ESA’s Hera spacecraft has completed a major deep-space maneuver, but it has not yet reached the Didymos asteroid system. In an update published on 17 March 2026, ESA said timed burns for the arrival sequence were planned to begin in October, followed by an approach expected to last about three weeks. Arrival was forecast for later in 2026, not confirmed.
What Hera’s “braking” means
To rendezvous with an asteroid, a spacecraft cannot simply fly past at interplanetary speed. It must carry out timed maneuvers to transition from its cruise trajectory into a path that allows it to approach and operate around the asteroid system. ESA’s March 2026 update distinguished those planned arrival burns from the deep-space maneuver Hera had just completed.

That earlier maneuver adjusted Hera’s orbit around the Sun to align its inclination with Didymos’s. ESA said it also provided a chance to test systems needed for the later braking and rendezvous sequence. It was a cruise-orbit adjustment and rehearsal, not the arrival brake itself.

ESA reported that Hera had completed the second of two deep-space maneuvers on its journey from Earth to Didymos. The maneuver campaign used 123 kg of onboard hydrazine and changed the spacecraft’s velocity by 367 m/s. Those figures apply to the reported deep-space maneuver, not to the future arrival sequence.

Francesco Castellini, a member of the Flight Dynamics team at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre, said: “This is the Hera mission’s largest manoeuvre in terms of fuel consumption, and we used it to test all of the systems that we will need during the braking and rendezvous manoeuvres later this year as we arrive at Didymos.”
When will Hera arrive at Didymos?
As of ESA’s 17 March 2026 operational update, arrival was expected later that year. The agency said timed burns were planned to begin in October and that the subsequent approach would last about three weeks. ESA did not give an exact arrival date in that update, so the schedule should be understood as a forecast, not a confirmation that Hera has arrived. Its earlier 7 October 2024 release had forecast an autumn 2026 arrival; the March 2026 account is newer and says “later this year.”

Why Hera is going to the Didymos system
Hera is ESA’s contribution to the international Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment collaboration. NASA’s DART spacecraft intentionally struck Dimorphos on 26 September 2022. Dimorphos is the smaller body in the binary system; Didymos is the larger primary asteroid. ESA describes Dimorphos as the first Solar System body whose orbit was measurably shifted by human action.
Hera will survey both objects, focusing particularly on Dimorphos and the physical consequences of the DART impact. Its measurements of the system, impact crater, surface and mass are intended to help scientists assess how a kinetic impact changes an asteroid and how reliably that technique could contribute to planetary defense.

ESA reported in 2024 that DART shortened Dimorphos’s orbit around Didymos by 33 minutes—nearly 5% of its original period. That is a result reported after DART, not a new measurement from Hera.
