidinium zwitterion directly, purify it and use it as the additive. This separates the intended passivation function from the reactions that generate the unwanted lactam.
- Defined chemical input: the additive is the characterized zwitterion rather than 5-AVA that may react after mixing.
- Less pathway ambiguity: the desired species is not required to form in the precursor vial before deposition.
- Better diagnostic control: any change in film or device performance can be related to the supplied product instead of an unknown mixture of 5-AVA derivatives.

How the pathways were identified
The authors combined liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Those methods were used to examine precursor components and synthesized additives, distinguish the products formed from 5-AVA, and connect their chemical identities with film and device behavior.

This matters because a device metric alone cannot show whether an additive is stable. Chemical analysis identifies what is actually present before and after the relevant processing stage; optical and electrical measurements then reveal whether that species helps the emitter.
What the reported device numbers mean
The 97.2% figure is the mean peak PLQY reported for films incorporating the purified zwitterion. PLQY measures how efficiently photogenerated excitations produce light from the film, so it is a materials-level optical result rather than a complete device-efficiency guarantee.
The PeLED results include a 37.1% champion EQE and a 32.8% mean peak EQE. Champion EQE is the highest reported device value in the set; mean peak EQE describes the average of the devices measured under the study’s stated laboratory conditions. Neither number establishes consumer-product performance, production yield or long-term operating reliability.

Why preconditioning can make nominally identical batches diverge
Preconditioning is a chemical stage, not merely a waiting period. If the competing pathways proceed to different extents, two inks with the same initial 5-AVA loading can deliver different proportions of zwitterion and lactam to the coating step. The Nature study establishes that this competition exists; it does not provide a universal rule that one fixed preconditioning recipe will produce the same product ratio for every formulation, colour or laboratory setup.
For process development, the practical lesson is to record and characterize the solution state rather than treating additive concentration as the only control variable. A useful control plan includes:
- Defining the point at which the precursor is considered preconditioned.
- Analyzing the solution chemistry when changing the formulation or emission colour.
- Checking whether a performance change tracks the beneficial zwitterion, the lactam or both.
- Comparing a directly synthesized additive with 5-AVA when the mechanism is uncertain.
Extension beyond one additive and one colour
The authors report that reaction-pathway control was extended to further additive chemistries and to red and green emitting systems. That result supports a design principle: identify the species that provides passivation, then supply or stabilize that species directly instead of relying on an uncontrolled precursor reaction.

The extension does not mean every additive or perovskite composition will behave identically. Each chemistry still requires its own structural identification, compatibility checks and device measurements.
What 5-AVA is and what a catalog listing does—and does not—tell you
5-aminovaleric acid is a commercially catalogued laboratory reagent with CAS number 660-88-8. Sigma-Aldrich lists it as product 123188 and identifies perovskite preparation as an application. A reagent listing confirms an available chemical identity; it does not by itself establish that a particular grade, seller, storage history or formulation is suitable for a PeLED process.
Limits of the current evidence
- The reported PLQY and EQE values come from the authors’ laboratory films and devices.
- The work does not establish consumer-product performance, manufacturing readiness or long-term commercial reliability.
- The study shows that competing reactions matter, but it does not turn every preconditioning variable into a universal manufacturing specification.
For researchers, the central implication is straightforward: additive engineering should control reaction pathways as deliberately as it controls concentration. In the 5-AVA case, making the useful zwitterion directly removed a hidden chemical dependency and produced the strongest reported PeLED results in the study.
