A new Apple TV 4K is plausible at Apple’s reported October 13, 2026 “Welcome Home” event, but Apple has not confirmed it is on the agenda. If you’re about to buy one, waiting a few days could clarify your options. If you already own a recent model, there’s no reason to assume it is obsolete: Apple supports both the second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K with tvOS 27.
Is Apple announcing a new Apple TV next week?
Not confirmed. Tom’s Guide and What Hi-Fi? expect a new Apple TV 4K at the reported October 13, 2026 event, but those are media predictions, not an announcement from Apple. The Apple sources reviewed do not confirm Apple TV is on the event agenda, or give a successor’s release date, price or specifications. Tom’s Guide’s event coverage and What Hi-Fi?’s report explain why a refresh is being anticipated; neither makes it official.

What could change—and what remains rumor?
There is no agreed specification to weigh against the current model. Rumor coverage points to a possible chip upgrade, but reports differ: MacRumors discusses an A17 Pro or newer, 9to5Mac describes A17 Pro and Apple’s N1 chip as expected, and What Hi-Fi? mentions an A19 or A19 Pro. These are unconfirmed claims, not a product specification.

Other reported possibilities include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, more memory, Siri-related or AI features, Thread, and a revised remote. MacRumors has collected several of these claims, while coverage elsewhere emphasizes different combinations. Until Apple confirms details, it is not possible to know which features will arrive, which models would support them, or whether they would matter in everyday use. A built-in camera and gesture control should not be treated as expected features. MacRumors says those ideas were discussed in 2024 but found no indication Apple is moving forward with them for this model.
What does the current Apple TV 4K offer?
Apple’s confirmed current model is the third-generation Apple TV 4K, introduced in 2022. It has an A15 Bionic chip and comes in two configurations:

Wait briefly if you’re choosing a new streaming box
If you can postpone your purchase, waiting until after October 13 is a sensible way to find out whether Apple announces a successor. An announcement could give you a new model to consider—or clarify the current model’s value. It does not guarantee that a new device will be available immediately, cost a particular amount, or offer any specific rumored feature.

Buy the current model if its confirmed features meet your needs
If you need a box now and the third-generation model fits your setup, decide on what Apple has actually specified: A15 Bionic, your choice of storage and connectivity, and Thread on the Ethernet configuration. Don’t pay extra or delay based on an unconfirmed chip, wireless standard, Siri feature or remote redesign.
Keep your recent Apple TV 4K if it still does the job
A new model would not, by itself, make your current one unsupported. Apple lists second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K as compatible with tvOS 27; the availability of particular software features can vary by region and hardware. Apple’s tvOS 27 compatibility information identifies supported models.

Apple’s announced tvOS 26 changes also illustrate why a software update and a hardware refresh are different things. In June 2025, Apple described a redesigned Apple TV app, profile display options, FaceTime improvements, changes to Apple Music Sing, and an option to designate an AirPlay speaker as tvOS 26 features arriving in a free fall update. Why a refresh could matter beyond streaming
The “Welcome Home” framing makes the possible update interesting as part of Apple’s home strategy, not just as a faster way to open streaming apps. A new Apple TV could matter if it brings confirmed improvements to wireless connectivity, Thread support, Siri or the remote. But those are precisely the areas where current reports are unsettled. Until Apple explains what the product does—and which existing models get any related software features—the event speculation is not a reason for current owners to replace a working box.
