Their platforms, files, dependencies and save-game rules differ. Identify the exact project and your Skyrim edition before downloading anything.
This guide separates those projects, explains what each requires, and gives a cautious installation and removal procedure. If you want a definitive answer for a particular download, provide its full mod name, platform and edition first.

Which Hammerfell project are you trying to install?
“Hammerfell mod” is an ambiguous search phrase. A Nexus file, an Xbox Creation and a Legendary Edition mod may have similar names while being completely different releases. Installing the wrong file can produce missing masters, failed launches, broken quests or a save that cannot be safely continued.
Use the project’s own file page as the authority. Check the platform label, game edition, version, requirements and uninstall notes on that page rather than relying on a video description or a similarly named download.

The dates and versions above identify the listings; they are not independent quality or performance ratings. A later update can change requirements, so recheck the project page immediately before installation.
Supported editions: Special Edition, Legendary Edition and Xbox
Skyrim Special Edition
Bethesda Support states: “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition is the only version of Skyrim that features an in-game menu to access Creations.” That menu is relevant to Xbox Creations and any supported Creation workflow, but it does not make every third-party Nexus mod compatible. A Nexus author can target Special Edition with a mod manager, while an Xbox Creation is delivered through Bethesda’s interface and follows a different file and dependency model.
Do not install an LE archive into Special Edition or an SE archive into Legendary Edition. The executable, data formats, plugins and runtime behavior differ. If a page offers separate SE and LE downloads, select the one matching the game shown in your launcher and mod manager.

Legendary Edition
Hammerfell Imports – Pedlars of Tamriel has a separate Legendary Edition page and lists the three original DLC packages as requirements. Those DLC names are not a general requirement for every Hammerfell project; they apply to that release. An SE user should not substitute Anniversary Edition or Creation Club content for an LE file unless the author explicitly provides an SE conversion.
Xbox Creations
Remnants of Hammerfell is identified as an Xbox Creation. Its requirements are therefore content that must be owned or installed in the Xbox ecosystem, not merely files copied into a PC Data folder. The presence of an Xbox listing does not imply a PC or PlayStation version.

Requirements: verify the exact dependency chain
Requirements are project-specific. Before pressing download, open the file page’s Requirements, description and installation sections and record every mandatory master, DLC, Creation or framework. Optional compatibility patches should be distinguished from hard requirements.
Remnants of Hammerfell
The Xbox listing requires the Redguard Elite Armaments Creation Club content and The Gray Cowl of Nocturnal – 10th Anniversary. Missing either prerequisite can prevent the Creation from loading correctly. The listing also says it works with Gray Cowl of Nocturnal and most quest or content mods, while warning that a patch may be needed for mods that heavily alter the Alik’r Desert worldspace.
Hammerfell Imports
The Legendary Edition release lists Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn. These are full DLC requirements, not interchangeable names for newer Creation Club packages. Confirm that each DLC is enabled in the Legendary Edition installation before troubleshooting the mod itself.
Folkstead and the Border of Hammerfell
The available project summary identifies it as a Special Edition land expansion but does not establish a universal dependency list. Treat the current Requirements section on its file page as authoritative. Large land expansions commonly interact with other worldspace, navmesh and landscape plugins, so load-order guidance and patches on the author’s page matter more than a generic Hammerfell checklist.
Can you add one to an existing save?
There is no blanket “yes” for these projects. Do not promise that a Hammerfell mod is safe to add to an active character unless its author explicitly documents that support. A new-worldspace or quest expansion can place scripts, aliases, objects and quest states into a save. Removing it later may leave those records behind even when the plugin file is gone.

Create a clean backup before installation. Keep at least one untouched save from before the mod was enabled, and do not overwrite that backup while testing. A separate test character is safer for a large worldspace expansion than experimenting on a 200-hour playthrough.

Its troubleshooting guidance is to remove the suspected Creation or Mod completely to confirm whether it is responsible, while retaining unmodded saves for reverting. That advice is a diagnostic procedure, not a guarantee that removal from a live save is harmless.
A safe installation workflow
- Identify the file. Write down the complete project name, platform, edition, author and version. Reject a download if its page does not match your game.
- Check dependencies. Confirm every listed DLC, Creation and required master is installed and enabled before launching the mod.
- Read overlap notes. Look for warnings about the Alik’r Desert, other worldspaces, cities, landscape edits, quest conflicts and required patches.
- Back up saves. Exit the game and copy an unmodded save to a location you will not overwrite. For a substantial expansion, start a disposable test character.
- Install through the intended channel. Use Bethesda’s Creations interface for an Xbox Creation, or the author-supported PC mod manager and archive for a Nexus release. Do not mix the two procedures.
- Verify the load order. Enable required masters first, then the Hammerfell project and any documented patches. Resolve missing-master messages before loading a character.
- Test before committing. Launch the test save, travel near the affected area, enter and exit the new content, and check for missing textures, crashes, dialogue failures and obvious worldspace seams.
If the test fails, disable the new project and return to the untouched save rather than repeatedly loading the affected character.
How to uninstall an Xbox or Special Edition Creation
For a Skyrim Special Edition Creation installed through Bethesda’s Creations menu, use Bethesda’s in-game workflow:
- Launch Skyrim Special Edition and open Creations.
- Open Library and select the Creation.
- Choose Delete. If you are only testing whether it causes a problem, disable it instead of deleting it.
- If Bethesda’s support flow asks you to manage load order, open Load Order, disable the Creation, then use Select Character in the Load menu to choose the original save.
Keep the pre-installation save untouched. Bethesda describes Creations as something you use “at your own risk,” and achievements are disabled when using Creations unless otherwise specified. Deleting a Creation from the library removes its installed content; it does not repair every record already written into a save.

Removing a Nexus or mod-manager installation
Bethesda’s Delete button is not a universal procedure for manually installed Nexus files. In a PC mod manager, follow that manager’s disable, uninstall and deployment process, plus the project author’s instructions. Do not manually delete random files from the Data folder while leaving a plugin active in the load order.
For a mod that warns against removal, stop using the affected save after uninstalling. Alternate Start – Live Another Life provides a clear example of this policy: “No support will be provided for anyone who uninstalls this mod from an active game and continues on with that save.” The same principle is prudent for a large Hammerfell worldspace or quest project even when its page uses different wording.

Worldspace overlap is a different problem from a missing DLC. Two mods can load successfully yet place incompatible landscapes, doors, NPCs or navmeshes in the same coordinates. The Remnants of Hammerfell listing specifically flags heavy changes to the Alik’r Desert and says a patch may be needed. Check every other mod that edits that desert, roads leading into it, exterior cells or related quests.
When a patch exists, install the version matching both parent mods and place it exactly where the patch author specifies. If no patch exists, choose one worldspace overhaul for the affected area rather than assuming load-order changes will merge complex edits safely.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The game reports missing masters
Return to the requirements list. Enable the required DLC or Creation, install the correct edition of the dependency and confirm that your manager is deploying the files. Do not bypass a missing-master warning by forcing the game to launch.

The game crashes or shows a black screen
After confirming the problem began with the new content, disable or remove that Creation or Mod as Bethesda recommends, then load the untouched save. If the issue began after a Skyrim update, check whether the author has released an updated file before reinstalling.
The mod loads but the desert or nearby area is broken
Inspect worldspace-overlap notes and patch requirements. Disable other Alik’r Desert or landscape overhauls temporarily and test on a new character; do not diagnose a heavily modified active save by repeatedly saving over it.
The mod is not visible in the menu
Confirm that you are using Special Edition for the in-game Creations menu. Legendary Edition does not use that interface, and a Nexus installation belongs in the appropriate PC mod-manager workflow.

The safest answer to “Can I install a Hammerfell mod on my current save and remove it later?” is conditional: only the exact author documentation can establish that. Identify the project first, match its edition and dependencies, test from a protected save, and treat removal from an active character as unsafe whenever the author gives no explicit permission.
