Hunter Kowald is the inventor and designer of the SkySurfer, a custom stand-on aircraft that resembles a large drone. Video of Kowald flying it through New York’s Times Square in June 2021 prompted comparisons with Spider-Man’s Green Goblin. Kowald objected to the villain framing, saying, “People are trying to put a little bit more of a dramatic effect too, which I really don’t necessarily like too much. But I like to think that I’m more of a superhero than a villain.”
Who built the Green Goblin-looking hoverboard?
Kowald built the SkySurfer himself. Futurism’s July 6, 2021 interview described him as having a background in mechanical engineering and engineering sciences and as having spent years designing and testing the aircraft. A July 9 follow-up focused on the Times Square video and the Green Goblin comparison.

The nickname came from the machine’s appearance and flight profile, not from evidence that Kowald was performing a fictional character. He said his priority was the engineering: “Pushing this [tech] forward in the right way is definitely the top priority, of course.”

What the SkySurfer actually is
The SkySurfer is better described as a drone-like, stand-on ultralight aircraft than as a conventional consumer hoverboard. The pilot stands on a platform above multiple propulsion units and controls the aircraft while airborne. The reporting does not establish that it is a mass-market board, a self-balancing personal transporter, or a product available through ordinary retail channels.

How Kowald said it was engineered
In the 2021 interview, Kowald said he worked through calculations before construction, used computer-aided design and computer analyses, and built redundancy into critical systems. He described roughly two years on the project, including about eight months working on it full-time; during an intense period he said he sometimes worked 15 to 16 hours a day.
Failures and design risks he described
- An earlier electronics failure caused by condensation.
- Heat and current concerns in the propulsion and electrical systems.
- The possibility of wiring shorting against the carbon-fiber frame.
- Structural-load testing that he said used a 1.5-times safety factor. His example was a structure calculated for a 500-pound load being tested to 750 pounds.
Those figures and methods are Kowald’s interview statements, not independent laboratory results, certification records, or a regulator’s determination that the aircraft is safe.

Is it safe to fly?
There is no independent safety certification established by the July 2021 reporting. Kowald said he treated flight safety as a central engineering and operating problem, but a custom aircraft carrying a person still has obvious consequences if a motor, battery, control system, structure, or power connection fails.

He also discussed checking with cities and working within an emerging regulatory framework influenced in part by rules for paramotorists. That was his description in 2021, not a current legal classification or permission to fly in a particular city.

Why the Times Square flight became a Green Goblin story
The Times Square footage supplied an instantly recognizable visual: a person standing on a compact flying machine among skyscrapers and pedestrians. Online viewers connected that image to the Green Goblin’s glider from Spider-Man. Kowald accepted the superhero association more readily than the villain comparison, which is why the headline’s contrast matters: the viral image was theatrical, while his own account emphasized calculations, testing, operating controls, and incremental development.
Could the SkySurfer rescue people?
Kowald discussed possible uses in lifeguarding, firefighting, disaster response, and film or television production. For a beach rescue, he mentioned concepts such as carrying a chain or an inner tube. He also noted a basic aircraft trade-off: increasing lifting capacity can reduce flight time.

These were proposed applications, not documented deployments. The available 2021 articles do not show the SkySurfer conducting an operational beach rescue, carrying firefighters into a disaster zone, or receiving approval as an emergency-response aircraft. Turning a prototype into a rescue tool would require reliable performance, trained operators, launch and landing procedures, communications, maintenance, and authorization from the relevant authorities.

Can you buy a SkySurfer?
The reporting does not establish a current price, retail listing, production run, certification status, or a way for readers to order one. Kowald said manufacturing was being developed and discussed a hoped-for batch-production timeline of roughly six months, but that was a forecast made in 2021. It cannot be treated as proof that production ever began or that the aircraft is available now.

The practical takeaway
The SkySurfer was real experimental flight hardware, and Kowald was its inventor—not a supervillain. The Green Goblin label explains the video’s pop-culture impact, but it says little about the aircraft’s engineering maturity. The most responsible reading of the story is to separate Kowald’s documented prototype and stated safety work from claims that remain unverified: present-day legality, certification, commercial availability, and real-world rescue performance.
