Hard Disk Specifications Explained: What Each Number and Label Means

A practical guide to reading HDD specifications and checking compatibility before choosing a drive for a computer, NAS, server or enclosure.

Hard disk specifications describe a drive’s capacity, physical fit, connection, recording format, workload class and performance. They are not a single measure of quality. To choose or replace a drive, check that it fits the device and is supported first; then compare the specifications that matter for how you will use it.

What are hard disk specifications?

Hard disk specifications are the model-specific details in a product listing or manufacturer data sheet. They tell you what a drive can store, how it connects, which systems and workloads it is intended for, and how its performance and operating limits are described.

A specification belongs to a particular model or product family, not necessarily every drive from the same manufacturer. For example, Toshiba lists its MG09 family with SATA or SAS interface versions and with either 512e or 4Kn sector technology. Check the exact model number and its documentation rather than assuming that a family-wide label applies to every version. Toshiba MG09 Series specifications

Which specifications determine whether a drive will fit?

Form factor and dimensions

Form factor describes a drive’s physical size category; dimensions and mounting details determine whether it fits the bay. Consumer listings commonly distinguish 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives. Enterprise products may use the labels small form factor (SFF) and large form factor (LFF). The drive must fit the device’s bay, and some systems require a particular carrier, tray or mounting hardware. Check the computer, NAS, server or enclosure documentation for the exact supported drive size and installation requirements. HPE’s drive portfolio and Toshiba’s MG09 specifications illustrate that manufacturers identify physical categories for specific products. HPE Hard Disk Drives QuickSpecs

Interface: SATA or SAS

The interface is the connection standard between the drive and the host controller. SATA and SAS are distinct interfaces; the host’s controller and bay must support the drive’s interface. A drive’s capacity or physical fit does not establish that it will connect or work in a particular system. Toshiba specifies MG09 versions with SATA 6.0 Gbit/s or SAS 12.0 Gbit/s, while HPE’s portfolio includes both interface types. Those interface rates describe signaling, not the drive’s sustained data-transfer speed. Toshiba MG09 Series specifications

Sector format

Sector format describes how data is organized into sectors on the drive. Listings may specify 512-byte sectors, 512e or 4Kn. These formats are not automatically interchangeable for every host: confirm that the operating system, controller and any storage software support the exact drive format, particularly in older systems. Toshiba lists MG09 models with 512e or 4Kn technology and DT02 models with 512e. Toshiba MG09 Series specifications Toshiba DT02 Series specifications

Capacity and device limits

Capacity is the maker’s stated storage amount for a model. Before buying, check both the capacity you need and the maximum capacity supported by the host. Advertised capacity, formatted capacity and the space reported by an operating system need not be identical; the amount available for files can also depend on formatting and system use. There is no single usable-capacity conversion that applies to every drive and host, so rely on the exact model and device documentation rather than treating the advertised figure as a guaranteed amount of free space.

What do the performance specifications mean?

Rotational speed (RPM)

RPM means revolutions per minute: how fast the drive’s platters rotate. Manufacturer listings include different speeds for different product categories. HPE examples include 7,200 RPM and 10,000 RPM drives; Toshiba lists 5,400 RPM for DT02 and 7,200 RPM for MG09 and X300. RPM is one characteristic, not a complete measure of real-world performance. Throughput, IOPS and latency

These terms describe different aspects of performance:

  • Throughput is the amount of data transferred over time. Sequential throughput is relevant to tasks such as moving or reading large, contiguous files.
  • IOPS means input/output operations per second. Random IOPS can help describe performance when a workload makes many smaller accesses in different locations.
  • Latency is the time taken for an individual request to be served. It can matter in workloads that depend on frequent, responsive reads or writes.

Compare measurements that match the intended workload, and keep any published result attached to its exact model and test conditions. The available manufacturer examples are not a uniform cross-brand benchmark, so they do not establish a general ranking of drive performance. In particular, do not treat an interface’s signaling rate as sustained media throughput. HPE’s QuickSpecs give performance examples for particular products, not a universal result for all HDDs. Cache or buffer

Cache, sometimes called buffer, is temporary onboard memory specified in some drive listings. It can be one useful detail when comparing models, but cache capacity alone does not tell you how fast a drive will be for your workload. Seagate’s Desktop HDD specifications show cache as one of the product fields alongside other model information. Seagate Desktop HDD specifications

What do recording technology and workload labels tell you?

CMR and SMR

CMR and SMR are different magnetic recording methods. Check the recording method of the exact model, especially if your use involves frequent writes or storage-array rebuilds; the method can affect how a drive behaves under those workloads. Do not infer the method from a brand name or assume every model in a product line uses the same one. Toshiba identifies MG09 as CMR and DT02 as drive-managed SMR. Product class and workload rating

Some drives are designed or rated for particular usage patterns. HPE groups products into mission-critical, business-critical and entry classes, with product-specific workload levels and usage descriptions. Toshiba lists a workload rating for MG09. Treat these as manufacturer- and model-specific guidance, then compare the rating and stated use case with your actual workload. A category label is not a guarantee that the drive is suitable for every system or application. HPE Hard Disk Drives QuickSpecs Toshiba MG09 Series specifications

Usage categories can include desktop computing, surveillance, network-attached storage (NAS), backup or archiving, and enterprise servers. Match the drive to the manufacturer’s intended use and rating rather than choosing by capacity alone.

Which operating and ownership specifications should you check?

  • Power: Relevant to systems with several drives, limited power budgets or continuous operation. Compare figures for the exact model and note the operating condition they describe.
  • Noise: Worth considering for a quiet desktop or other noise-sensitive installation; published measurements may depend on the test conditions.
  • Temperature: Check the maker’s operating limits against the enclosure and the environment where the drive will run.
  • Warranty: Read the stated terms for the specific product and sales region. Warranty duration and coverage are not the same as a prediction of drive life.
  • Reliability metrics: Manufacturers may publish metrics such as MTBF or MTTF. These are not promises that an individual drive will last for the stated number of hours; interpret them in the context and conditions given by the manufacturer.

HPE publishes power and warranty information for products in its portfolio, while Toshiba’s X300 specifications include model-specific information. Do not transfer a figure from one drive to another. HPE Hard Disk Drives QuickSpecs Toshiba X300 HDD specifications

How should you compare two hard drives?

Use this order so a strong score on one attribute does not distract from a mismatch elsewhere:

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check the exact device model’s documentation for supported physical dimensions, interface, sector format, maximum drive capacity and any required carrier or mounting parts.
  2. Match the workload. Check the manufacturer’s intended use, workload rating and recording method where relevant. A desktop-oriented drive and a drive specified for enterprise use are not interchangeable just because both fit the bay.
  3. Choose capacity. Allow for the space your files and system need, and confirm the host supports the selected capacity. Do not equate the advertised figure with guaranteed free space after formatting.
  4. Compare task-relevant performance. For large file transfers, look for sequential throughput; for mixed or frequent small accesses, consider random IOPS and latency where published. Treat RPM and cache as individual specifications, not substitutes for workload-relevant performance information.
  5. Check practical constraints. Consider power, noise, temperature limits, warranty and manufacturer reliability metrics if they matter for the installation, keeping each figure tied to the specific model and stated conditions.

HPE’s portfolio shows why the model and class matter: its listed enterprise products differ in workload category, speed, form factor, capacity and warranty. A portfolio maximum or example describes those products, not a universal limit for all hard drives. HPE Hard Disk Drives QuickSpecs

What should you verify before buying a replacement?

  • Record the computer, NAS, server or enclosure’s exact model and consult its storage documentation.
  • Confirm the drive’s physical form factor and bay or carrier requirements.
  • Match the interface to the host controller and supported bay.
  • Check sector-format support and any device capacity limits.
  • Confirm the drive’s workload category and recording method suit the intended use.
  • Compare relevant performance and operating specifications for the exact drive model, not just the product family.
