Yes—the original two-wheeled Segway is discontinued. Segway-Ninebot announced in June 2020 that it would end manufacturing of the Segway Personal Transporter (Segway PT) on July 15, 2020. That decision ended production of the iconic self-balancing vehicle, not the Segway brand or the company’s other products.
When did Segway stop making the two-wheeled scooter?
Segway-Ninebot announced the production halt in June 2020, with manufacturing scheduled to end on July 15, 2020. A 2022 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission-hosted market report also records the traditional Segway PT’s production ending in July 2020.

The discontinued product was the Segway PT: a parallel-wheel, self-balancing personal transporter marketed in 2001. It is different from the stand-up electric kick scooters that Segway-Ninebot sells under the broader Segway name.
Why did Segway discontinue the original Segway?
The company gave economics as the direct reason. Segway president Judy Cai said the PT accounted for 1.5% of Segway-Ninebot’s revenue in 2019—a company revenue share, not a market-share or unit-sales figure.

- Effortless Maneuvering: Effortless controls and intuitive design make it easy for beginners to maneuver, while SegRide ensures superior stability, even on sharp turns and slippery roads.
- Built for Durability: With a high-strength aluminum alloy frame and rigorous durability testing, the MAX G3 is designed for long-term use, lasting through 12,427 miles of simulated random vibrations and over 500,000 suspension durability tests.

Contemporaneous reporting placed the decision in a wider shift toward shared micromobility, bicycles and conventional scooters. The PT remained visible in guided city tours, malls, airports and some security or law-enforcement work, but it had become a niche product rather than a major growth business.
Fast Company reported that roughly 140,000 PT vehicles had been sold over the product’s lifetime. That figure is separate from the company’s original plan to sell as many as 100,000 units in its first 13 months. Cai also identified durability as a commercial challenge: “We tried analyzing, how come sales cannot go up quickly? One reason, I hate to say, is the quality of it, how durable it is,” she told Fast Company.

Did Segway shut down?
No. Segway and Ninebot completed their strategic combination in April 2015, and the combined company continued selling other mobility products after PT production ended. Its product categories include self-balancing products and electric kick scooters.

Why was the PT difficult for some riders?
The PT’s two-wheel balancing system was distinctive, but it also created a learning curve. Tony Ho, then Segway’s vice president of global business development, said: “Some people like it . . . but we still have people the first time they get on a Segway PT they have to learn to balance.”
That learning requirement, along with the product’s specialized use cases and durability concerns, limited its appeal compared with simpler stand-up scooters and shared-bike systems.

Can existing owners still get parts or a replacement battery?
Availability is model-specific and cannot be confirmed from the historical discontinuation reports alone. A 2022 market report noted that replacement batteries were available for self-balancing scooters generally, but it did not establish that a particular battery fits any Segway PT model or that official support remains available today.
- Identify the exact PT model before ordering a battery or other part.
- Verify voltage, connector, dimensions and installation requirements against the model documentation.
- Check the seller’s current compatibility statement and return policy; listings and service terms can change.
- Do not assume a battery advertised for a generic self-balancing scooter is PT-compatible.
What the end of PT production meant
The July 2020 decision closed the manufacturing chapter for one of the early 21st century’s best-known personal transporters. Judy Cai acknowledged the reaction from owners, saying, “Given our decades-long history, we recognize that this decision may come as a disappointment to our strong and loyal following among private owners, who view the Segway as one of the more innovative creations of the early 21st century.”
