What remains uncertain is whether Apple will add new hardware to make that platform more useful. A media-reported “Welcome home” event scheduled for October 13, 2026, is an imminent test—not proof that a new home display, HomePod, or Apple TV is coming. Apple’s official pages reviewed as of October 12 do not confirm those rumored products or their specifications.
What Apple has already built for the smart home
Apple Home is more than a promise about future devices. Apple describes HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as home hubs that support away-from-home access and automations. Its Home app page also illustrates controls for lighting, locks, cameras, heating, plugs, and blinds. Those are concrete platform capabilities, though they do not establish how well every accessory works or how complete Apple’s overall offering is.

Apple’s own examples include a Nanoleaf A19 bulb for lighting, a Logitech Circle View Wired Doorbell for security, an ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium with Siri for comfort, and Level Lock+ with Home Key support for entry. A home hub is necessary for remote access and automations, and Apple says users must set one up to add Matter accessories to the Home app. HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs automatically when configured; Apple TV must be added to a room in Home. Apple lists HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as hub options. Apple’s home hub setup requirements

Matter broadens accessory choice across smart-home platforms, but compatibility depends on the accessory’s connection method and the exact hub configuration. Apple Support identifies HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled hub examples. A Thread-enabled Matter accessory needs a Thread-enabled home hub or a supported third-party border router; that requirement should not be generalized to every Apple TV model. Apple’s hub and Thread guidance
Apple says Matter support is included in iOS 16.1 and later. Its developer documentation describes setup by scanning the accessory’s Matter code, after which iPhone provisions it onto Wi-Fi or Thread as appropriate. Apps also need permission to add an accessory to a user’s home. Apple’s Matter developer documentation
What the October 13 event can—and cannot—tell us
Tom’s Guide reported on October 8 that Apple had scheduled an event titled “Welcome home” for October 13, 2026. The report said a smart-home display, a new HomePod, and an Apple TV might appear, presenting them as expectations or rumors rather than confirmed products. Apple’s official materials cited here do not confirm those devices, their names, specifications, or timing. Tom’s Guide’s event report

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
The event is therefore a useful near-term test of Apple’s hardware commitment, but the invitation and rumors alone do not settle the question. The meaningful evidence would be what Apple actually announces, ships, supports, and integrates with the existing Home platform. Any post-event claims require confirmation from Apple; the cited reporting predates the scheduled event.
How to judge whether Apple is serious
For a smart-home platform, commitment is visible in more than a new device announcement. Look at whether the hardware ships, whether it adds a practical role beyond existing hubs, whether it works with the accessories people can actually use, and whether Apple sustains software support. Matter is a positive sign for cross-platform accessory connectivity, but it does not by itself prove that Apple will expand or improve its hardware lineup.
Apple’s September 14, 2026 newsroom update described Home features including related notification grouping and video search. Apple’s footnote says the described features require a home hub, an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, Apple Intelligence enabled in Home, and an eligible iCloud+ plan. Those prerequisites matter: a software feature is only part of the platform’s value if a household meets its eligibility requirements. Apple’s September 2026 announcement

Apple’s June 2025 announcement of tvOS 26 described updates to profiles, Apple Music Sing, FaceTime, and the TV experience, with feature availability varying by language or region and subject to change. That demonstrates continued development of the living-room ecosystem, but it is not evidence on its own of a new smart-home hub. Apple’s tvOS 26 announcement

Should you buy a hub now or wait?
Choose based on what you need today, not on an unconfirmed product. If you want a dedicated smart-home hub and speaker, HomePod mini is a documented option. If you also want Apple TV streaming, Apple TV 4K may serve that role; for Thread accessories, check the exact model and configuration rather than assuming all Apple TV versions have Thread. Either way, confirm the accessory’s Matter or Thread requirements before buying.
If your current setup already meets your needs, waiting until after the reported event can clarify whether Apple announces hardware relevant to you. If you need remote access, automations, or a hub for Matter setup now, Apple’s existing documented options are available to consider. A reader’s question about whether to buy an Apple TV 4K or wait for a rumored Apple home hub captures the choice, but does not establish what Apple will announce. The reader’s HomeKit question
