Choose Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) if you want to play Halo on a Windows PC now. It is an official PC collection sold through Steam and the Microsoft Store, and it is included with PC Game Pass. Halo 5: Reforged is an unofficial community project with no public playable release and no announced release date. It aims to recreate the complete Halo 5 experience, but its current development builds are not a finished, publicly downloadable game.

MCC is the practical choice for a supported purchase, a reliable installation and a playable Halo campaign today. Reforged is relevant only if you want to follow an unfinished fan project and understand that access, features and timing are uncertain.

What Halo 5: Reforged actually is
Halo 5: Reforged is not a PC edition published by Microsoft. It is an unofficial, community-built effort intended to bring Halo 5: Guardians to Windows. Its stated scope is unusually broad: the team is working toward the campaign, campaign co-op, competitive multiplayer, Warzone, Forge and Spartan customization rather than a small fan-made mission or visual mod.
That target should not be confused with a released product. The project FAQ currently states, in direct terms, “No public playable release or announced release date.” Development builds are not the same thing as a public release. A developer may be able to demonstrate a feature internally or to invited testers while ordinary PC players still have no supported download or installation path.

Current campaign progress
The project reports that all 15 Halo 5 campaign missions load into gameplay in development builds. Osiris has been played from beginning to end on all four difficulty levels. That is meaningful technical progress, but it is not a claim that every mission is complete or stable for public use. Broader work on completion, rendering, checkpoints and transitions remains in progress.
Two-player campaign co-op has worked over the internet on a separate dedicated server. Reliable checkpoints and complete four-player fireteams are still unfinished or planned. A successful two-player development session therefore does not establish that a normal four-person group can install the project, retain progress and finish a campaign without errors.
Current multiplayer and Warzone progress
Multiplayer and Warzone are also active development areas. Custom Games have early bot matches, and local tests have reached 31 bots. Arena playlists and matchmaking remain planned rather than publicly available services.

All eight Firefight maps have passed specified local checks, but the project still lists complete coverage, online group testing, REQ use, lighting and transitions as work in progress. These details matter because a map loading in a local test is a narrower milestone than a finished online mode with complete progression, effects and network stability.
Is Halo 5 on PC through MCC?
No. MCC does not include Halo 5: Guardians. Its PC collection contains six named games: Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST Campaign and Halo 4. Halo 5 is a separate game, so installing MCC will not give you the Halo 5 campaign, Warzone or Forge.

MCC is still the official way to play a large portion of the pre-Halo 5 series on Windows. The collection combines the six listed campaigns with established multiplayer content and PC-specific features. If your priority is a supported Halo package rather than that single missing entry, MCC supplies substantially more immediately playable material than waiting for Reforged.
How to get MCC on a Windows PC
Steam
- Open Steam and search for Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
- Purchase and install the collection, then launch it from your Steam library.
- Sign in with an Xbox network account when prompted. Halo Support says this account is required for online play on every platform that offers MCC.
- Select the campaigns or multiplayer components you want to install from the collection interface and allow updates to finish before starting an online session.
On Steam, an Xbox network account is required for online play, but an active Xbox Live Gold subscription is not. The Steam route is therefore a one-time PC purchase plus the account needed for online services.

- Open the Microsoft Store app in Windows and locate Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
- Buy the PC edition, or install it if your account already owns it.
- Launch MCC and sign in with the Xbox network account you intend to use for achievements and online play.
- Use the in-game installation controls to select the games and modes you need.
The Microsoft Store route uses the official PC distribution channel and the same Xbox network account requirement for online play.
PC Game Pass
- Open the Xbox app for Windows and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your PC Game Pass subscription.
- Find Halo: The Master Chief Collection and choose Install.
- Launch MCC through the Xbox app, then complete the Xbox network sign-in if requested.
- Keep the qualifying subscription active while you use the subscription version.
Microsoft’s PC access information says the PC Game Pass version includes Halo: Reach and Halo 3: ODST within MCC. Because Game Pass is a subscription route, access depends on an active qualifying subscription rather than permanent ownership of the collection.
What you would need for Reforged
There is currently no normal public installer to download. The Reforged project says users must supply Halo 5 files from copies they are lawfully entitled to access. It does not distribute Microsoft-owned executables, libraries, maps, textures, models, audio, keys, credentials or other proprietary data.

That arrangement creates several practical limits:
- You cannot treat a Reforged download as a replacement for buying or owning Halo 5 content.
- You should not download unofficial packages that claim to contain Microsoft’s game files, keys or credentials.
- The project may require Microsoft or Xbox authentication and entitlement verification if and when a future release is made.
- Because there is no announced public release date, you cannot plan a reliable installation, storage requirement or launch schedule around it.
The project’s free, non-commercial status also means Reforged is not a product you can purchase today. It does not sell builds or paid early access. Any site offering a paid “Reforged release” is not established as an official project distribution channel by the information available here.

If your specific goal is to play Halo 5’s story on a PC, Reforged is the only project in this comparison aimed at that campaign. However, it is not currently a playable public substitute. MCC is the answer if you want an official campaign you can install now, but it cannot satisfy the narrower request for Halo 5 itself.
Multiplayer, Warzone and cross-platform play
Reforged’s online model
Reforged online work uses community services. The project has not announced compatibility with official Xbox Live matchmaking or with Xbox players. Early Custom Game bot tests and two-player co-op demonstrations show development progress, not a finished matchmaking network.
A future public build could also impose authentication or entitlement checks. Until the project announces its release architecture, it is not possible to promise server availability, account compatibility, crossplay, ranked playlists or persistent progression.
MCC’s online model
MCC is integrated with the Xbox network. Halo Support states: “You need an Xbox network account to play online on any platform that offers Halo: The Master Chief Collection.” This requirement applies even when the game is installed through Steam.

The PC listing advertises online player-versus-player, online co-op, LAN play, cross-platform multiplayer, achievements and Workshop support. The listing establishes that cross-platform multiplayer is a supported PC feature, but the available material does not specify that every playlist, input type or mode uses the same cross-play rules. If you need to play with a particular Xbox friend, check the current in-game matchmaking and account requirements for the mode you plan to use.
For Steam owners, no active Xbox Live Gold subscription is required. For PC Game Pass users, the subscription itself must remain active. In both cases, the Xbox network account is separate from the question of whether you bought the game on Steam or obtained it through a subscription.
Graphics and performance expectations
The Steam listing advertises MCC on PC with optimization up to 4K UHD and 60-plus frames per second, along with PC controls and other platform features. “Up to” describes the advertised capability, not a guaranteed frame rate on every computer. Actual results depend on the hardware, resolution, graphics settings, drivers and the particular game being played.
No independent benchmark directly comparing Reforged with MCC is established here. Reforged’s development status makes a conventional performance comparison especially unreliable: rendering, checkpoints, transitions, lighting, networking and content completeness are still changing. Treat claims about Reforged frame rates, minimum specifications, stability or superiority as unverified unless the project publishes a reproducible release build and specifications.

Which one should you choose?
Choose MCC if you want to play this week
- You need an official, publicly downloadable PC game.
- You want several complete campaigns instead of waiting for one unfinished project.
- You need documented storefront access through Steam, the Microsoft Store or PC Game Pass.
- You want supported online co-op, competitive multiplayer, LAN play and advertised cross-platform multiplayer.
- You prefer a known account and entitlement model rather than supplying extracted files to a community project.
Follow Reforged if you are specifically interested in Halo 5’s future PC recreation
- You understand that there is no public playable release or announced release date.
- You are comfortable monitoring development milestones rather than planning a normal purchase and installation.
- You can lawfully access the Halo 5 files the project may require.
- You accept that campaign completion, checkpoints, four-player co-op, matchmaking, Warzone systems and Firefight integration are not all finished.
- You do not expect official Xbox Live matchmaking or Xbox-player crossplay to work unless the project announces it.
Do not use Reforged as a reason to skip MCC
Reforged and MCC are not two currently purchasable PC editions competing on equal terms. One is an unfinished community project with no public release; the other is an official collection available through three documented PC routes. You can own MCC now and still follow Reforged separately. Buying MCC does not grant Halo 5, but waiting for Reforged leaves you without a supported way to play the other six games on PC.

“Is Halo 5 on PC?”
There is no public official Halo 5 PC release identified here. Reforged is an unofficial project aiming to bring the game to Windows, but it has no public playable release or announced date.
“Can I play the Halo 5 campaign on PC?”
Not through MCC. Reforged’s development builds have loaded all 15 missions and tested Osiris from start to finish, but those builds are not a public game you can install today.
“Does MCC include Halo 5?”

MCC is the clear recommendation for anyone who wants to install and play Halo on Windows now. It offers six named Halo games, official storefront support, online services and PC features documented by Microsoft and the current Steam listing. It does not include Halo 5.
Halo 5: Reforged is best understood as a work-in-progress community effort, not a released alternative. Its reported milestones—including all 15 campaign missions loading in development builds, two-player co-op tests and 31-bot Custom Game tests—show ambition and progress, while the absence of a public build, release date, finished co-op structure and announced Xbox network compatibility means no ordinary player can rely on it yet.
