HDFC Bank credit-card costs are not set by one universal tariff. Your card variant, transaction type and payment behaviour determine the annual or renewal fee, finance charge, late-payment charge, cash-advance fee, foreign-currency fee, overlimit charge and applicable GST. The figures often quoted online therefore need a card-specific check against HDFC Bank’s current fee schedule and Most Important Terms and Conditions (MITC).

This guide explains how each charge works, identifies the few published figures that can be quoted safely, and gives a verification process you can use before relying on any amount.

Why HDFC Bank charges differ between cards

HDFC Bank issues multiple credit-card variants in India. Each product can have its own joining fee, annual or renewal fee, fee-waiver threshold, finance-charge rate, cash-advance fee and late-payment schedule. A figure shown for one card must not be applied to another card merely because both carry the HDFC Bank name.

Charges can also change according to the event that created them. A purchase paid in full by the due date is treated differently from a balance carried after the due date, a cash withdrawal, a foreign-currency transaction or a purchase converted to an instalment plan. GST and other applicable taxes are added according to the current schedule.

For that reason, use the card’s own product page, fee table and the latest MITC together. The MITC version identified in the available official material is Version 2.5; the rate example below is specifically an illustration in HDFC Bank’s 2025 MITC, not a promise that every card uses that rate.

At-a-glance comparison of the main charge categories

Charge or rate What it covers What is established What you must verify
Joining, annual or renewal fee Opening the account and keeping the card active for a membership year Fees and possible waivers are card-specific Exact rupee amount, billing date and waiver-spend threshold on your card’s current schedule
Finance charge on purchases Interest when an unpaid statement balance is carried The MITC explains the calculation; the 3.75% monthly figure is an illustrative 2025 example Your card’s monthly rate, annualised rate and daily-balance method
Finance charge on cash advance Interest on an ATM or other cash withdrawal It applies from the transaction date until full repayment, according to the MITC Your card’s cash-advance rate and any transaction-specific rules
Late-payment charge A fee when the required payment is not received by the due date The amount depends on payment timing and applicable card terms Slab, minimum amount due, grace rules and the current fee table
Cash-advance fee One-time fee for withdrawing cash Varies by card; Platinum Plus lists 2.5% with a ₹500 minimum Whether the percentage, minimum and taxes on your card differ
Foreign-currency fee Conversion and handling of an international transaction Listed among HDFC Bank’s applicable credit-card charges Your card’s markup, exchange-rate treatment and tax
Overlimit fee Using more than the assigned credit limit where permitted Listed in the official charge categories Whether overlimit use is enabled and the exact fee
GST and other taxes Tax applied to eligible fees, interest or services GST is identified as an applicable charge Tax treatment shown on the statement and current schedule

Annual and renewal fees

Joining fee versus renewal fee

A joining fee is normally associated with opening a particular card, while an annual or renewal fee is charged for continuing membership into a subsequent year. The amount, billing cycle and any promotional waiver are product-specific. Do not assume that a card advertised as “free” has no future renewal condition; check whether “free” means permanently free, free for the first year or free after meeting a spending requirement.

How fee waivers work

Many card schedules describe a spending threshold that can waive a renewal fee. The threshold is not universal: it may depend on the card, the membership year and which transactions count. Verify the qualifying period, the rupee threshold, excluded transaction types and the date on which HDFC Bank assesses eligibility. Keep statements showing qualifying spend until the renewal decision appears.

What happens if you close or downgrade

If a renewal fee has already posted, cancellation or product conversion does not automatically guarantee reversal. Ask HDFC Bank how the fee is handled for your specific account and whether a refund, pro-rata adjustment or retention offer is available. Obtain the response through an official service channel and keep the reference number.

Finance charges and the HDFC Bank interest rate

The published illustrative rate

HDFC Bank’s 2025 MITC includes an illustrative finance-charge calculation using 3.75% per month, equivalent to 45% per annum. This is an example used to explain the method; it is not a universal interest rate for every HDFC Bank credit card. Your card agreement and current MITC control.

When purchase finance charges arise

If you pay the statement balance in full by the due date, the purchase portion normally avoids a carried-balance finance charge under the terms of the card. If you pay only the minimum amount or another partial amount, the unpaid balance can attract finance charges. The statement may also include charges on new transactions until the account is brought fully up to date, depending on the card’s terms and the applicable calculation method.

How the calculation is presented

The MITC sets out the relevant rate and calculation convention. Statements can show a monthly rate, an annualised equivalent and a finance-charge line calculated from balances and dates. Compare the rate printed on your statement with the rate in the latest MITC; do not convert a monthly percentage to an annual figure yourself and treat that result as the contractual rate without checking the bank’s stated annualisation.

Illustrative arithmetic, not a quotation

At a purely mathematical 3.75% monthly rate, ₹10,000 outstanding for a full month would produce ₹375 before any tax or changes in balance. Real statements can differ because transactions, payments and the bank’s day-count method occur on different dates. This example demonstrates why paying only the minimum can be expensive; it does not establish your personal rate.

Cash advances: the fee and the interest start date

One-time withdrawal fee

Cash withdrawal is priced separately from an ordinary purchase. The Platinum Plus product page, accessed on 19 October 2026, lists a 2.5% cash-advance fee with a ₹500 minimum. This is a product-specific example. On a ₹10,000 withdrawal, 2.5% would be ₹250, so the stated minimum would make the fee ₹500 before applicable taxes. A different HDFC Bank card can have a different percentage or minimum.

Finance charges begin immediately

HDFC Bank’s MITC states: “Finance charges on cash advances are applicable from the date of transaction until the payment is made in full.” A cash advance therefore does not receive the purchase-style grace treatment many customers expect. The withdrawal fee and finance charge are separate items, and GST or other applicable taxes can increase the amount debited.

Safer way to handle an emergency withdrawal

  1. Check the available cash limit and the card’s current cash-advance fee before confirming the ATM transaction.
  2. Record the transaction date and amount; finance-charge accrual begins on that date under the MITC.
  3. Repay the cash advance as quickly as possible, while also meeting the statement’s required payment.
  4. Review the next statement for the withdrawal, fee, finance charge and taxes, and contact HDFC Bank promptly if any line does not match the applicable schedule.

Late-payment charges and missed due dates

A late-payment charge is triggered by payment timing and the terms attached to the card. HDFC Bank’s official material identifies late-payment charges but does not establish one amount that applies to all variants. The current card schedule should show the slab or formula, the minimum amount due and any conditions linked to the number of days payment is overdue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preventing a late charge

  • Set a payment reminder several days before the due date, allowing for bank-processing time.
  • Pay at least the required minimum by the due date; pay the full statement balance when possible to avoid carried finance charges.
  • After paying, confirm that the payment is credited to the card account, not merely debited from your bank account.
  • If a payment fails, make a replacement payment immediately and retain proof of both attempts.

If you have already missed the date

Check the account’s payment-credit date, the overdue amount and the late fee shown on the statement. Contact HDFC Bank through an official channel if a technical failure or incorrect posting caused the delay. A fee reversal is discretionary, so do not assume that a request will erase finance charges or reporting consequences.

Foreign-currency transactions

Foreign-currency fees cover the additional cost of processing an international transaction and converting it into Indian rupees. HDFC Bank lists foreign-currency fees among its applicable credit-card charges, but the supplied official material does not establish one markup percentage for every card. Your product page should identify the foreign-currency markup, the exchange-rate basis and the taxes applied.

When paying overseas or on an international website, review the final currency and choose carefully between local-currency billing and a merchant’s dynamic-conversion offer. The merchant’s conversion rate is not the same as HDFC Bank’s card markup. Keep the receipt in the original currency so you can reconcile the converted rupee amount on the statement.

Overlimit fees and credit-limit controls

An overlimit fee can apply when the outstanding balance exceeds the assigned credit limit, where the card agreement and controls allow such a transaction. HDFC Bank identifies overlimit fees as an applicable category, but the amount and permission vary by card. Interest, taxes or declined transactions can push an account over its limit even when a purchase itself was within the available amount.

How to avoid an overlimit event

  • Leave a buffer below the displayed available limit for pending authorisations and unposted fees.
  • Include annual fees, cash-advance fees, finance charges and GST when estimating available credit.
  • Pay before a large transaction if the payment will restore enough available limit after crediting.
  • Ask HDFC Bank whether overlimit transactions are enabled on your card and what consent rules apply.

GST and other applicable charges

GST is added to eligible fees and services according to the tax treatment in force. It can therefore appear on top of an annual fee, cash-advance fee, finance charge or other charge rather than being included in the headline amount. The exact tax line and rate should be read on the statement and checked against the current schedule.

“Other applicable charges” can include service or transaction items listed in the card’s MITC. Because these items and tax rules can change, retain the version of the schedule that applied when the transaction occurred if you need to dispute a charge later.

Purchase-to-EMI conversion: what to check

Converting a purchase into an instalment plan changes the repayment structure and can introduce a processing fee, an interest rate or both, according to the card’s current offer. The available official material confirms that HDFC Bank has other applicable charges but does not provide one EMI fee or rate that can be generalized across cards and campaigns.

Before accepting an EMI offer

  1. Open the offer details in the official HDFC Bank channel and note the principal amount, tenure and stated interest method.
  2. Check the processing fee, GST, foreclosure or cancellation terms and any effect on reward points.
  3. Compare the total payable over the EMI tenure with the original purchase amount, not just the advertised monthly instalment.
  4. Confirm whether the conversion changes your available credit immediately and when the first instalment will appear.
  5. Save the confirmation screen or message showing the exact terms accepted.

An EMI conversion does not erase unrelated account obligations. Continue making at least the required payment shown on each statement and monitor finance charges or fees on other balances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to verify the exact charges on your card

  1. Identify the variant. Use the card name and network printed on the card or statement; similar names can have different schedules.
  2. Open the current product fee page. Check joining, annual or renewal fee, waiver threshold, cash-advance fee, foreign-currency fee and overlimit fee.
  3. Read the latest MITC. Confirm finance-charge calculation, cash-advance accrual, late-payment rules, taxes and effective date. The MITC version cited in the official material is Version 2.5.
  4. Match the statement date. A fee may have been governed by the schedule effective when the transaction or billing event occurred, not by a later page.
  5. Reconcile every line. Separate principal, fee, finance charge, GST and any adjustment; do not treat a combined total as a single fee.
  6. Ask for written clarification. If the page and statement conflict, contact HDFC Bank through an official channel and request the clause and effective schedule used.

Common mistakes and practical fixes

Applying a rate from another card

Problem: A customer sees 3.49% monthly on the Platinum Plus page and assumes every HDFC Bank card uses it. Fix: Treat the Platinum Plus figure as product-specific; verify your own card’s MITC.

Confusing a cash fee with cash interest

Problem: Paying the one-time withdrawal fee is mistaken for settling the withdrawal. Fix: Budget for both the fee and finance charges that accrue from the transaction date.

Reading “45% per annum” as a universal price

Problem: The MITC illustration of 3.75% per month is copied as every card’s contractual rate. Fix: Use it only to understand the example; rely on the rate printed for your card.

Ignoring taxes in the available-limit calculation

Problem: A customer spends up to the visible limit and is surprised by an overlimit event after fees and GST post. Fix: Keep a buffer and include pending charges.

What to remember

There is no single HDFC Bank credit-card fee schedule for India. Annual fees, waiver thresholds, finance charges, late-payment fees, cash-advance costs, foreign-currency markups, overlimit fees and GST depend on the card variant and the transaction. The safest published numbers are carefully qualified: the 2025 MITC illustrates 3.75% per month (45% per annum), while the Platinum Plus page accessed 19 October 2026 lists a 2.5% cash-advance fee with a ₹500 minimum and 3.49% monthly interest on overdue balances. Cash-advance finance charges start on the transaction date under MITC Version 2.5. Verify every amount against the current product page, MITC and your statement before making a payment decision.
