Short answer: Halide’s published feature list offers direct control of shutter speed, ISO, and white balance, plus manual focus and focus aids. Apple’s built-in Camera app usually offers tap-to-focus, exposure adjustment, and AE/AF Lock; Apple also documents direct manual aperture, shutter-speed, and white-balance controls on iPhone 18 Pro models in specified modes. Those iPhone 18 Pro controls are model-specific—not a general feature of every iPhone.
What “manual aperture” means on an iPhone
The word aperture can refer to two different things in iPhone camera discussions. Apple’s Portrait Depth Control adjusts the appearance of background blur. That is a creative depth effect, not evidence that the camera is changing a physical lens opening. Separately, Apple documents manual lens-aperture control on iPhone 18 Pro models. Halide’s official feature page lists shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and focus, but does not list a physical aperture adjustment.

Apple’s manual aperture instructions are for iPhone 18 Pro models and cover Photo, Video, Cinematic, Slo-mo, and Time-Lapse. Do not assume the same controls exist on another iPhone, or in every camera mode. Apple also notes that available tools vary by model and mode. What the built-in Camera app can do on other iPhones
Apple describes automatic focus and exposure as the camera’s starting behavior. You can tap a subject to place focus, adjust exposure, and hold on the screen for AE/AF Lock. These are useful controls, but they do not amount to the same thing as direct manual shutter and ISO settings. The exact controls and whether settings can be preserved depend on the iPhone model, camera mode, and software.

Which app fits the control you want?
- You want direct shutter speed, ISO, and white balance controls: Halide’s official feature page lists these controls in its manual mode.
- You want manual focus and aids for judging focus: Halide lists gesture-based focus, focus peaking, and a focus loupe. Apple documents manual focus distance for iPhone 18 Pro in supported modes.
- You mainly need to choose a focus point, adjust exposure, or lock focus and exposure: Start with the built-in Camera app’s tap, exposure, and AE/AF Lock controls.
- You have an iPhone 18 Pro and want to set lens aperture, shutter speed, and white balance in Apple’s app: Apple documents those controls in Photo, Video, Cinematic, Slo-mo, and Time-Lapse. Check the guide for current mode details.
- You mean the Portrait blur slider: That is Depth Control, not a substitute for a manual lens-aperture setting.
Halide describes its controls as “total control over shutter speed, ISO and white balance”; that is the vendor’s feature claim, not an independent test. Its official page also describes a free one-week trial at signup, but trial terms can change. Check Halide’s current product page for the latest details.
