HBM is usually the better choice when an inference service is bandwidth-bound and must sustain high concurrent throughput. GDDR7 is often the better value when board cost, capacity per dollar, and the ability to source conventional GPU boards matter more than peak bandwidth. There is no universal winner: model size, context length, batch shape, accelerator design, power limits, and delivery commitments determine the right memory.
In 2026, the headline specifications are far apart. Micron lists GDDR7 at up to 32 Gb/s and more than 1.5 TB/s of system bandwidth, while Micron lists HBM4 above 2.8 TB/s per stack. Samsung lists HBM3E at up to 1,180 GB/s per stack. Those figures describe different products and measurement scopes, so they are useful for positioning rather than as a neutral inference benchmark.

What HBM and GDDR7 are
HBM: stacked memory beside the accelerator
High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) places multiple DRAM dies in a vertical stack and connects the stack to the accelerator through an extremely wide interface. The memory sits next to the compute die on the same advanced package, allowing many data paths to operate in parallel over a short physical distance. This is why an HBM-equipped accelerator can deliver very high bandwidth without relying on a narrow, extremely fast external bus.
The trade-off is integration. HBM is selected, packaged, and qualified as part of the accelerator platform. It is not a DIMM that an operator can replace in a server after purchase, and adding capacity later generally means buying a different accelerator or package configuration. Stack height, capacity, packaging yield, and accelerator allocation all affect what can actually be delivered.

GDDR7: discrete graphics memory around a GPU
GDDR7 uses separate memory packages mounted around a GPU on a board. Each package communicates over a narrower interface than an HBM stack, but the memory is supplied as conventional graphics DRAM and integrated with a board layout rather than an advanced multi-die package. That makes board designs and sourcing comparatively more familiar, although the final product still depends on the GPU vendor’s memory controller, board power design, cooling, and qualification.
GDDR7 does not automatically mean low performance. A sufficiently wide board can exceed 1.5 TB/s of system bandwidth, and a workload that is capacity-limited, lightly batched, or otherwise not saturating the memory interface may see little benefit from HBM’s higher ceiling.
Bandwidth: the headline difference
| Memory technology | Published figure | What the figure means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| GDDR7 | Up to 32 Gb/s | Per-pin signaling speed listed by Micron | Product statement; board bandwidth depends on bus width and implementation |
| GDDR7 system | More than 1.5 TB/s | System bandwidth cited by Micron | Not a universal value for every GDDR7 GPU |
| HBM4 | More than 2.8 TB/s per stack | Bandwidth from a 2048-pin interface operating above 11.0 Gbps | Micron product statement for HBM4 |
| HBM3E | Up to 1,180 GB/s per stack | Bandwidth at up to 9.2 Gb/s per pin | Samsung product statement; generation and configuration matter |
The figures are not directly interchangeable. “Per stack” describes an HBM stack, while “system bandwidth” describes a complete GDDR7 memory system. A GPU may use several HBM stacks, or a GDDR7 board may have a different bus width and number of packages. Compare the bandwidth of the complete accelerator that will run the model, not an isolated DRAM data rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHBM4’s published per-stack figure is roughly in the multi-terabyte-per-second class, while the cited GDDR7 system figure is above 1.5 TB/s. HBM3E can also exceed a terabyte per stack. The practical question is whether the inference engine can keep that bandwidth busy and whether the model has enough resident capacity to avoid paging or replication overhead.
Why bandwidth matters in inference
Autoregressive decode
During token-by-token decode, each new token requires repeated access to model weights and the growing key-value (KV) cache. At small batch sizes, arithmetic units can wait for data, making memory bandwidth a primary limiter. HBM’s wide interface is valuable when the accelerator is otherwise underutilized because weights and cache data can be delivered faster.

As concurrent requests increase, the service can often use more of the available bandwidth. This is the operating point where HBM’s premium is easiest to justify: a higher-throughput accelerator can serve more tokens per second before another device is required. The gain is not guaranteed, however. Kernel efficiency, quantization, cache layout, communication overhead, and software scheduling can prevent a workload from scaling with raw bandwidth.
Prefill and long prompts
Prompt processing performs large matrix operations and can be compute-intensive, especially for long inputs. HBM can still help when weights, activations, or attention data must be streamed continuously, but the limiting resource may shift toward compute, interconnect, or host-to-device transfer. Benchmark both prefill latency and decode throughput rather than using one number for the whole service.

Continuous batching raises device utilization but also increases memory traffic and KV-cache occupancy. If the service is designed for many simultaneous sequences, bandwidth and capacity become coupled: a memory system that is fast enough but too small cannot hold the active cache, while a large memory pool with insufficient bandwidth can leave the compute cores waiting.
Micron reports a 2.6-times higher LLM-inference throughput for every two-times increase in bandwidth in a measurement using HBM4 36GB 12-high memory. That is a vendor claim under specified test conditions, not a general law or a head-to-head HBM-versus-GDDR7 result. Treat it as evidence that bandwidth can be decisive for a particular configuration, then reproduce the measurement with the model, sequence length, quantization, and batching policy you intend to deploy.
Capacity and scaling can overturn the bandwidth decision
Peak bandwidth does not tell you how many model weights and KV-cache entries fit on one accelerator. A model that fits on a larger GDDR7 board may outperform a faster HBM device if the HBM platform forces tensor parallelism across additional accelerators. Cross-device communication consumes bandwidth and adds latency, so compare usable capacity after reserving memory for runtime workspaces, attention caches, and the operating system.

TrendForce reported that AI-driven HBM demand was expected to raise capacity per AI chip from 96/192 GB to 216/288 GB during 2026. Those figures describe the market’s expected configurations, not a promise that every accelerator will offer those capacities. Verify the actual card or module specification, the number of stacks, and how much memory is exposed to your software.
For long-context serving, estimate KV-cache growth before selecting memory. Calculate the bytes per token for the model and precision, multiply by the maximum active tokens across all sequences, and add weights, temporary tensors, allocator fragmentation, and safety headroom. If the result approaches the device limit, capacity and scale-out cost matter more than the difference between published bandwidth figures.
Cost: HBM carries a premium, but total inference cost is broader
Memory and package cost
A CERN 2026 hardware-cost presentation characterizes GDDR7 as a lower-cost alternative to HBM for GPUs. HBM pricing is commonly negotiated through supply contracts and varies with generation, stack height, qualification, advanced-packaging capacity, volume, and delivery schedule. GDDR7 can lower the memory and board-cost portion of an accelerator, but there is no universal public dollar-per-GB table that applies across products.
TrendForce reported on September 29, 2026 that HBM supply constraints persisted and forecast blended HBM average selling prices to rise 121% year over year. That is a market forecast for blended HBM pricing, not the price of a particular accelerator or a guaranteed increase on every contract.

- Accelerator purchase or rental price and the number of devices required to fit the model.
- Achieved tokens per second at the target latency, not the theoretical memory bandwidth.
- Power, cooling, rack density, and electricity at the intended utilization.
- Host memory, networking, and interconnect costs when the model is split across devices.
- Software licensing, engineering effort, and the cost of idle capacity during demand troughs.
- Availability and lead-time risk, which can force expensive substitutes or delay deployment.
A GDDR7 board can reduce upfront cost yet raise operating cost if its lower bandwidth requires more boards to meet throughput. Conversely, an HBM accelerator can be uneconomic when its capacity is insufficient and an additional device is needed solely to hold the model. Measure cost per useful output under the service’s real concurrency and latency target.
Availability and procurement in 2026
HBM is a constrained part of the AI hardware supply chain. Gartner’s May 2026 assessment said the bottleneck had moved to the “memory-and-back-end stack,” including HBM and advanced packaging. TrendForce reported persistent HBM constraints through 2027. These statements describe industry conditions; an individual accelerator may still be available if its supplier has reserved capacity, while another may be delayed.
The principal named HBM suppliers in the cited material are SK hynix, Samsung, and Micron. SK hynix announced on September 12, 2025 that it had completed HBM4 development and prepared for mass production, with operating speeds above 10 Gbps. A development or mass-production announcement does not by itself establish that a specific accelerator, region, or order quantity is immediately obtainable.
GDDR7 generally offers a broader choice of board designs because it uses discrete graphics-memory packages, but “broader” is not the same as guaranteed stock. GPU allocation, memory-package qualification, board assembly, and regional demand can still constrain supply. Request written delivery commitments for the complete accelerator rather than assuming that memory availability guarantees card availability.

- How much memory is usable by the inference runtime after firmware reservations?
- What is the committed monthly quantity, lead time, and substitution policy for the region where the servers will operate?

Packaging, upgradeability, and power
Upgradeability
HBM is effectively fixed at manufacture. Capacity and stack count are part of the package design, so an operator cannot add HBM modules to an installed accelerator. Plan the largest expected model, context window, and batch envelope before purchasing. A later capacity increase usually means replacing the accelerator or adding another one and adapting the serving software.

GDDR7 boards are also not equivalent to upgradeable system RAM. Some board designs may expose replaceable or configurable memory packages during manufacturing, but end users should not assume that a purchased GPU can be upgraded. The practical difference is that board vendors can produce multiple capacity variants and the market may offer more models to choose from.
Power efficiency
Power per transferred bit is an important comparison axis, but it is a platform property rather than a single memory-generation constant. HBM’s short, very wide connection can reduce the signaling distance to the compute die; GDDR7’s external packages require board traces and high-speed I/O. Actual energy per token depends on the memory controller, signaling rate, package, GPU architecture, voltage, cooling, and utilization. Use measured board power at the target throughput instead of inferring efficiency from the data-rate label.

| Workload or constraint | Usually favors | Reason | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bandwidth-bound decode with high concurrency | HBM | More local bandwidth can keep the accelerator fed and increase tokens per second | Confirm the serving stack scales with bandwidth at your batch and sequence lengths |
| Large model or KV cache that must fit on one device | Whichever platform provides sufficient usable capacity | A capacity shortfall can force extra devices and interconnect traffic | Reserve memory for weights, cache, workspaces, and fragmentation |
| Cost-sensitive deployment with moderate bandwidth demand | GDDR7 | Lower expected board and memory cost can improve value when throughput is adequate | Calculate cost per token and sustained power, not purchase price alone |
| Very high throughput per accelerator | HBM | The platform is designed around a wider memory interface and high sustained bandwidth | Check package capacity, thermal envelope, and supply allocation |

| Long-context service with rapidly growing cache | Capacity-first selection | Bandwidth cannot compensate for paging or forced model sharding | Model cache growth at maximum concurrent tokens |
This table is an engineering guide, not a benchmark ranking. HBM is favored when bandwidth is the measured bottleneck; GDDR7 is attractive when capacity, board cost, or sourcing flexibility dominates. Either choice can be wrong if the accelerator’s software stack cannot use the available memory efficiently.
A practical selection procedure
- Define the service target. Record model, precision, maximum prompt and generation lengths, requests per second, time-to-first-token, per-token latency, and the concurrency you must sustain.
- Size memory. Add model weights, KV cache at the maximum active-token count, temporary tensors, runtime overhead, and a safety margin. Compare this total with usable—not advertised—device capacity.
- Measure the bottleneck. Profile compute utilization, memory throughput, cache misses, interconnect traffic, and host-to-device transfers during both prefill and decode. Do not infer a bandwidth-bound workload from model size alone.
- Build matched candidates. Compare complete accelerators with similar usable capacity, software support, thermal limits, and interconnect topology. A memory-only comparison hides platform differences.
- Run representative tests. Use the production model, tokenizer, quantization, context distribution, batching policy, and latency target. Record tokens per second, tail latency, power, and failure behavior under load.
- Calculate total cost. Divide fully loaded monthly cost by useful output at the target quality and latency. Include the number of devices needed, cooling, networking, software, and expected utilization.
- Validate procurement. Obtain delivery commitments, qualified memory configurations, capacity guarantees, and an approved substitution plan. Recheck these terms before placing a volume order.
- Plan for growth. Allow for larger models, longer context, and higher concurrency. HBM capacity is fixed in the package, while GDDR7 choices may be easier to vary across board models, but neither should be treated as user-upgradeable memory.
How to interpret vendor performance claims
Micron separately reports up to 33% higher AI-inference throughput for GDDR7 versus its cited predecessor baseline. The statement does not compare GDDR7 directly with HBM and does not specify that every GPU or model will realize the same gain. Likewise, Micron’s 2.6-times throughput result for a two-times bandwidth increase comes from an HBM4 36GB 12-high measurement under its stated conditions.
Use these figures to form hypotheses about bottlenecks, then test them on the exact accelerator and workload under consideration. A fair comparison holds model, precision, software version, batch policy, context length, latency objective, and power limit constant. Report sustained throughput and tail latency alongside bandwidth utilization so that a faster memory system is not credited for a gain caused by another platform change.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing per-pin speed with total bandwidth. A 32 Gb/s GDDR7 data rate is not a complete board specification, and an HBM per-stack number is not automatically the bandwidth of a multi-stack accelerator.
- Assuming more bandwidth fixes a capacity problem. If weights or KV cache do not fit, paging and sharding can dominate performance.
- Using a vendor claim as a universal benchmark. Preserve the test conditions and label the result as a vendor measurement.
- Ignoring packaging and delivery risk. HBM availability depends on stacks, advanced packaging, accelerator allocation, and contracts, not just DRAM wafer output.
- Optimizing purchase price instead of cost per token. Extra boards, power, cooling, and interconnects can erase a cheaper-memory advantage.
- Planning an end-user memory upgrade. HBM is package-integrated, and GDDR7 GPUs should also be treated as fixed configurations unless the manufacturer explicitly states otherwise.
Bottom line
Choose HBM for inference that demonstrably saturates memory bandwidth, especially high-concurrency decode and throughput-focused serving where the accelerator’s capacity and software stack are already designed around HBM. Choose GDDR7 when the model fits comfortably, measured bandwidth demand is lower, and lower board cost or broader GPU sourcing has greater value. In 2026, HBM offers the higher published bandwidth ceiling but faces tighter supply and contract-driven pricing; GDDR7 offers a lower-cost path with more conventional board integration. The defensible decision comes from a matched workload test and a procurement plan, not from the bandwidth label alone.
