To connect a new TCL TV, first identify whether it runs Roku TV or Google TV: their setup prompts and Wi-Fi menus differ. Have your Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password ready, then follow the matching steps below and confirm the TV reports that it is connected.
Before you begin: identify the TV platform
Check the home screen or the labels in the setup prompts to see whether your TCL TV uses Roku TV or Google TV. The directions below cover those two platforms. TCL also sells TVs with other platforms; if neither set of menu labels matches your screen, follow the prompts on the TV and consult the manual for your exact model. Menus can vary by model and software version. TCL Roku TV setup and TCL Google TV setup provide platform-specific guidance.

Before starting, make sure your router is on and note the Wi-Fi network name and password. Passwords are case-sensitive, so enter capital letters, numbers, and symbols exactly as set on your router.

Roku TV
Turn on the TV, choose a language, and select Set up for home use if that option appears. Home mode provides energy-saving options and access to TV features; Store mode is intended for retail display and may limit features. Continue through the guided setup. Depending on the model, it may scan for wireless networks or ask which type of internet connection to use. TCL’s Roku TV setup instructions describe these prompts.

Google TV
Follow the prompts shown during initial setup. You may be asked to connect to Wi-Fi and, depending on the setup path and features you choose, sign in to a Google account. Account sign-in is a Google TV setup and personalization step; it is separate from joining the Wi-Fi network.
Connect the TV to your home Wi-Fi
Roku TV menu path
- Press Home on the remote.
- Open Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless.
- Select your home Wi-Fi network, enter its password, and choose Connect or follow the on-screen prompts.
If your network does not appear, choose Scan again if available. If the network is hidden, Roku setup may offer a private-network option for entering its details. See TCL’s Roku TV network instructions.

Google TV menu path
- Open Settings > Network & Internet. On some models, press the Home button and then the remote’s gear or settings button to get there.
- Make sure Wi-Fi is on and select your home network.
- Enter the password and choose Connect.
Use the labels shown on your particular set if they differ. TCL’s Google TV network guide covers wireless and wired connection options.
Check that the connection works
Look for a Connected status. On Roku TV, open Settings > Network > About to view network details. On Google TV, check the status for the selected network. You can also open a streaming app and play a video as a practical connection test, as TCL suggests in its Google TV network guide.

If the TCL TV will not connect to Wi-Fi
The network name is missing
- Wait for the list to refresh or scan again where that option is available.
- Check that the router is switched on, then temporarily move the TV closer to it to test whether signal strength is the issue. Distance, walls, and metal objects can weaken Wi-Fi.
- If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other band. Which bands are available depends on the router and TV model.
The password is rejected or the TV cannot join
- Check the password carefully, including capitalization and symbols.
- Confirm that another device can connect to the same network.
- Restart the router and TV, then try again.
- On Google TV, you can forget the network and reconnect by selecting it and entering the password again. On Roku TV, run the network check; if needed, use the network connection reset in Roku’s advanced system settings. The TV says connected, but apps do not work
Try another app and check whether another device on the same network can access the internet. If only one app fails, the issue may be specific to that app; if other devices also cannot get online, check the router or internet service. If the basic checks do not resolve the problem, follow the relevant TCL Google TV troubleshooting steps or TCL Roku TV troubleshooting steps.

Use Ethernet if your model has a port
If your exact TV has a built-in LAN/Ethernet port, connect it to the router and select the wired or Ethernet option in network settings if prompted. Check for a connected status afterward. Ethernet is not available on every TCL model, so check the TV itself or its model specifications before buying an Ethernet cable.

Use a phone hotspot when needed
A phone hotspot works like another wireless network: turn it on, then select its name on the TV and enter its password. TCL provides hotspot guidance for Google TV, Roku TV, Fire TV, and Android TV in its mobile-hotspot instructions. Streaming and software updates can use substantial mobile data, and carrier plans may limit hotspot use.
What happens after the TV gets online
TCL says Roku TVs automatically check for and download available software updates after connecting to the internet. Roku setup then continues to activation and Roku account linking. On Google TV, Google account sign-in may be part of the selected setup and personalization path; Roku activation does not apply to all TCL TVs.
