Herculaneum Scrolls Push Metallic Ink Use Back at Least Four Centuries

Lead-rich writing ink in two carbonized Herculaneum papyrus fragments shows that metallic ink was being used by the first century CE—at least four centuries earlier than the conventional timeline for literary Greek and Latin manuscripts. The finding comes from non-invasive synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (XRF), which detected unusually high lead concentrations without opening or sampling the fragile fragments.

The short answer: metallic ink was in use by 79 CE

A peer-reviewed study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2016 identified intentional metallic material in the writing ink of two papyrus fragments from Herculaneum’s Villa of the Papyri. The library was carbonized when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE, so the material provides securely dated evidence from the first century CE.

Before this work, the practical historical model for literary Greek and Latin papyri treated ink as predominantly carbon-based until about the fourth or fifth century CE. Earlier reports existed, but they were not considered a firm basis for changing the broad timeline. The Herculaneum results move secure physical evidence several centuries earlier. The researchers described the change in Chemistry World in 2016 as backdating metallic ink “over four centuries, at least.”

That wording needs a careful qualification: the study establishes metallic ink in the sampled fragments, not a universal recipe used by every Roman or Greek scribe, and not the first metallic ink ever made in every culture.

What the Herculaneum fragments actually contain

Lead concentrations far above an incidental trace

The two fragments contained unusually high concentrations of lead. The PNAS significance statement says the levels were too high to be explained as ordinary contamination, supporting the conclusion that the metal was deliberately present in the ink. This is the key distinction between a detected element and evidence for a metallic writing material.

The result does not identify a complete formula. It demonstrates lead-bearing metallic ink in those fragments; it does not establish the proportions of lead, carbon, binder, or any other ingredient, nor does it show that every text in the Villa of the Papyri used the same mixture.

Why the date is so important

Herculaneum’s eruption supplies an unusually strong chronological anchor. The papyri cannot be later than 79 CE, and their archaeological setting links them to a Roman library containing Greek and Latin literary works. That makes the lead signal relevant to the history of manuscript technology rather than merely to an undated object whose age is uncertain.

How the old timeline changed

The evidence is best understood as a shift in the date of secure documentation, not as a claim that metal-free carbon ink suddenly disappeared or that all ancient writing became metallic. Several evidence layers now sit alongside one another:

Evidence layer Date or range What it establishes
Earlier working model for literary Greek and Latin papyri Carbon-based ink generally assumed until about the fourth or fifth century CE A broad historical expectation, with occasional earlier reports but limited secure physical evidence
Herculaneum papyrus fragments Before the 79 CE eruption Intentional lead-bearing metallic ink in two securely dated fragments
Researchers’ historical assessment 2016 study and contemporary reporting Metallic-ink evidence is backdated by “over four centuries, at least” relative to the prevailing timeline
University of Hamburg comparative project Approximately 300 BCE–600 CE; project reported for 2022–2025 Metal traces occur across a wider set of manuscripts and periods, including early Hellenistic examples

The Herculaneum paper therefore supplies an early, strong case for intentional metallic ink, while later comparative work suggests that metal-bearing materials were not confined to a single late-antique moment. Those findings should not be collapsed into one absolute “first use” date.

How scientists found ink inside burned scrolls

1. Map elements without taking a sample

The researchers used non-invasive synchrotron X-ray fluorescence mapping. A high-energy X-ray beam scans the surface, and each element emits characteristic fluorescent X-rays. By recording those signals across a grid, scientists can create an elemental map showing where lead and other elements are concentrated.

2. Compare the elemental pattern with the writing

An isolated lead particle could come from soil, storage materials, conservation work, or another source. In the studied fragments, the lead concentration and its relationship to the written areas supported the interpretation that it belonged to the ink. The published significance statement specifically treats the concentration as too high for ordinary contamination.

3. Preserve the evidence in a fragile object

Herculaneum papyrus was transformed into a brittle carbonized material by the eruption. Opening a rolled manuscript can tear or destroy layers that have survived for nearly two millennia. XRF mapping allowed the team to investigate elemental composition without unrolling the fragments or removing material for a conventional chemical test.

4. Use the chemistry to plan reading experiments

The measurements also informed computed-tomography (CT) experiments aimed at recovering text from scrolls that cannot safely be opened. XRF and CT answer different questions: XRF identifies elemental distributions, while CT records internal structure for computational reconstruction. The Herculaneum study connected the two by supplying information useful for optimizing CT work on unopened rolls.

Did Romans write with lead ink?

In the narrow, evidence-based sense, yes: at least two Herculaneum fragments from the Roman period contain writing associated with intentionally added lead. “Romans used lead ink” is too broad if it implies a standard empire-wide practice. The study sampled two fragments, and it does not provide a census of Roman writing materials.

Lead may have been selected for particular visual, chemical, or workshop reasons, but the Herculaneum publication does not establish the recipe’s purpose or its prevalence. The safe conclusion is that Roman-era scribes had access to, and at least sometimes used, metallic lead-bearing ink.

Does this prove ancient writers used iron-gall ink?

No. Iron-gall ink is a specific technology based on iron compounds reacting with tannins. Detecting lead in Herculaneum writing does not identify iron-gall ink, and the study did not establish a universal ancient formula. A metal signal can indicate different ingredients, mixtures, or contamination depending on the document and its context.

The later University of Hamburg project reinforces that caution. Researchers examined 73 securely dated papyri spanning approximately 300 BCE to 600 CE with XRF mapping, infrared reflectography, and Raman spectrometry. More than one third contained at least traces of iron, copper, or lead, including examples from the early Hellenistic period. Those results broaden the history of metal traces, but the presence of an element alone does not prove that it was intentionally added to the writing ink in every case.

How the later comparative project changes the picture

The Hamburg work is valuable because it tests many documents across a long period rather than focusing on two fragments. Its methods also combine elemental mapping with infrared and molecular information, allowing researchers to compare how a signal appears and whether it corresponds to visible or spectrally detectable writing.

Comparison axis Herculaneum study Hamburg comparative project
Material and context Two carbonized fragments from the Villa of the Papyri, preserved by the 79 CE Vesuvius eruption 73 securely dated papyri from a broad chronological and geographic corpus
Date covered First-century CE material, fixed by the eruption date Approximately 300 BCE–600 CE
Metals reported Unusually high lead concentrations At least traces of iron, copper, or lead in more than one third of the examined papyri
Analytical methods Non-invasive synchrotron XRF mapping XRF mapping, infrared reflectography, and Raman spectrometry
Interpretive strength Lead judged too concentrated to be ordinary contamination, supporting intentional metallic ink Shows wider and earlier metal occurrence; intent and formulation can vary by document
Imaging relevance Measurements helped inform CT experiments for unopened scrolls Provides broader evidence for manuscript reconstruction and material history

These projects answer related but different questions. Herculaneum gives a tightly dated, high-confidence case of lead-rich metallic ink. The Hamburg dataset shows that metal traces appear across a much wider manuscript history, including early Hellenistic material. Neither study alone names a worldwide first invention date.

What the discovery means for reading unopened scrolls

Carbonized scrolls are difficult to read because the writing and the papyrus layers can have similar physical densities, and unrolling can cause irreversible damage. A non-invasive elemental map adds another kind of contrast. Knowing where lead-rich writing occurs can help researchers evaluate how the ink is distributed and how imaging parameters might be chosen for CT scans.

This does not mean every unopened scroll can now be read automatically. Successful virtual unrolling depends on the scroll’s condition, the separation of its layers, the visibility of writing, and the performance of reconstruction algorithms. The Herculaneum measurements are an enabling part of that workflow, not a guarantee of legible text.

What is established—and what remains open

  • Established: two Herculaneum papyrus fragments contain lead at concentrations judged inconsistent with ordinary contamination.
  • Established: the fragments date to no later than 79 CE and therefore document metallic ink in the first century CE or earlier.
  • Established: the finding predates the prevailing fourth- or fifth-century CE timeline by several centuries; the researchers described the shift as at least four centuries.
  • Established: non-invasive synchrotron XRF identified the elemental signal and supplied information relevant to CT studies of unopened scrolls.
  • Not established: that all Herculaneum scrolls, all Roman texts, or all ancient cultures used lead-bearing ink.
  • Not established: that the lead-rich material was iron-gall ink or that it followed one recipe across periods and regions.
  • Not established: a single first-ever date for metallic ink worldwide.

Why this is more than a correction to a date

The result changes how historians connect writing technology with ancient workshops and libraries. A timeline that places metallic ink only in late antiquity can make earlier manuscripts appear technologically uniform by default. The Herculaneum fragments show that first-century scribes could use a metal-bearing formulation, while the broader papyrus survey indicates that material choices were more varied than a simple carbon-versus-metal sequence suggests.

It also demonstrates the value of combining conservation science with historical interpretation. The same XRF measurement that helps identify an ink ingredient can guide imaging decisions for objects that cannot be handled like ordinary books. In Herculaneum, the history of ink and the future recovery of lost text are therefore linked by one non-invasive analytical method.

Bottom line for the “first metallic ink” question

The most defensible answer is: secure evidence from Herculaneum shows intentional lead-bearing metallic ink in first-century CE papyrus, pushing the documented use of metallic ink back at least four centuries compared with the prevailing timeline for literary Greek and Latin manuscripts. Later surveys find metal traces in even earlier papyri, but because composition and intent vary, the evidence should be described as an expanding, sample-based history—not a universal invention date.
