Choose Death Stranding if you want a longer, slower journey about carrying cargo, solving terrain, reconnecting settlements and benefiting from structures built by other players. Both are bleak, strange exploration games, but they make discovery mean different things: one asks you to interpret a place, the other asks you to learn how to cross it.
The short answer
These games overlap in mood rather than structure. Both put you in hostile, isolated worlds filled with unusual stories and supernatural danger. Their central activities are fundamentally different, however.

What each game actually asks you to do
Hell Is Us: investigate, interpret and fight
The official PlayStation description calls Hell Is Us a third-person action-adventure that combines intense melee combat with exploration. Its signature rule is explicit: “No map, no compass, no quest markers: following your instincts is part of the adventure.” You enter the war-torn region of Hadea, examine what is around you, follow clues and decide which lead deserves your attention. A drone helps with reconnaissance, while swords, spears and axes give the investigation a direct physical edge.

This is not simply a game with its map hidden in a menu. The design expects you to build a mental model of locations, remember landmarks and notice how objects, architecture and conversations relate. Discoveries are presented as the result of your choices, not as icons waiting to be cleared. GameSpot describes the approach as borrowing from classic point-and-click adventures: attention and curiosity can reveal side stories that a conventional objective list would make invisible.
#1 Best Overall
- A HOSTILE WORLD: In addition to the civil war dividing the country, the region is suffering from a mysterious calamity, which has given rise to supernatural creatures that no modern weapon can defeat. Your drone and sword from a different age are your faithful allies as you cut a path through lands infested with terrifying chimeras and try to unravel the mystery of their appearance.
- A UNIQUE EXPLORATION SYSTEM: No map, no compass, no quest markers. Following your instincts is part of the adventure. Enjoy a unique experience that uses innovative writing and level design to let you make your own decisions and follow your instincts as you explore. Your discoveries are yours alone.
- COMBAT AGAINST ORIGINAL CREATURES: Swords, spears and axes. A wide range of weapons forged specially for fighting these supernatural creatures is available. You must learn how to fight these monsters and use your drone wisely to stay alive.
- 'The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.'' – Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, Creative Director
Death Stranding: deliver, prepare and connect
Death Stranding is framed by PlayStation as a “genre-defying open-world adventure.” You play Sam Bridges, carrying deliveries across a decimated America while reconnecting isolated communities. Orders provide a clear reason to travel, but the interesting decisions happen between the order screen and the destination: how much cargo to accept, which equipment to bring, what terrain to avoid and when a longer route is safer than a direct one.
Walking is only the visible part of that loop. You balance a load, manage stamina and damage, climb, cross rivers, use vehicles when the ground allows and adapt when weather or threats disrupt the plan. PlayStation’s launch guide explains that successful deliveries can unlock tools, story developments and stronger chiral connections. Those connections increase the bandwidth available for online structures, making later trips easier when the community has built useful infrastructure.
Exploration and navigation: clues versus logistics
How Hell Is Us removes hand-holding
There is no conventional map, compass or quest-marker trail to tell you where to turn. You must infer direction from environmental details, dialogue and the physical layout of an area. That can make a discovery feel personal: you found a door because you understood the place, not because a waypoint pulled you toward it.
The trade-off is readability. GamesRadar calls the no-waypoint approach a “double-edged magical sword.” The absence of explicit objectives can draw you deeper into the world, but it can also leave you unsure whether you missed a clue or simply need to try something else. The game’s strongest exploration occurs in tightly authored spaces where details support one another. PC Gamer notes that later areas lean more heavily on atmosphere, so the quality of clue density is not identical everywhere.
How Death Stranding turns movement into a puzzle
Death Stranding gives you delivery goals and destination information, so it is not a no-interface mystery. Its challenge is route optimization. A mountain pass may be shorter but exhausting; a river crossing may be possible with the right tool; a road may cost materials now but save time on every future delivery. Reading elevation, weather and hazards becomes a practical skill rather than a way to decode a hidden plot.
As the chiral network expands, the world becomes a record of collective problem-solving. A bridge in the right valley, a watchtower near a difficult approach or a road connecting facilities can transform a trip. You still choose the route, but other players’ work changes the options available to you. That makes exploration less about being completely alone and more about learning how a landscape can be made manageable.

Combat and moment-to-moment tension
Hell Is Us puts melee in the foreground
Combat is a regular part of the investigation rather than a brief interruption. Reviews describe a melee system built around dodge, block and parry timing, with abilities that add options beyond basic attacks. The weapon set includes swords, spears and axes, giving encounters different reach and rhythm. You may enter a location to follow a clue and end up needing to read an enemy’s pattern as carefully as you read the room.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →TechRadar characterizes the game as a “semi-soulslike,” but that label should be treated as a description of combat texture, not a promise that every surrounding system follows the same formula. Its reported playthrough of a thorough review lasted a little under 30 hours; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a guaranteed completion time.
Death Stranding treats combat as one hazard among many
Threats exist in Death Stranding, including hostile people and supernatural entities, but the official framing emphasizes connection and traversal first. Your attention is usually on protecting a load, preserving stamina and reaching a delivery point. Avoiding a fight, changing your route or using equipment intelligently can be as important as winning an encounter.
This difference determines the feel of each game. Hell Is Us repeatedly asks whether you can respond to danger with the right attack or defense. Death Stranding more often asks whether you prepared well enough that danger does not ruin the delivery. If you want combat to be the main test, the first game is the stronger match; if you want risk management around a journey, the second is more coherent.
Atmosphere, story and the kind of isolation involved
The war-torn supernatural mystery of Hell Is Us
Hadea is defined by human conflict, abandoned or damaged spaces and chimeras that make the supernatural feel inseparable from violence. The game’s creative premise is not merely that the setting is gloomy. Creative director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête states: “The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.” That theme gives the investigation a human source of dread even when the immediate threat is otherworldly.
The atmosphere is concentrated. Authored locations are designed to reward looking closely at a particular place, then connecting its physical evidence to a wider mystery. The result can feel closer to exploring a haunted historical site than touring a giant sandbox. You are isolated because the world is fractured and dangerous, not because the game wants you to optimize a national-scale delivery network.

The post-apocalyptic connection story of Death Stranding
In Death Stranding, desolate America, extinction-level stakes and spectral threats surround a project of social rebuilding. Hideo Kojima described it in a PlayStation announcement as “a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society.” That goal explains why the game spends so much time on roads, facilities, cargo and communication.
The melancholy comes from distance and dependence. You may travel alone, but every delivery is meant to strengthen a network, and other players’ structures can appear in your world. Its atmosphere is therefore both lonely and quietly communal. The game asks you to sit with empty landscapes while believing that a connection made at the end of the trip matters.
Which game has less hand-holding?
Hell Is Us has less explicit guidance by design. There are no map icons, compass bearings or quest markers directing every step. You will need to tolerate uncertainty, keep mental notes and accept that an apparently unproductive conversation or object may become useful later.
Death Stranding provides more structure: orders identify what must be delivered and where it belongs. That does not make it simple. The hand-holding shifts from “where is the objective?” to “how will I reach it without exhausting Sam, damaging the cargo or wasting equipment?” Its interface explains the assignment, while the landscape remains the puzzle.
- Choose Hell Is Us if uncertainty about the objective is exciting.
- Choose Death Stranding if a clear objective paired with an open-ended route is more appealing.
- Expect frustration in Hell Is Us if you rely on waypoint confirmation to feel progress.
- Expect impatience in Death Stranding if long preparation and quiet travel feel like chores rather than play.
How the social systems change exploration
Hell Is Us is primarily an authored solo experience
The cited descriptions and reviews present Hell Is Us as a personal, solo adventure built around authored spaces, clues and encounters. Its discoveries are yours to interpret, and the absence of a shared construction layer keeps the focus on the mystery designed for your playthrough.
Death Stranding makes other players part of the terrain
Death Stranding uses asynchronous cooperation rather than conventional co-op missions. Players can contribute structures and resources through the chiral network. PlayStation specifically lists bridges, roads and watchtowers as examples, and explains that connection level determines how much online infrastructure can be supported. A structure built by someone else may save you a dangerous crossing; your own investment can make another player’s route easier.

Answers to the questions players usually ask
Is Hell Is Us like Death Stranding?
They are alike in their bleak settings, strange fiction and emphasis on isolation, but not in their core loops. Hell Is Us is an investigation-led action adventure with melee fights and deliberately sparse guidance. Death Stranding is a delivery and traversal game in which route planning, cargo management and asynchronous construction define progress.
Which is better for exploration?
That depends on what “exploration” means to you. Pick Hell Is Us for discovering what a place is hiding through clues and environmental interpretation. Pick Death Stranding for learning how to cross a place efficiently, then changing the landscape so the next crossing is easier.
Is Hell Is Us more atmospheric?
It is more concentrated and mystery-focused, especially in its tightly authored areas. Death Stranding offers a broader, quieter atmosphere built from empty landscapes, spectral danger and the melancholy of reconnecting a broken society. Neither mood is universally stronger; they create different kinds of solitude.
Recommended Free Tools
Which is better if I like walking, discovery and weird stories?
Choose Hell Is Us if discovery means interpreting clues and uncovering a local mystery. Choose Death Stranding if walking itself is the pleasure and you enjoy turning a difficult route into a reliable one while the story develops around that labor.
Final verdict
Hell Is Us is the sharper choice for players who want an authored mystery, minimal guidance and hands-on melee. Its strongest moments come from noticing something that the interface did not point out and understanding why it matters. Death Stranding is the better fit for players who want traversal and logistics to be the story’s grammar: every load, detour, bridge and delivery reinforces the idea of rebuilding connection. Decide whether you want to uncover the meaning of a hostile place or learn to make that place traversable, and the choice between them becomes straightforward.
