Start with Android’s built-in battery-use screen: it shows which apps and system functions used battery during the period displayed. On a Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps. Other Android phones may use different names or menu locations, so treat this as the Pixel route rather than a universal path.
Check battery use on a Pixel
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery usage.
- Select View by apps to see app usage for the period shown. Review the highest-use entries and the battery-level chart, which covers the time since the last full charge.
- Tap an app to review its battery controls, including its background-use setting.
The screen can also show battery use by system function. If a system component accounts for the usage, do not assume that uninstalling an ordinary app will fix it; contact your phone manufacturer if the system use seems abnormal.

Find the equivalent screen on other Android phones
Android manufacturers can customize settings, so menu labels and locations vary. Look in Settings for Battery and then a screen named something like Battery usage or App battery usage. If those steps do not match your phone, use the manufacturer’s support instructions for your specific model and Android version.

Interpret the list before changing settings
- Check the period. The ranking reflects the interval shown, not necessarily a long-term pattern.
- Use the ranking as a clue, not a verdict. The first-listed app is not automatically defective; its use may reflect how much you used it during that period.
- Allow for rounding. On Pixel, listed usage amounts may not total 100% because of rounding.
- Distinguish apps from system use. A system-function entry is not the same as an installed app and may need manufacturer-specific troubleshooting.
What to do when an app stands out
Review its background battery setting
On Pixel, Google generally recommends leaving battery optimization enabled. Review the app’s battery settings and restrict background use only if appropriate for how you use it. Adaptive Battery learns from usage and can reduce background activity for apps you use less often; as a trade-off, notifications may arrive later or performance may be reduced.

Avoid force-stopping essential services
Force stop is not available for every app, and stopping essential services can make the phone work incorrectly. Google Play services, for example, cannot be force-stopped or uninstalled on Pixel. Do not use force stop indiscriminately on system components.
Check for causes beyond a particular app
- Recent setup or reset: Pixel battery optimization may take a few weeks to fully adapt after setup or a reset.
- Recent software update: Somewhat higher drain for a few days can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software.
- Heat: A hot phone can lose battery faster even when it is not being used. Heat alone does not identify an app as the cause.
If fast drain continues, restart the phone and check for Android and app updates. For a persistent app-specific problem, contact the app developer; for abnormal system or device behavior, contact the phone manufacturer.
