Hermes Agent is an open-source agent runtime from Nous Research. You configure it to use a model provider or endpoint; Hermes itself is not the model. The most dependable way to get started is to install Hermes, choose one provider and model, and confirm an ordinary chat works before adding tools, messaging, or automation.
What Hermes Agent provides
Hermes supplies the agent framework: a runtime and documented capabilities for interacting with tools, retaining memory, using skills, connecting to messaging services, and integrating with MCP. You decide which of those capabilities fit your workflow.

The model provider is a separate choice. It may be a hosted provider or a local or self-hosted endpoint, depending on the setup you choose. Check the provider’s current model access, credential requirements, endpoint details, pricing, and privacy controls; the available information does not establish one best provider or comparable prices and performance.

| Path | Who handles configuration | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Guided Portal setup | The quickstart provides a Nous Portal setup path. | You want the guided option rather than configuring every provider and tool yourself. |
| Full setup | You configure providers, tools, and other options yourself. | You want direct control over the provider and the capabilities enabled. |
| Blank-slate setup | The quickstart describes a reduced, blank-slate configuration; exact options depend on the current documentation. | You prefer to begin with less preconfigured and add what you need. |
These paths differ in setup control, not in a documented guarantee of model quality, cost, or performance. Their exact prompts and available choices can change, so follow the current Hermes Quickstart for the path you select.

Install Hermes and establish a provider
The Hermes Quickstart describes a shell installation path for Linux, macOS, and WSL2, and a Windows PowerShell installer. It directs users to the Installation guide for prerequisites and troubleshooting. Because the exact commands and supported details can change, use the current official Quickstart and Installation guide rather than copying an unverified command.
- Choose your environment. Use the installation path for Linux, macOS, WSL2, or Windows PowerShell that matches your system.
- Check prerequisites. Read the current Installation guide before running the installer, especially if you encounter a dependency or permission error.
- Choose one setup path. Select guided Portal setup, full configuration, or the reduced blank-slate path.
- Configure one provider and model. Enter the credentials and endpoint details required by that provider. For a local or self-hosted model, verify its endpoint and access requirements with the service or software hosting it.
- Test ordinary chat. Send a straightforward message and confirm Hermes returns a response before you add optional features.
The Quickstart’s guidance is: “Rule of thumb: if Hermes cannot complete a normal chat, do not add more features yet. Get one clean conversation working first, then layer on gateway, cron, skills, voice, or routing.” This is a practical troubleshooting boundary: a failed first conversation is easier to diagnose before additional tools or services are involved.
What to add after the first successful chat
Hermes documentation covers several extension areas. Add them to solve a specific need rather than treating every capability as a required setup step.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Tools and toolsets: Add these when the agent needs to take actions beyond a text conversation. Review what each enabled tool can access and do.
- Memory: Consider it when useful information should carry across interactions. Decide what information is appropriate to retain and review the project’s current configuration guidance.
- Skills: Use these to extend the agent’s capabilities for relevant tasks. Start with the task you want to support, then consult the current skills documentation for setup.
- Messaging gateway: Add a gateway if you want to interact through a messaging service or operate a bot. Check the current integration instructions and the service’s own account and access requirements.
- MCP integration: Consider MCP when you need to connect compatible external tools or services. Review the access granted by each integration before enabling it.
- Cron, voice, or routing: Add these only if scheduled operation, voice interaction, or directing work between models or destinations is part of your use case. Exact options and configuration should be checked in the current documentation.
Should Hermes use a local model or a hosted provider?
This is a provider and endpoint decision, separate from choosing Hermes as the agent runtime. A hosted provider may require an account, API credentials, and provider-specific billing. A local or self-hosted endpoint puts more of the model-serving setup under your control, but you must establish that the endpoint is running and that Hermes can reach it. The documentation does not establish a universal winner for cost, privacy, latency, or operational effort; compare those factors for the provider and workload you actually plan to use.
Rank #3
The quickstart explicitly addresses readers who want “a local or self-hosted model.” Follow its current setup guidance and confirm requirements with the endpoint provider or host. A dedicated local computer is optional: the documentation describes Linux installation but does not establish required hardware specifications.
Where should the agent run?
Hermes can be used locally, and the project documentation also lists remote terminal backends, including Daytona and Modal. A remote runtime can be relevant if you want execution away from your everyday computer, but it is distinct from the model provider: one choice concerns where terminal work runs, the other concerns which model Hermes calls. Confirm current backend availability, pricing, persistence behavior, and suitability in the relevant provider documentation before relying on one.

The official architecture guide is an orientation map, not a substitute for subsystem documentation. It points toward provider extension guidance and describes SQLite-based session storage with FTS5 full-text search. Developers investigating a specific implementation detail should follow the architecture guide to the relevant subsystem material and check the current repository code; the architecture overview alone does not establish every current implementation detail.
