What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: A custodial exchange gives your heirs an institution-mediated claim process, while a hardware wallet gives them no provider to petition. With self-custody, your family needs the correct recovery phrase, device credentials, and wallet configuration; with an exchange, the provider decides what evidence is sufficient. In Coinbase’s published U.S. process, an heir must provide a death certificate, probate or equivalent estate documents, government identification, and signed transfer instructions. Coinbase also says an individual account cannot currently name a beneficiary directly.
What the two inheritance models actually mean
Crypto does not pass to heirs simply because a person owned a device or had an account. The transferable asset is controlled by a private key. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that a private key authorizes transactions and cannot be replaced if it is lost. Your estate plan therefore has to preserve either the signing information itself or a reliable route to the organization holding it.

Hardware-wallet self-custody
A hardware wallet keeps signing operations on a physical device rather than on an internet-connected computer or phone. The owner controls the keys and does not ask an exchange to approve a transfer. The device is only one part of the arrangement: the recovery (seed) phrase, PIN, any additional passphrase, and the wallet’s configuration may all be needed. A device found without those details may be useless, while a recovery phrase exposed to someone else can allow immediate transfer.
The SEC’s Dec. 12, 2025 Investor Bulletin describes a cold wallet as typically a physical device that is generally more secure from cyberthreats than an internet-connected wallet. That security comes with a different exposure: a cold wallet can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Inheritance planning must address both kinds of failure.

Custodial exchange accounts
With a custodial exchange, the company holds or administers the account keys and maintains account records. An heir does not normally recover the assets by finding a seed phrase. Instead, the provider reviews the claimant’s authority and follows its deceased-account or estate procedure. This can be easier for a nontechnical family, but it introduces provider dependency, documentation requirements, processing time, and the risk that rules change.
Hardware wallet and exchange compared
| Question | Hardware-wallet self-custody | Custodial exchange |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the key? | The owner controls the private keys through the device and backups. | The custodian controls or administers the keys and account access. |
| How does an heir gain access? | By following instructions for the device, PIN, recovery phrase, passphrase, and wallet configuration. | By proving authority under the provider’s estate process and receiving an approved transfer or account disposition. |
| Main failure mode | Lost, destroyed, exposed, or incomplete recovery information; an overlooked passphrase or wallet may also block access. | Frozen account, missing legal documents, provider failure, changed procedures, or an unapproved claim. |
| Security profile | Offline signing reduces many online attack paths, but physical security and backup secrecy are critical. | Institutional account controls and identity checks reduce some individual mistakes, while creating dependence on the custodian. |
| Costs to plan for | Device purchase, replacement or backup devices, secure storage, and network transaction fees. | Custodian transaction, transfer, setup, or closure fees; the applicable schedule must be checked with the provider. |
| Estate complexity | Technical executor training and a carefully protected handoff plan. | Probate or equivalent authority, identity checks, forms, and provider review. |
Neither option is automatically safer for every family. Self-custody removes provider approval but makes one person responsible for every backup decision. Custody supplies a review process but can fail when an estate cannot satisfy the provider’s rules.
How to prepare a hardware wallet for inheritance
Do this while you are alive and able to test the plan. An inventory that an executor cannot interpret is not a succession plan.
1. Create an asset and wallet inventory
- List each hardware wallet, the networks and assets it controls, and whether assets are held in more than one account or wallet.
- Record the public receiving addresses or account identifiers separately from secrets. This lets an executor identify the estate’s holdings without exposing signing authority.
- Note any wallet-specific passphrase, multiple-device arrangement, multisignature setup, or other configuration that changes which information is required. If you cannot explain a configuration clearly, obtain professional technical help before relying on it for an estate.
2. Secure redundant recovery backups
Write the complete recovery phrase accurately and keep redundant copies in protected, physically separate locations. The backups must withstand the hazards you are planning for, such as fire, water, theft, or accidental disposal. Do not store the phrase in an ordinary publicly filed will, email, cloud notes, screenshots, or an unencrypted password document. Anyone who obtains the phrase may be able to move the assets, so a backup location should be chosen for both durability and controlled access.

3. Document the device and credentials without publishing the secret
Tell the executor where the physical signer is kept and how to identify it. Record where the PIN and recovery backup are stored, but use a protected handoff method rather than putting the phrase in a document that will circulate widely. If an additional passphrase is used, explain that it exists and how its protected location fits into the plan; a seed phrase alone may open a different wallet or no useful wallet at all.
Ledger’s inheritance guidance says heirs may need the physical signer and PIN or the complete seed phrase, and recommends documenting where the device, PIN, and backup are stored. That is a practical minimum, not proof that every wallet uses the same recovery process.
4. Choose and brief a capable executor
Appoint someone who can follow written security instructions and recognize a phishing attempt. Give that person a supervised orientation using a nonvaluable test wallet if possible. Demonstrate how to connect the device, verify an address on the device screen, and restore a wallet without revealing the phrase to a camera, browser extension, or helper who does not need it. The goal is familiarity, not giving the executor unsupervised access during your lifetime.
5. Separate legal instructions from secret material
Your will or trust can identify the assets, name the fiduciary, and direct the fiduciary to use the protected instructions. It should not expose a recovery phrase in a publicly filed probate document. Coordinate the location and release conditions of the secret with an estate attorney so that the fiduciary can obtain it lawfully and promptly after death or incapacity.

6. Test recovery and update after every change
Periodically verify that a backup restores the intended wallet and that the addresses match your inventory. Update the plan after changing a device, moving a backup, adding a passphrase, opening a new account, or transferring assets. A written date on the inventory helps the executor distinguish current instructions from obsolete ones.
How a custodial exchange claim works after death
Provider procedures differ, so an exchange’s current U.S. instructions should be checked directly rather than inferred from another company’s policy. Coinbase’s deceased-account page states that its individual accounts cannot currently name a beneficiary directly. It lists a death certificate, probate or equivalent estate documents, government identification, and signed transfer instructions for a claim.
What the executor should gather
- A certified or otherwise acceptable death certificate, according to the provider’s current requirements.
- Probate documents or equivalent evidence of authority to act for the estate.
- Government-issued identification for the claimant.
- Signed transfer instructions and any account information the provider requests.
The exact document format, submission channel, acceptable alternatives, and fees can change. The executor should use the provider’s official deceased-account or estate-support channel, retain copies of every submission, and avoid sending credentials to an unverified email address or “recovery” service.

What happens during provider review
The custodian verifies the claimant’s identity and legal authority before approving a transfer or other account disposition. Access may be restricted while the review is pending. If probate has not been opened, the estate may need to obtain the jurisdiction’s equivalent authority first. Estate, tax, and fiduciary rules vary by jurisdiction; a substantial holding warrants qualified legal and tax advice before instructions are signed.

Why a beneficiary feature would matter
A beneficiary designation can provide a direct administrative route, but its availability and legal effect are provider-specific. Coinbase’s published statement that individual accounts cannot currently name a beneficiary means an owner cannot assume that adding a contact, emergency person, or joint household member creates a transfer-on-death right.

A hybrid arrangement can keep long-term holdings in self-custody while maintaining a smaller custodial balance for ordinary liquidity or for heirs who are uncomfortable with wallet operations. This does not eliminate planning work: each side needs its own inventory, authority path, and security controls.
- Document which assets are self-custodied and which are at the custodian; do not make the executor guess from tax records or transaction history.
- Give the executor separate instructions for the hardware wallet and the exchange’s estate process.
- Keep only an amount at the custodian that the family is willing to subject to provider rules, account freezes, and applicable fees.
- Review the arrangement whenever the provider changes its beneficiary or deceased-account capabilities.
Common inheritance failures and how to prevent them
| Failure | Why it happens | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| The device is found, but no PIN or phrase is available. | Ownership of hardware does not establish signing authority. | Record protected locations for the PIN and complete recovery backup, and brief the executor. |
| The phrase is available, but the wallet appears empty. | A passphrase, different account, network, or derivation configuration was omitted. | Inventory every wallet configuration and test restoration before an emergency. |
| A recovery phrase is stolen before death. | It was emailed, photographed, uploaded, or stored where others could read it. | Use offline, physically protected backups and limit knowledge of their locations. |
| An exchange rejects the estate claim. | Required death, probate, identity, or signed-transfer documents are missing or inconsistent. | Read the provider’s current deceased-account instructions and obtain legal advice when authority is unclear. |
| Heirs follow a fake support account. | Public death announcements and crypto holdings attract phishing attempts. | Use only the provider’s verified website or contact path and never disclose a recovery phrase to support staff. |
| Instructions are obsolete. | Assets, devices, storage locations, or provider rules changed. | Schedule a review and record the date of the latest inventory. |
Legal and governance issues to resolve in advance
Estate documents should identify who has authority, how digital assets are to be transferred, and where protected instructions can be obtained. The governing law may distinguish between an executor, trustee, agent under a power of attorney, and a beneficiary. It may also impose tax reporting, valuation, or fiduciary duties. Those questions cannot be answered safely with a generic online template because jurisdiction and estate size matter.

Provider governance is also part of the risk calculation. In a Nov. 16, 2025 written submission, the SEC Crypto Task Force said: “The SEC should require qualified custodians of digital assets to adopt formal, written succession policies addressing death or incapacity of asset holders, including evidentiary standards, asset transfer procedures, and safeguards against unauthorized claims.” That recommendation describes a policy direction, not a guarantee that every custodian already follows one uniform standard.
A decision framework for owners
Choose self-custody when these conditions are true
- You can maintain redundant, protected backups and keep them confidential.
- A trusted executor can follow technical instructions without improvising.
- You accept responsibility for loss, damage, exposure, and configuration errors.
- Your estate plan can lawfully release the required information after death or incapacity.
Choose a custodian when these conditions are true
- Your heirs are unlikely to manage a recovery phrase or hardware device safely.
- Your family prefers institutional identity and authority checks over technical recovery.
- You are prepared to maintain current records and satisfy probate or equivalent documentation.
- You have checked the provider’s current deceased-account process, fees, and beneficiary capabilities for your jurisdiction.
Use a hybrid approach when the goals differ
Separate the assets that need long-term offline control from the liquidity that heirs may need to access through a familiar institution. Write one coordinated plan, then test both routes with the people who will actually administer the estate.
What heirs should do first
- Secure the deceased person’s devices, papers, and computers without attempting random wallet guesses or entering a phrase into a website.
- Locate the estate instructions and determine whether the assets are self-custodied, held by an exchange, or split between both.
- For self-custody, follow the documented recovery procedure on a clean, trusted device and verify receiving addresses before any transfer.
- For an exchange, open the provider’s official deceased-account process and submit only the requested legal and identity documents.
- Keep an audit trail of access, valuations, transfers, and professional advice for the estate’s records.
The central choice is not simply “device versus exchange.” It is whether your estate will rely on a carefully protected secret and a trained person, or on a custodian’s documented authority review. Pick the route your family can execute correctly, then write and test the plan while you can still fix its weak points.
