The Helio G91 is not a clear all-round performance upgrade over the Helio G85. Both are 4G MediaTek chips with the same broad CPU and GPU class; the G91’s more meaningful stated advantages are support for displays up to 90 Hz and a vendor-advertised 108 MP camera capability. Whether those features matter depends on what the phone maker actually puts in the handset.
How the Helio G85 and G91 compare
Both processors use eight Arm CPU cores built from Cortex-A75 and Cortex-A55 designs, plus Mali-G52 MC2 graphics. Their listed CPU ceiling is around 2 GHz and their GPU is listed up to 1 GHz. The specifications therefore do not point to a major change in core architecture between the two.

These are chip-level capabilities, not promises about every phone using the chip. MediaTek’s Helio G85 product page, Helio G91 product page and G85 infographic describe supported limits. A handset maker chooses the display, camera sensor, memory configuration and other components, and may not use every capability.
Is the G91 faster in benchmarks?
Available benchmark comparisons do not establish a dependable overall winner. NanoReview’s comparison page, accessed in 2026, shows a modest G91 lead in AnTuTu 11 and PCMark 3.0, but a G85 lead in Geekbench 6 CPU scores. Those results come from different sets of phones rather than a controlled test of two chips in otherwise identical devices.

These figures are NanoReview’s live comparison-site aggregates, not results from a matched-device lab test. See its Helio G91 vs Helio G85 comparison for the listed datasets.
A separate pair of 91mobiles listings gives a different AnTuTu picture: 271,962 for the G85 and 265,150 for the G91. The site labels those values as the highest recorded by a device using each chip. They should not be combined with NanoReview’s AnTuTu 11 aggregates as though they were the same test or collection method. Refer to the G85 AnTuTu listing and G91 AnTuTu listing.

Display refresh rate
The G91’s stated support for up to 90 Hz is its clearest listed display distinction. A 90 Hz screen can refresh more often than a 60 Hz screen, which may make scrolling and supported animations appear smoother. But the chip does not determine the panel installed in a phone: confirm the specific handset’s screen resolution and refresh rate before buying. The G85 product materials specify FHD+ at 60 Hz in the infographic, while its product page lists a maximum resolution of 2520 × 1080.

Camera resolution
MediaTek advertises 108 MP camera support for the G91, including in-sensor zoom. Its specification section separately lists 64 MP and 16 MP + 16 MP ISP modes, so the 108 MP headline should be understood as a vendor capability claim, not as evidence that every camera pipeline or G91 phone captures at that resolution. The G85 materials list support for up to 48 MP single-camera use and a 16 MP + 16 MP dual-camera mode. Sensor choice, optics and image processing in the actual phone still affect results.
What benchmark scores cannot tell you
Neither benchmark source establishes a controlled, same-platform comparison of sustained gaming frame rates, heat, throttling, power use or battery life. Those outcomes also depend on the phone’s cooling, software, battery and manufacturer tuning. MediaTek’s G85 launch announcement describes HyperEngine as managing CPU, GPU and memory according to power, thermal and gameplay measurements; that is a vendor description, not independent proof of sustained performance in a particular handset.
The same launch release reported up to 25 fps in the Manhattan benchmark. That is a MediaTek-reported launch-era figure, not a current head-to-head test against the G91. The release also quoted Yenchi Lee, then assistant general manager of MediaTek’s wireless business unit, describing the G85 as delivering “a combination of impressive performance, minimal power consumption and a range of other gaming enhancements.” Treat that as a company statement, not a measured comparison. See MediaTek’s G85 launch release.
Which chip should you choose?
Choose between phones, not just processor names. The G91’s 90 Hz display support and advertised 108 MP camera capability may be useful if the particular phone implements them. The benchmark evidence does not show that G91 is universally faster, and the shared CPU/GPU class means the chip label alone is a weak basis for predicting everyday speed.
Quick Recap
- Check the exact phone’s refresh rate and resolution rather than assuming it uses the chip’s maximum display capability.
- Check the camera sensor and the phone maker’s stated capture modes; a chipset headline does not guarantee a 108 MP camera.
- Compare RAM, storage, software support, price and condition across the actual models you are considering.
- For gaming or battery life, look for tests of the specific handset; these chip-level benchmark listings do not settle sustained performance or endurance.
