Microsoft made Windows 11 version 26H2 generally available on September 29, 2026, for eligible devices through a phased rollout. The available Tiny/Nano testing predates 26H2 and does not show that a reduced ISO installs across nearly all PCs that fail Windows 11’s requirements. A smaller image and broad hardware compatibility are separate claims.
What “tiny Windows 11 ISO” means
A reduced or “tiny” ISO is a Windows installation image with some applications or features removed. The Tiny/Nano report cited here describes images generated from an official Windows ISO using a third-party tool; these are not Microsoft’s standard installation media or Microsoft-supported builds. Components can differ between builds, so “Tiny” or “Nano” alone does not specify exactly what an image contains.

In a 2025 report, Tom’s Hardware measured ISO sizes of 5.69 GB for the Microsoft base image, 2.81 GB for Tiny, and 2.14 GB for Nano. These figures came from an earlier test, not a 26H2 release, and the installations were not a controlled comparison: Tiny and Nano were tested in a VirtualBox virtual machine with 8 GB RAM, four cores, and a 40 GB virtual disk, while the full image was tested on a Lenovo X220. The report also described installed disk use of 10.1 GB for Tiny and 8.36 GB for Nano. Neither smaller file size nor lower disk use proves wider hardware compatibility. Tom’s Hardware’s report characterized Nano11 Builder as experimental and not suitable for mission-critical use; the author encountered setup failures and needed an older setup process.
What is confirmed about Windows 11 26H2
Microsoft announced Windows 11 version 26H2, also called the 2026 Update, on September 29, 2026. Its release-health information describes a phased rollout to eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices. Microsoft says those versions and 26H2 share a servicing foundation, so some eligible 24H2 and 25H2 systems receive 26H2 as a small enablement package. That availability does not mean every PC is eligible or that Windows Update will offer 26H2 to an unsupported device. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information for current rollout status.

The 2025 Tiny/Nano test does not establish that a current 26H2-derived image exists, that it installs on 26H2, or that it works across a representative range of unsupported hardware. It provides no 26H2-specific test sample spanning different failed requirements, such as processor eligibility, TPM, Secure Boot, or drivers. Without those results, there is no basis to promise installation on nearly all unsupported PCs.
Why a modified ISO does not make a PC supported
Removing apps or features from an image is not the same as making a computer meet Microsoft’s minimum system requirements. A modified installer may behave differently, but a successful installation would not establish that the device is supported, that its hardware will work correctly, or that future servicing will succeed.

Microsoft says installing Windows 11 on a PC below the minimum requirements is not recommended and may cause compatibility issues. Its support guidance also says such devices are not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates. Microsoft’s installation-media instructions warn that a below-requirements PC “will no longer be supported and won’t be entitled to receive updates.” Those warnings concern unsupported hardware; using a smaller image does not change their scope. See Microsoft’s guidance on devices that do not meet minimum requirements and its Windows 11 download and installation-media page.

| Source | Downloaded through Microsoft’s Windows 11 media workflow. | The 2025 report describes an image produced from an official ISO with a third-party script; it is not a Microsoft-supported build. |
| Included components | Standard Windows installation media; the download page offers x64 and Arm64 options and notes that its Media Creation Tool creates x64 media. | Some apps or features are removed; contents depend on the particular image. The reported Nano installation lacked a web browser by default. |
| Compatibility evidence | Microsoft identifies minimum requirements for supported installation. | The cited test is an earlier, limited experiment—not a broad test of 26H2 or unsupported PCs. |
| Update assurance | Supported eligibility depends on meeting Microsoft’s requirements and the applicable rollout. | Microsoft does not guarantee updates, including security updates, for devices that fail minimum requirements; the cited report does not establish 26H2 update reliability for modified images. |
| Best-evidenced use | Creating standard installation media for eligible PCs. | The report frames the tool as experimental, suitable at most for testbeds or dedicated appliances rather than mission-critical systems. |
If you are considering an installation
For a supported PC
Use Microsoft’s download page and follow its official installation-media workflow. The page specifies a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB for creating media, and warns that creating it deletes the drive’s contents. Back up files from the USB drive before starting. Microsoft’s supported installation guidance is the appropriate route if you need a normal Windows installation with Microsoft’s stated compatibility conditions.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
For a PC that fails requirements
- Check which requirement the PC fails rather than assuming one workaround addresses every issue.
- Do not treat an installer completing as proof that the machine is supported, secure, or assured of future updates.
- Do not rely on a modified image for a work-critical or security-sensitive PC when compatibility and update behavior have not been established.
- If evaluating an experimental image, distinguish a clean install from an upgrade and verify device drivers, essential features, and update behavior on the specific hardware. The available 26H2 evidence does not establish those results for a representative set of unsupported devices.
26H2 support periods are not a guarantee for unsupported PCs
Microsoft lists support durations of 24 months for Windows 11 26H2 Home and Pro and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. These are lifecycle figures for supported editions; they do not guarantee support or updates on hardware that does not meet minimum requirements. See Microsoft’s Home and Pro lifecycle page and its Enterprise and Education lifecycle page.
