For a few small holes in masonry, a hammer drill may be enough if its manual and bit support the material and hole size. For harder concrete, repeated drilling, larger holes, or work that also calls for chiseling, an SDS-plus rotary hammer is usually the more suitable type—provided its stated capacity covers the job. Choose by material, hole dimensions, workload, handling and dust control, not by tool name alone.
How to choose between a hammer drill and a rotary hammer
Start with the job rather than assuming one tool is universally better. Bosch positions SDS-plus rotary hammers for light-to-medium-duty concrete and masonry work, but the capacity of a particular model still matters. A hammer drill can suit occasional, smaller masonry holes when the tool and bit are rated for the material and size.

- Material: Consider whether you are drilling mortar, brick, block, stone or concrete, and how hard or dense it is.
- Hole size and depth: Check the tool maker’s limits for the specific material and bit diameter; do not infer capacity from the tool category.
- Quantity: A few holes and repeated drilling place different demands on the tool and operator.
- Chiseling: If the job includes chipping or light chiseling, look for a rotary hammer with a chiseling mode.
- Handling and dust control: Account for weight, control, access to the work area, and compatible dust-collection equipment.
The available manufacturer and safety guidance does not establish a universal speed, vibration, endurance or price advantage across all hammer drills and rotary hammers. Those comparisons depend on the specific models, bits and conditions.
When a hammer drill is the sensible choice
Choose a hammer drill for occasional, smaller holes when its specifications cover the masonry and hole dimensions. Confirm that the drill is intended for the material, use an appropriate masonry bit, and follow the tool’s instructions. If the job involves many holes, hard concrete or dimensions beyond the drill’s stated capacity, reassess rather than forcing the tool through the work.

When an SDS-plus rotary hammer makes more sense
An SDS-plus rotary hammer is a better fit to consider for harder concrete, repeated drilling, larger holes within the model’s capacity, or jobs that may require chiseling. SDS-plus is a bit-shank system, not a guarantee that every SDS-plus tool can handle every hole: verify the maker’s capacity and operating instructions for the material and diameter.
Rotary-hammer modes
Some rotary hammers provide drilling-only, hammer-drilling and chiseling modes. Bosch’s GBH2-26 is one example; its modes and published specifications apply to that model, not to every rotary hammer. Check the exact model before choosing it for a task.

Easily switch between functions using our two different switches. The double function switch design extends the service life by 100% compared to single function switches
- THOUGHTFUL HUMANIZED DESIGN: For your safety and comfort, we have designed the ENRH3201 with a safety clutch protection to protect your wrist from high torque force. The 360 adjustable handle allows for easy handling in different work scenarios. Our upgraded double layer anti-vibration system effectively reduces vibrations and minimizes fatigue. The PU soft grip handle prevents slipping, ensuring a comfortable and secure grip during use
- DRILLING CAPACITY: The ENRH3201 rotary hammer drill has a maximum drilling diameter of 1.25 inch for concrete and 0.5 inch for metal. With a no-load speed of 820 r/min and a max impact frequency of 4200bpm, our rotary hammer delivers efficient and powerful performance. The sds-plus chuck allows for quick and secure bit changes, ensuring uninterrupted progress on your projects
- SPECIFICATION: The bare machine weight of ENRH3201 rotary hammer is 12.58 Lbs. The dimensions are 15.36 inches L x 10.24 inches W x 4.53 inches H. The total weight includes all accessories is 18.1Lbs. and overall shipping dimensions are 17.32 inches L x 13.46 inches W x 4.96 inches H. You can use it to remove tiles or demolishing brickwork. It is also suitable for masonry, concrete and brick
Match the bit to the chuck and masonry
The shank must fit the tool’s chuck. Bosch describes SDS-plus as a 10 mm shank system and SDS-max as an 18 mm system; the systems are not interchangeable. Do not assume an SDS-plus bit will fit an SDS-max chuck, or vice versa. See Bosch’s SDS-plus and SDS-max overview for its description of the systems.

For cinder block, mortar, common brick, soft stone and similar materials, a Bosch manual directs users to carbide-tipped SDS-plus bits with an SDS-plus rotary hammer. Choose a bit of the right shank and task-appropriate diameter, and follow the manual for the tool and bit. The cited recommendation applies to the manual’s listed materials and equipment; consult your own tool’s instructions for other materials or setups. See the Bosch manuals and downloads.

Plan for silica dust when drilling concrete or masonry
OSHA warns: “The use of handheld and stand-mounted drills, impact and rotary hammer drills, and similar tools used to drill holes in concrete, masonry, or other silica-containing materials can generate respirable crystalline silica dust.” A dust shroud and vacuum collection system may be part of a control method, but compatibility and setup matter.
For the drill controls described in OSHA’s fact sheet, the vacuum system should use a shroud sized and compatible with the manufacturer’s system, airflow at least as high as the manufacturer’s recommendation, a filter rated at 99 percent or greater, and a filter-cleaning mechanism. Operate and maintain the equipment according to its instructions. These criteria do not mean that any shroud-and-vacuum combination automatically controls exposure or meets workplace rules. Read OSHA’s fact sheet on reducing silica dust from drills.

- 3.0 joules impact energy for fast drilling and chipping speed
- 8.5 amp high performance motor
- Shocks - Active Vibration Control reduces vibration felt by the user at the handles. A Perform and Protect feature.
- Rotating brush ring delivers full power/torque in forward and reverse
- Integral clutch reduces sudden, high torque reactions if bit jams
In the United States, OSHA’s construction silica overview says covered employers must limit worker exposures and take other steps. It describes following the standard’s Table 1 control methods or assessing exposure and selecting controls to meet the permissible exposure limit. The appropriate method depends on the work and equipment configuration; requirements also vary by jurisdiction. See OSHA’s construction silica standard overview.
