HDMI Port: How to Recognize Standard, Mini and Micro Connectors

A standard HDMI port is wide, shallow and slightly tapered, but mini and micro HDMI connectors are smaller. Here’s how to identify the right port and cable.

A standard HDMI port is a wide, shallow opening with a slightly tapered, asymmetric shape. Smaller HDMI ports also exist, so size alone matters: HDMI uses Type A (standard), Type C (mini) and Type D (micro) connectors. Look for an “HDMI” label, then check your device’s manual if the shape or fit is unclear.

What does an HDMI port look like?

The familiar full-size HDMI port is a low, broad opening, wider than it is tall, with gently angled sides. Its outline is asymmetric, so the matching plug fits in one orientation rather than flipping over. A device may label the port “HDMI,” but markings are not present on every model. HDMI Licensing Administrator identifies this standard connector as Type A. HDMI cable types and identification

How to tell which HDMI connector you have

HDMI ports come in three connector sizes. Compare the device opening with the plug you intend to use; do not force a plug that does not fit snugly.

Connector type Common name What to check
Type A Standard HDMI The familiar, broad port found on many TVs and other devices.
Type C Mini HDMI A smaller receptacle; confirm the type in the device manual before buying a cable or adapter.
Type D Micro HDMI Smaller still; check the device specifications and adapter description for an exact match.

These connector categories are identified in HDMI Licensing Administrator’s passive adapter guidance. The official material does not provide a side-by-side measurement chart, so when a compact device’s port is difficult to distinguish, use its model-specific manual or specifications.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Is USB-C the same as HDMI?

No. USB-C is a small, reversible connector with a different shape. Some USB-C ports can carry HDMI video using HDMI Alt Mode, but USB-C appearance by itself does not establish that video output is supported. Check the device specifications for explicit HDMI Alt Mode or video-output support. Manufacturers determine which HDMI features their USB-C products support. HDMI Alt Mode for USB Type-C

Will any HDMI cable fit the port?

Not necessarily. First match the cable plug to the physical port type. Then choose a cable category suited to the capabilities you need and supported by both the source device and display. A port’s outline does not show its HDMI specification, resolution, refresh rate, bandwidth, or support for features such as ARC or eARC; check the devices’ specifications instead.

When an adapter can help

An adapter can bridge a connector-size mismatch, such as between a device’s smaller HDMI receptacle and a standard HDMI cable. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes passive adapters for coupling or converting Type A, Type C and Type D connections, including compact and cable-style forms for different installation constraints. Compatibility and use limitations depend on the specific adapter, so check its manufacturer’s stated use case and confirm both ends match your source and display. HDMI Passive Adapters

A quick identification checklist

  • Look for an “HDMI” label or port symbol, but treat the marking as a clue rather than a guarantee.
  • Compare the opening with the cable plug: standard HDMI is broad; mini and micro HDMI are smaller.
  • Check the device manual or model specifications if the connector type is uncertain, especially on compact devices.
  • For USB-C video, verify explicit support in the device specifications.
  • Before buying a cable or adapter, check the connector types at both ends and the capabilities required for the intended setup.
