For PM2.5 and smoke, choose a purifier with a high smoke/PM2.5 CADR and a high-efficiency mechanical filter such as HEPA. Activated carbon serves a different job: it adsorbs some gases, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors. During wildfire smoke or mixed urban smog, the most useful design combines both stages. Carbon alone cannot replace particle filtration, and a thin carbon sheet may become saturated quickly.

The practical decision is therefore not HEPA or carbon. Size the mechanical stage to the room using smoke CADR, then select as much carbon media as you need for odors or specific gases. Run the unit with doors and windows closed during polluted-air events, maintain both filter stages, and avoid products that intentionally generate ozone.

What PM2.5 and smog contain

PM2.5 means particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less. Smoke contains large numbers of these fine particles, so particle removal is the first indoor-air problem to solve. Smog can also contain gases, including VOCs and other pollutants. A purifier that removes particles efficiently may leave gas-phase pollutants behind, while a carbon stage that adsorbs gases does not mechanically capture PM2.5.

Why particle and gas removal are separate questions

Air-cleaner ratings and filter media are not interchangeable. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes portable cleaners as commonly using HEPA or another mechanical filter for particles and activated carbon for gases. A unit can therefore have excellent particle performance and modest gas performance, or the reverse. Read the particle and gas claims separately rather than treating a single “air-cleaning” label as proof of both.

How the two filter technologies work

HEPA and other mechanical filters

A mechanical filter removes particles as air passes through its fibrous structure. For this comparison, the important buying signal is smoke CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate), because smoke is a small-particle test category. Higher CADR means more particle-cleaning output and generally supports a larger room. EPA wildfire guidance says HEPA and other mechanical filters effectively trap smoke particles.

Activated carbon

Carbon removes gases by adsorption: gas molecules are physically attracted to surfaces within the carbon media. Adsorption is selective, not universal. EPA’s technical summary says activated carbon is common for gaseous contaminants but is not especially effective against nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and some low-molecular-weight aldehydes. The gas, the amount of carbon, temperature and humidity all affect results.

Carbon has finite capacity. Once the available adsorption sites are occupied, additional exposure can pass through with little further removal. EPA notes that thicker carbon media is generally better; a very thin carbon sheet can saturate quickly. There is no single consumer carbon number that ranks every purifier, because useful capacity depends on the target gas and the quantity and design of the media.

HEPA versus carbon: the decision in one table

Question High-efficiency mechanical filter (including HEPA) Activated carbon
Primary target PM2.5, smoke and other airborne particles Selected gases, VOCs and odors
Main performance measure Smoke/PM2.5 CADR No widely standardized consumer gas-removal rating
Best evidence to compare Published smoke CADR and room-size guidance Carbon mass or bed thickness, stated target gases and replacement guidance
Can it replace the other stage? No; it does not provide a gas-capacity rating No; carbon alone is not a substitute for particle filtration
Capacity limitation Particle loading increases resistance and eventually requires replacement Adsorption sites are finite; thin media may saturate quickly
Most useful during wildfire smoke Essential stage for PM2.5 reduction Helpful for smoke odors and some gases when the bed is substantial

Which is better for PM2.5?

HEPA or another high-efficiency mechanical filter is the clear choice for PM2.5. Select by smoke CADR rather than by the presence of the word “carbon” or by a generic room-coverage claim. Carbon can be a useful second stage, but it does not improve a purifier’s particle performance unless the complete unit also moves enough filtered air.

What removes wildfire smoke and smog indoors?

For wildfire smoke, use a portable purifier with a high smoke CADR and a mechanical particle filter. EPA guidance recommends a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. For example, a 300-square-foot room calls for at least 200 smoke CADR under that rule of thumb; a 600-square-foot room calls for at least 400. The figures are a sizing floor, not a guarantee that every room will reach the same concentration, because leakage, ceiling height, fan setting and room layout also matter.

Step-by-step sizing

  1. Measure the occupied room. Use floor area in square feet. If the ceiling is unusually high, account for the larger air volume rather than relying only on floor area.
  2. Find the smoke CADR. Use the smoke value on the product’s recognized label or specification. EPA identifies smoke CADR as the relevant small-particle indicator among common CADR ratings.
  3. Apply the two-thirds rule. Choose at least 0.67 times the room area in smoke CADR. Round up to the next available model.
  4. Adjust for open plans. Treat connected spaces as one larger effective area, or use multiple units positioned so that each serves a defined zone.
  5. Plan for operating conditions. A purifier run at a low fan speed delivers less air than its maximum rating. Select extra capacity if you need quiet operation or expect substantial leakage.

Examples

  • 150 square feet: at least 100 smoke CADR (150 × two-thirds, rounded).
  • 300 square feet: at least 200 smoke CADR.
  • 1,000 square feet of connected space: at least about 667 smoke CADR in total, often more practical as several units rather than one small-room model.

These calculations use EPA’s 2026 wildfire guidance. They do not convert a CADR into a gas-removal score; CADR is a particle metric.

How much carbon do you need?

There is no universal “carbon CADR.” Ask three separate questions instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which gas matters? Carbon performance is pollutant-specific. A claim about odor reduction does not establish removal of every smog gas.
  • How much media is present? A deep or substantial carbon bed generally lasts longer and holds more contaminants than a thin impregnated sheet. Exact useful life still depends on the gas concentration, airflow, temperature and humidity.
  • What does the manufacturer state? Look for named target gases, the amount or depth of carbon, and a replacement schedule. If those details are absent, treat gas capability as unquantified rather than assuming a large capacity.

EPA says adsorption is generally better at lower temperature and humidity. That does not make a carbon purifier a humidity-control device; it means real-world gas performance can differ as conditions change. Health Canada likewise notes that carbon or other absorbent filters may help with VOCs while gas-filter ratings remain poorly standardized.

Buying checklist for mixed smoke and smog

Specification What to look for Why it matters
Particle stage HEPA or another documented high-efficiency mechanical filter Provides the primary PM2.5 and smoke control
Smoke CADR At least two-thirds of the room area in square feet; more for open plans or lower fan speeds Sizes particle-cleaning delivery
Carbon stage A thick or substantial bed, with stated target gases where available More media generally provides more adsorption capacity
Gas claims Specific pollutants and test conditions, not just “removes smog” Carbon is selective and lacks a common consumer rating
Replacement filter Exact replacement model, availability and cost A purifier is useful only while its filters are serviceable
Ozone information CARB certification or equivalent independent low-ozone documentation Reduces the risk of adding ozone while trying to clean smoke
Energy and noise Published energy information and sound levels at the settings you will use Determines whether you can run the unit continuously during an event

Operating a purifier during a smoke event

  1. Close doors and windows when outdoor air is polluted. Otherwise, incoming smoke can overwhelm the purifier’s output.
  2. Place the unit in the occupied room. Keep its intake and outlet clear so the rated airflow is not obstructed.
  3. Use a higher fan speed when practical. EPA wildfire guidance recommends higher speeds and longer run times when conditions require faster particle removal.
  4. Keep the target room contained. Closing interior doors can reduce the volume the purifier must clean; for an open plan, distribute multiple units or size for the full effective volume.
  5. Continue operating while the source persists. Smoke enters whenever the building leaks or a door opens, so a short run may not maintain low particle levels.

Filter maintenance and replacement

Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and replacement instructions for both stages. Health Canada advises cleaning or replacing filters according to those instructions. A loaded particle filter can restrict airflow, while exhausted carbon may stop adsorbing gases even if the fan still sounds normal.

Checks to add to your routine

  • Record the date a replacement filter is installed.
  • Inspect the particle filter at the interval specified for your model, especially after a prolonged smoke event.
  • Replace the carbon stage on its stated schedule; do not infer remaining gas capacity from appearance alone.
  • Confirm that the replacement part matches the exact purifier model.
  • After servicing, verify that airflow is unobstructed and that the unit is operating in the intended mode.

Ozone and electronic technologies: what to avoid

Do not use an intentional ozone generator in an occupied space. EPA technical guidance states that intentional ozone generators should not be used there. EPA wildfire guidance also cautions that electronic technologies such as ionizers are not recommended for smoke removal when effectiveness is unclear and ozone may be produced.

Prefer a CARB-certified air cleaner or equivalent independently documented low-ozone product. ENERGY STAR’s 2024 criteria set a 50-parts-per-billion ozone limit for certified ozone-emitting models. Certification does not turn an electronic device into a smoke-removal substitute; still verify the mechanical smoke CADR.

Energy and efficiency labels

ENERGY STAR’s 2024 requirements specify minimum integrated energy-factor (IEF) bins for room air cleaners: 4.4 for PM2.5 CADR 30–99, 5.4 for CADR 100–149, and 5.6 for CADR 150 or higher. These bins help compare energy efficiency within the applicable certification system. They do not measure carbon adsorption and should not be read as a gas-removal rating.

Common mistakes and fixes

Choosing by advertised room area alone

Problem: A “large room” label may not show the smoke CADR used to support it.

Fix: Calculate the room’s two-thirds smoke-CADR target and compare the published smoke value.

Buying a thin carbon sheet for wildfire smoke

Problem: The sheet may help briefly with odor but provide little capacity for sustained gas exposure.

Ignoring ozone generation

Problem: An electronic feature can introduce ozone while its smoke effectiveness is uncertain.

Fix: Avoid intentional ozone generators and prefer low-ozone certification backed by an independent program.

Which configuration fits your situation?

PM2.5 is the only concern

Prioritize the highest practical smoke CADR and a high-efficiency mechanical filter. Carbon is optional unless odors or gases are also a concern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wildfire smoke with strong odor

Use the smoke-CADR sizing rule first, then choose a model with a substantial carbon bed. Expect the carbon stage to address selected odor-causing gases, not every component of smoke.

Urban smog near traffic

Use mechanical filtration for particles and inspect the carbon specification for the gases you are trying to reduce. Do not assume that a general VOC claim covers nitrogen oxides or sulfur oxides; EPA identifies those gases among pollutants for which activated carbon is not especially effective.

Large, high-ceiling or connected rooms

Calculate the larger effective volume and consider multiple appropriately sized units. Keep each unit in the zone where people spend time rather than relying on a small purifier at one end of a connected floor plan.

Bottom line

For PM2.5 and smog particles, HEPA or another high-efficiency mechanical filter with sufficient smoke CADR is the decisive technology. Activated carbon is a complementary gas and odor stage whose value depends on the pollutant and the amount of media. Buy for smoke CADR, add substantial carbon when gases matter, maintain both filters, and choose a low-ozone design rather than an intentional ozone generator.
