The Fitbit Ace LTE is less a conventional fitness tracker than a connected kids’ watch built around calling, messaging, location sharing, activity, and games. In our May 2024 hands-on, its standout quality was how completely Google tied together the watch, Fitbit Ace app, child accounts, Ace Pass, and playful software—not how many general-purpose smartwatch features it offered.
That integrated experience comes with significant limits: Ace Pass is required for core connected features, the watch is officially limited to the United States except Alaska and US territories, and it cannot call emergency services. Here’s what the launch experience showed, and what families should know about the product’s current requirements and trade-offs.

What makes the Ace LTE feel like a complete Google launch
The Ace LTE is designed around a supervised child account, a parent-facing Fitbit Ace app, approved contacts, location sharing, School Time, and activity goals linked to games and rewards. It is not simply a smaller adult Fitbit or a general-purpose Wear OS watch with restrictions added afterward: the hardware, software, subscription, and parent controls are intended to work as one curated system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat coherence is the point of the “complete” launch framing. It does not mean the Ace LTE is a complete smartwatch. Its capabilities are deliberately narrower than those of an adult watch or phone, and families depend on Google’s accounts, app, service, and policies to use many of its headline features.

Games make activity part of the interface
In the 2024 hands-on, the game layer was the Ace LTE’s most distinctive feature. Fitbit Arcade games use wrist movement and the watch’s motion-sensing hardware; the review demonstrated fishing and kart-style play controlled with gestures rather than only touchscreen taps. Those are launch-review observations, not a claim that every game or screen remains unchanged.
Children can earn activity rewards, including Arcade tickets, and build up an eejie—a virtual character with a customizable room and items. Ace Bands can unlock additional digital items and themes, giving the physical bands a role somewhat like content cartridges. New game content requires Wi-Fi to download, so LTE does not mean every update or game download happens over cellular service.
Turning movement into a game may appeal to children who enjoy characters and rewards; it may feel distracting or overly game-like to others. Google said it worked with experts in child psychology, public health, privacy, and digital wellbeing, but that design intent is not evidence that the watch improves children’s health. Parents should treat the rewards as one possible motivator, not a substitute for guidance or a measure of medical wellbeing.
What children and parents can do
Calling, messaging, and contacts
With Ace Pass active, children can call and message parents and approved contacts. Google’s current support information allows up to 20 trusted contacts. Calls can work without a caregiver’s phone nearby when LTE is active, but text-message syncing requires the phone to be online. Contacts generally need the Fitbit Ace app, and children cannot freely contact arbitrary phone numbers.
Important safety limit: The Ace LTE cannot call emergency services. Google also says it cannot call another Ace LTE or a phone without the Fitbit Ace app installed. Do not treat it as a replacement for a phone capable of emergency calling.

- Kids smartwatch sends messages and tracks their location to help encourage an active lifestyle while offering parents peace of mind (active subscription and LTE connectivity required)
- Durable, swim-friendly smartwatch features a bright color touchscreen display and up to 2 days of battery life between charges (connected feature usage and LTE network conditions will significantly impact battery life)
- Easily stay in contact with your child via text and voice messaging from the Garmin Jr. app on your compatible smartphone to the Bounce smartwatch and from Bounce to the Garmin Jr. app (active subscription and LTE connectivity required)
- Real-time location tracking lets you check in on your child’s whereabouts through the Garmin Jr. app on your compatible smartphone and even receive notifications when your child enters or leaves parent-defined boundaries (active subscription and LTE connectivity required)
- For added peace of mind, the Assistance feature lets your child quickly trigger a message with their live location to their family contacts (requires setup and your child to be in an area with network coverage where data connectivity is available)
Location and parent controls
The watch uses GPS/GNSS with Google Location Accuracy, while LTE can let parents retrieve location when the watch is away from a paired phone or home Wi-Fi. The watch must be powered on, recently active, and connected to the internet; location is not guaranteed in every place or network condition. Airplane mode disables location sharing, and roaming is not included.
Parents manage approved contacts, communication permissions, location sharing, School Time, the child profile, subscription, and activity views through the Fitbit Ace experience. A child profile can be created during setup or selected from an eligible Google Family group. Some software features have geographic or age-related restrictions; check Google’s current eligibility information rather than assuming every feature is available to every family.
Activity tracking, not adult Fitbit health tracking
The Ace LTE tracks steps, Active Minutes, floors climbed, heart rate, and a daily Move Goal. Google says activity tracking requires an active Ace Pass subscription. The 2024 hands-on noted that it did not offer sleep tracking and was less comprehensive as a fitness tracker than adult Fitbit devices. It is best understood as a connected kids’ watch with activity features, not a comprehensive health or medical device.
Launch interface: a gallery guide
The following navigation details reflect the May 2024 hands-on and may change as the software evolves. Google describes ongoing Seasons that can add content, features, enhancements, and fixes; software updates download automatically over Wi-Fi.
- Swipe down: Quick Settings.
- Swipe up: Notifications.
- Swipe left: The eejie world.
- Swipe right: The eejie, level, tickets, and quests dashboard.
- Upper side button: Calls, messages, and basic fitness information.
- Lower side button: Game carousel.
These launch-era screens help explain the product’s character: the interface places the child’s game world and communication tools alongside activity, rather than presenting a conventional adult fitness dashboard.

This is a major buying constraint, not a footnote: Google lists the Ace LTE and Fitbit Ace app as available in the United States, excluding Alaska and US territories, and the Google Account must be associated with the United States. The phone must run Android 11 or newer or iOS/iPadOS 16 or newer; Android Go is not supported. Initial setup requires Wi-Fi on a 2.4-GHz network, so a 5-GHz-only network will not work.
Ace Pass is required to activate the watch and powers core features such as LTE, calling, messaging, location sharing, and Arcade access. The launch announcement cited a hardware price of about $229–$229.95 and a $9.99 monthly pass, but those are launch figures, not verified current prices. Check Google Store and Ace Pass checkout for the price currently offered. Google’s terms say subscribers are charged the price shown when they purchase and that pricing can change with notice.
Canceling normally stops future renewal rather than refunding the unused part of the current billing period. When the subscription ends, LTE, parental location, calling, messaging, and other Ace Pass features may stop. Confirm the current cancellation terms before subscribing.
Setup and first-use checklist
- Charge the watch and install the Fitbit Ace app on a compatible Android or iPhone.
- Sign in with a Google Account, then choose whether the child or purchaser will wear the watch.
- Create or select the child’s eligible Google/Fitbit profile.
- Select a monthly or annual Ace Pass, complete payment, and provide parental consent where required.
- Keep the phone near the watch with Bluetooth enabled and match the pairing code shown on both devices.
- Connect the watch to supported 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi and allow software updates to finish.
- Set up contacts, location sharing, School Time, goals, watch face, and notifications.
- Before handing it over, test a call, message, and location check; remember that it cannot call emergency services.
Common setup and connection problems
- The app is unavailable: Check that the phone’s App Store or Google Play account is associated with a supported US region.
- The pairing code does not match: Make sure another Ace LTE is not nearby, confirm the selected device name, and restart pairing.
- The watch will not update: Connect to 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi, place it on the charger, and allow up to an hour. Interrupted updates can resume later.
- LTE does not work: Confirm Ace Pass activation, check for signal, turn off airplane mode, and verify regional and network support.
- Location is unavailable: Check that the watch is powered on, recently active, connected to the internet, and location sharing is enabled.
- The subscription was canceled: Core connected features may stop after the current billing period; check the subscription status and applicable terms.
Who should consider the Ace LTE?
| Could be a good fit | Reasons to reconsider |
|---|---|
| A child aged 7 or older; a family in the supported US region; parents seeking controlled communication and location without giving a child a smartphone; a child who enjoys games and digital rewards; a family comfortable with a recurring subscription and Google accounts. | Emergency calling is essential; the family lives outside the supported region or has weak LTE coverage; unrestricted phone numbers, third-party apps, or broad smartwatch functions are needed; a subscription is unwelcome; longer battery life or advanced sleep, wellness, or sports tracking is a priority. |
The central trade-off is control versus openness. Approved contacts and a curated experience may suit parents who want boundaries, but they limit independence. LTE and location add out-of-home utility at recurring cost, while games can make activity engaging for some children and distracting for others. The tightly integrated Google experience is also platform dependence: families rely on Google’s app, accounts, subscriptions, policies, and future software support.

FAQ
Does the Fitbit Ace LTE need a parent’s phone nearby?
A nearby phone is not required for calls when LTE is active, but the watch needs an active Ace Pass and network coverage. Text-message syncing requires the phone to be online, and location retrieval depends on the watch being powered on, recently active, and connected to the internet.
Can the Ace LTE call emergency services?
No. Google says the watch cannot call emergency services. It should not be treated as a replacement for a phone that can make emergency calls.
Does the Ace LTE need a subscription?
Yes. Ace Pass is required to activate the watch and supports core connected features, including LTE, calling, messaging, location sharing, and Arcade access. Check checkout for current pricing.
Where can families use the Ace LTE?
Google lists availability in the United States, excluding Alaska and US territories, and requires a Google Account associated with the United States. Network performance also depends on coverage and local conditions.

Does LTE download games and updates?
No. Google says new game content requires Wi-Fi to download, and watch software updates download over Wi-Fi.
Bottom line
The Fitbit Ace LTE’s strongest idea is a kid-specific system in which supervised contacts, location, activity rewards, games, and parent controls are designed to fit together. That makes it feel unusually coherent, but not unrestricted or comprehensive: Ace Pass is essential to much of the experience, availability is limited, fitness tracking is modest, battery life is finite, and emergency calling is absent.
For a family in a supported area seeking controlled communication and a playful wearable for a child, that combination may be compelling. Before buying, confirm current pricing and coverage, consider whether the subscription and game-oriented approach fit your child, and make a separate plan for emergencies.
