The October 11 Hackaday Links roundup also covers a planned whisky-chemistry CubeSat, a reported change to Nikon’s Small World in Motion results, and animated ASCII art.
What did Artemis II astronauts see near the Moon?
While Orion was about 46,000 miles from the Moon, the crew reported five faint, pinprick-like flashes. NASA says its science team ruled out other sources and confirmed the flashes were caused by rocky fragments hitting the lunar surface. The eclipse conditions helped make the brief events visible. NASA’s account of the observations describes what the crew noticed and documented during the lunar flyby.

The sightings are more than an anecdote: photographs, spoken observations, drawings, and annotations from the crew are available to the science community and public for further study. Direct observations can help researchers understand small lunar impacts and assess potential risks to future infrastructure on the Moon.
A whisky-chemistry experiment planned for orbit
The University of Glasgow announced on October 5, 2026, that researchers from Glasgow and Kyushu Institute of Technology plan to launch a CubeSat in 2028. Its payload is to include 10 ml of fluid and a nanophotonic sensor intended to detect changes in the sample. The planned investigation could continue in orbit for up to five years. The university describes the project as a study of whisky-related chemistry in microgravity.

Why use whisky?
The project treats whisky as a recognizable model for observing biological and chemical processes in microgravity, not simply as a novelty payload. Dr Gilles Bailet of the University of Glasgow’s James Watt School of Engineering said: “Whisky gives us a very recognisable, very well-understood model for studying and monitoring biological and chemical processes in microgravity.” The university says findings could inform future orbital chemistry and pharmaceutical manufacturing; those are potential applications, not results already demonstrated by this planned mission.
Nikon Small World in Motion result reportedly changed
Hackaday reports that Nikon disqualified the winning Small World in Motion entry for use of generative AI, and that the previous runners-up moved up in rank. The Nikon page linked from the roundup could not be independently verified, so this account is limited to Hackaday’s report; further details about the entry, rules, or review process are not established here. Hackaday’s October 11 roundup is the source for the claim.
