How to Read PSX Company Financial Statements Before Investing

A practical guide to finding and interpreting PSX company financial statements, from the balance sheet and cash flows to notes, ratios and sector comparisons.

To read a Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) company’s financial statements before investing, start with its latest filing on the PSX website, confirm the period and whether the figures are consolidated, then read the statement of financial position, profit or loss, cash flows and changes in equity together. Follow important amounts into the notes, review the auditor’s and directors’ reports, and compare several periods with similar companies in the same sector. The aim is to understand performance, cash generation and risk—not to treat one ratio as a buy-or-sell verdict.

Where to find the right PSX financial statements

Use the PSX financial reports repository to search for an issuer’s available annual and quarterly filings. Check for reports or announcements filed after the period you are studying; the repository’s latest dates change as companies submit reports. A third-party ratio page may be convenient, but the company filing is the primary source for checking the underlying figures and disclosures.

Before comparing numbers, note the reporting period and fiscal year end, currency and units, and whether the report is annual, quarterly or half-year. Check whether it presents consolidated group accounts or unconsolidated accounts for the parent company. Use consolidated statements to assess the group, and parent-only statements when that is the entity whose financial position matters to your question. Do not compare figures with different periods or scopes as though they were equivalent.

SECP’s annual audited accounts guidance describes the annual filing package and quarterly transmission timings under section 237 of the Companies Act 2017: 30 days after the first and third quarters and 60 days after the second quarter. Filing rules may be amended, so check current SECP materials rather than relying on those timings as a permanent rule.

What each financial statement tells you

SECP’s Guide on Financial Statements, last updated on 19 February 2025, is a local regulator resource for understanding company reports. Read the statements as a connected set: one shows the company’s position at a date, another its performance over a period, and another how cash moved.

Statement of financial position: resources and obligations

Often called the balance sheet, this is a snapshot at the reporting date. It shows assets, liabilities and equity. Ask what is driving receivables and inventory, whether reported cash is available for general use, and how much debt falls due soon versus later. Look at how equity changed: retained earnings, a new share issue, revaluation reserves and other movements have different implications. Whether working capital is adequate depends on the company’s business model and cash cycle.

Statement of profit or loss: performance during the period

Track revenue, gross and operating profit where presented, finance costs, tax, and profit attributable to owners. Compare the period with the matching period a year earlier, as well as with the full-year history; a quarter alone may not reveal a seasonal pattern. Where the notes allow, separate recurring operating results from unusual gains or losses such as disposals, revaluations or foreign-exchange movements.

Statement of cash flows: where cash came from and went

Separate operating, investing and financing cash flows. Check whether operations generate cash over time, how capital expenditure or acquisitions are funded, and whether recurring cash generation appears sufficient to support dividends or debt repayments. Profit and operating cash flow can diverge because profit uses accrual accounting and includes non-cash items. Working-capital changes, including receivables and inventory, may help explain the gap. A divergence is a reason to investigate the notes and cash-flow details, not proof of wrongdoing.

Statement of changes in equity: how owners’ funds moved

Use this statement to trace retained earnings, dividends, share issues, reserves and other comprehensive income. It helps explain movements in equity that current-period profit alone does not account for.

Check the report’s basis-of-preparation note for the accounting framework applied. Pakistan’s standards are subject to SECP notification under the Companies Act 2017; do not assume that every IFRS standard has the same local status or effective date. The IFRS Foundation’s Pakistan jurisdiction page provides background on SECP’s role. For a particular company, rely on its stated reporting basis and applicable current SECP notifications.

How to read the notes and accompanying reports

The statements show headline amounts; the notes explain how to interpret them. Follow material or changing captions into the notes for accounting policies and estimates, breakdowns, debt terms and maturities, contingent liabilities, related parties, segment results, taxation and events after the reporting period. Compare policies and estimates with earlier reports, and understand any restated comparative figures before calculating growth.

Also review the annual filing’s accompanying reports. SECP describes the audited package as including an auditor’s report, directors’ report, chairman review report and statement of compliance. Read the auditor’s opinion and any qualification or emphasis language carefully. The directors’ and chairman’s reports can add context to operating results and risks; the compliance statement addresses governance requirements. These materials complement the numbers rather than replace them.

How to compare performance, cash quality and balance-sheet risk

Build a simple history covering multiple periods. Include revenue, operating and net profit, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, debt, cash, equity and shares outstanding. Examine both absolute amounts and margins or per-share figures, and account for share splits, bonus issues, rights issues or other changes in share count before interpreting trends.

PSX’s Guide to Investors defines basic share metrics as follows:

  • EPS (earnings per share): net profit after tax divided by outstanding shares.
  • P/E (price-to-earnings ratio): current share price divided by EPS.
  • Dividend yield: cash dividend divided by share price.

These are starting points, not conclusions. Check the inputs and their period: a share price is market data at a particular time, while EPS comes from reported accounts and may be affected by unusual items or share-count changes. Compare a company’s ratio trend with its own history and relevant peers rather than treating a single reading as evidence that a share is cheap, expensive or safe.

Investigate patterns such as earnings growth without corresponding cash generation, rising receivables or inventory, declining margins, repeated equity issuance, refinancing needs or material audit concerns. Each can have a legitimate explanation; trace it to the relevant disclosure before drawing a conclusion.

How to compare PSX companies fairly

Choose peers with similar business activities, reporting periods and capital intensity. Compare sales and margin trends, leverage and interest burden, liquidity, operating cash conversion, dividend history, earnings per share, and valuation against sustainable earnings. Ratios can be distorted by one-off gains, negative earnings, cyclicality, inflation, foreign-exchange changes, capital structure and accounting differences.

Sector context matters. PSX advises investors to study company statements alongside developments in the relevant sector or industry. PSX’s investor resources provide that guidance. Bank and insurer metrics do not map neatly to the working-capital or debt ratios commonly used for non-financial companies; use relevant sector measures and explain what they capture.

What to check before investing in an IPO

For a new listing, read the prospectus as well as any available company reports. PSX’s investor guide recommends reviewing the issuer’s risk factors, financial information, use of proceeds, outstanding litigation or defaults, business overview and promoter background. These disclosures help assess what the company plans to do with the funds and what could affect the investment.

A practical reading checklist

  1. Find the latest available report and subsequent announcements in the PSX financial reports repository.
  2. Record the reporting period, fiscal year end, currency, units and whether the accounts are consolidated or unconsolidated.
  3. Read the statement of financial position, profit or loss, cash flows and changes in equity together.
  4. Follow material amounts and changes into the notes; check accounting policies, restatements, debt, contingencies, related parties and subsequent events.
  5. Review the auditor’s opinion and the accompanying directors’, chairman’s and compliance reports.
  6. Compare several periods, investigate differences between profit and cash, and account for share-count changes.
  7. Compare with genuinely similar companies and sector conditions before using ratios to put valuation in context.

This method is educational, not company-specific investment advice. Financial statements can help you ask better questions, but they cannot by themselves establish whether a security suits your circumstances.
