They are not always competing, mutually exclusive choices. Choose based on the layouts you need, who will maintain the site, what your theme and plugins support, and the builder’s current licensing terms—not on a blanket claim that one is faster or better.
What Gutenberg and a WordPress page builder mean
WordPress’s Block Editor—commonly called Gutenberg—became the default editor with WordPress 5.0 in December 2018. It is part of WordPress, not a separate commercial product. Pages and posts are assembled from blocks: individually editable elements such as paragraphs, headings, images, media, and embeds. Plugins can add more blocks.

The editor’s main parts include a block inserter, a content canvas, and a settings panel. WordPress also documents APIs developers can use to extend and manipulate the editor. Its Block Editor Handbook describes a block as “a discrete element such as a Paragraph, Heading, Media, or Embed.” WordPress Block Editor documentation · Block Editor Handbook

A page builder adds another way to create or edit page layouts. Depending on the product and setup, it may launch as a distinct editor or provide content that can be inserted into the Block Editor. Elementor, Beaver Builder, and Divi are examples, but their interfaces and capabilities are product-specific.
How the workflows differ
| Question | WordPress Block Editor (Gutenberg) | Additional page builder |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it come from? | Built into WordPress as its default editor for posts and pages. | Added through a builder product; available features depend on that product and the site’s setup. |
| How is content assembled? | With core blocks and, where installed, blocks supplied by plugins. | With the builder’s own editing workflow and features; exact controls vary by product. |
| Can the workflows coexist? | Yes, in some setups. Elementor documents inserting templates into the WordPress editor with Elementor Blocks for Gutenberg. Beaver Builder documents choosing “Launch Beaver Builder” or “Use Standard Editor” for a page. | |
| What should you verify? | Whether the theme and any block plugins provide the controls and layouts you need. | Whether the specific builder, theme, extensions, and licensing terms suit the site and its maintainers. |
Elementor’s integration guide, last updated March 20, 2024, says Elementor Blocks for Gutenberg requires WordPress 5.6 or later and Elementor. That is a documented integration, not evidence that every builder integrates the same way. Elementor Blocks for Gutenberg · Beaver Builder: Launch Beaver Builder
Which option fits your site?
Choose the Block Editor when block-based editing meets the brief
For structured posts and pages built from headings, text, images, media, and other standard content, start by checking what the Block Editor can do with your actual theme and installed plugins. This keeps the workflow within WordPress’s built-in editor and its documented block-extension model. It does not mean every theme offers the same layouts or design controls.

Consider a builder when its workflow or templates solve a specific need
If a project depends on specialized layouts or a particular builder’s templates and editing interface, evaluate that product against the requirements. Divi, for example, is presented by Elegant Themes as a WordPress theme and visual page builder; the company maintains a documentation collection labelled Divi 5. Those product descriptions identify a workflow to assess, not proof that it is the right choice for every site. Divi product page · Divi 5 documentation
Use both when the site genuinely needs both workflows
A builder does not automatically replace the Block Editor across the whole site. Some integrations let you insert builder content into the block-based workflow; others let you launch the builder for a particular page and return to the standard editor elsewhere. Confirm how the specific product handles the pages you plan to create before building around that arrangement.
Questions to answer before committing
- List the layouts you actually need. Separate routine posts and pages from specialized layouts or reusable templates. Check whether the theme and installed blocks already meet those needs.
- Try the workflow with the people who will use it. The site owner, publishing team, and future maintainer should be able to find the right editor and make ordinary updates without relying on the person who built the site.
- Map each required feature to its source. Identify what comes from WordPress core, the theme, the builder, or a plugin. Record which pages depend on each extension so you can assess the effect of changing or removing one.
- Verify site-wide design requirements. Check the actual theme and builder configuration for the templates and global styling you need. Do not assume a feature exists across every theme or product in a category.
- Check current licensing before purchase. Confirm the vendor’s current plan, site limits, renewal terms, and support terms for your use case. Elementor publishes a pricing page, but a price or comparable cost is not established here; verify the current offer directly. Elementor pricing plans
What this comparison cannot prove
The available official documentation establishes the editors’ roles, extension model, and examples of builder workflows. It does not establish which option is faster, scores better on Core Web Vitals, is more accessible, improves conversions, or is the most widely used. Those outcomes depend on the implementation and would require suitable comparative evidence. Treat claims about them as claims to verify, not as a reason to choose a builder or the Block Editor by default.
