Restart Windows Explorer when the desktop or taskbar is stuck
Windows Explorer runs the desktop shell, including the taskbar. Restarting it can restore a stuck shell, but it does not identify or fix every cause of File Explorer freezing.

Restart the PC and check for Windows updates
Microsoft recommends checking for updates and restarting when File Explorer will not open or start. Save work first if you can; if Explorer is unusable, restart from the Start menu or use the power options available on the sign-in screen.

- Windows 11: Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if prompted. Microsoft also recommends restarting when no update requires it.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, check for and install updates, then restart.

Use the additional checks listed for Windows 10
Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance includes several additional checks in its Windows 10 section. These older Control Panel-oriented steps are not a universal checklist for Windows 11.

- Consider Startup Repair if the problem is broader than Explorer and Windows is having trouble starting.
Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
A freeze by itself does not prove that system files are damaged. If Windows features are malfunctioning or the problem persists after basic troubleshooting, Microsoft recommends running DISM first and then System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt. DISM can provide repair files for SFC and normally uses Windows Update as its source.
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - Then run
sfc /scannowand wait until verification reaches 100%.
Microsoft documents a separate repair-source approach for systems whose Windows Update client is broken. See Microsoft’s DISM and System File Checker instructions if the commands report that they could not complete or repair files.

If the problem began after an update, consider removing it
If File Explorer started freezing immediately after a Windows update, uninstalling that update may help. Microsoft says this option does not affect personal files or apps, although some updates cannot be uninstalled. Use the Windows recovery instructions to find the applicable route for your version and situation: Recovery options in Windows.
For Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, Microsoft also lists reinstalling the current version through Windows Update while keeping files, apps, and settings. Availability depends on the Windows version and recovery scenario, so it may not appear on every PC.

Reserve reset or reinstall for persistent problems
Resetting or reinstalling Windows is a major step for an Explorer problem. Try a less disruptive applicable option first. Before using recovery, back up important files and have the BitLocker recovery key available if device encryption is enabled.
- Reset this PC: Reinstalls Windows. You can choose to keep personal files or remove everything; apps and settings are removed.
- Reinstall from installation media: The outcome depends on the process selected and can include removing everything.
- Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE): Provides advanced recovery tools when Windows will not start normally. A recovery drive or Windows installation media on a USB drive can help access recovery tools or reinstall Windows; neither is a routine requirement for a normal Explorer freeze.
See Microsoft’s recovery options guide and its Windows Recovery Environment overview before choosing a reset or reinstall path.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 continues to work, but Microsoft ended support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. See Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment page for the stated lifecycle information.
