This guide builds a local Node.js downloader with Playwright, explains viewport, full-page, and element captures, and shows what changes when you accept URLs from other people.
What the downloader does
A screenshot downloader is a small browser-automation program: it opens a URL in a real browser, waits for the page state you choose, captures pixels, and writes an image file. Playwright is a good starting point because its documentation covers JavaScript screenshots saved to disk, full-page captures, buffers, and element captures. Puppeteer documents a similar workflow; neither is universally faster or better for every project.

The example below is intended for local use with URLs you trust. It is an instructional example based on documented APIs, not a tested program. A public endpoint that accepts arbitrary URLs needs additional security controls described later.
Install Playwright and its browser
-
Install a current Node.js release supported by the Playwright version you choose.
-
Create a project and install Playwright:
npm init -y, thennpm install playwright. -
Install the Chromium browser binary:
npx playwright install chromium. The JavaScript package and browser executable are separate requirements; a missing browser or operating-system dependency can prevent launch. See the Playwright library installation guide. -
Because the example uses ES module imports, either save it as
screenshot.mjsor set"type": "module"in your project’spackage.json.Quick wins for a faster PC:

Build a local screenshot downloader
Save this as screenshot.mjs. It accepts a URL and optional output filename, validates that the input is an HTTP or HTTPS URL, creates a browser page with a fixed viewport, waits for the page’s load event, captures a full-page PNG, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const input = process.argv[2];
const outputPath = process.argv[3] ?? 'screenshot.png';
if (!input) {
console.error('Usage: node screenshot.mjs <url> [output.png]');
process.exit(1);
}
let url;
try {
url = new URL(input);
} catch {
console.error('Please provide a valid URL.');
process.exit(1);
}
if (!['http:', 'https:'].includes(url.protocol)) {
console.error('Only http:// and https:// URLs are supported.');
process.exit(1);
}
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
});
await page.goto(url.href, {
waitUntil: 'load',
timeout: 30_000,
});
await page.screenshot({
path: outputPath,
fullPage: true,
type: 'png',
});
console.log(`Saved screenshot to ${outputPath}`);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Run it with node screenshot.mjs https://example.com example.png. The output file is written relative to the current working directory unless you pass a different path. Check the Playwright screenshot guide and Page API for options that may change over time.
Choose when the page is ready
The right wait condition depends on the site and what you need in the image. The example waits for load, which waits for the page load event; it does not guarantee that every later-rendered widget, image, or application request has finished.

domcontentloaded: useful when the DOM is enough and you want to proceed without waiting for every load-dependent resource. -
networkidle: can help when a page settles after its requests finish, but analytics, streaming, polling, and other long-lived connections may prevent an idle state. It is not a universal readiness test. -
Wait for a specific selector when the screenshot depends on a known component, such as a report or product panel. Playwright’s page API documents locator-based waiting.
If you need application-specific readiness, wait for the element or state that signals it rather than assuming a generic network condition means the page is visually complete.
Pick the capture area and output
Viewport or full page
By default, a page screenshot captures the visible viewport. Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable document as one tall image. Full-page captures can be large, and pages that load content only while scrolling may need extra handling before capture.
Whole page or one element
Use a page screenshot for the complete visible page or document. To capture a single component, locate it and take an element screenshot:
const card = page.locator('.product-card');
await card.screenshot({ path: 'card.png', type: 'png' });
Choose a selector that identifies the intended element. A missing or non-unique selector can cause a timeout or target the wrong component. Playwright’s screenshot documentation also covers element capture.
PNG, JPEG, or WebP
PNG is lossless and is the default in the example. JPEG and WebP can produce smaller lossy files where supported. Quality settings apply to lossy formats, not PNG. Select the format based on what will consume the image: a lossless asset may suit detailed UI text, while a lossy image can be preferable when file size matters.
Viewport dimensions and scale
The example sets a 1280-by-800 CSS-pixel viewport. A page can lay out differently at another viewport width, so select dimensions that match the device or layout you want to represent. Device-pixel scaling affects the screenshot’s pixel dimensions and file size; a higher scale can make output sharper but larger. Playwright exposes screenshot scale options in its screenshot API.
Save a file or return bytes
Passing path writes the image to disk. To receive image bytes for an HTTP response or further processing, omit the path and keep the returned buffer:
const image = await page.screenshot({ fullPage: true, type: 'png' });
// For example, return image from a server handler with an image/png content type.
Keep the browser cleanup in a finally block so errors do not leave a browser process running. For a server, also ensure the handler sends the correct content type and does not expose arbitrary filesystem paths as output destinations.
Using Puppeteer instead
Puppeteer is a valid alternative if it is already part of your stack. Its screenshot guide documents navigating a page, capturing page or element screenshots, saving to a file, returning image bytes, and base64 output. Install the package and its browser setup according to the Puppeteer screenshots guide. Choose between Playwright and Puppeteer based on your team’s existing tooling and browser requirements; the available documentation does not establish a universal performance winner.

A local script aimed at sites you control has a different risk profile from a server that renders user-submitted URLs. A server-side browser makes network requests from your infrastructure. A malicious or simply unusual destination can redirect the browser, load subresources, or attempt to reach internal services.
URL parsing alone does not prevent server-side request forgery (SSRF). Before exposing a public endpoint, define and enforce a deployment-specific policy for:

Outbound network access, ideally restricted outside the browser process as well as in application logic.
-
Navigation and total job timeouts, response sizes, concurrency, and per-user limits.
-
Browser process isolation, filesystem permissions, and cleanup after failed jobs.
Playwright’s Docker guidance recommends isolation considerations for scraping or crawling untrusted sites and warns that its browser image is intended for testing and development, not visiting untrusted websites. It also recommends matching the image’s Playwright version to the project, using --init to avoid PID 1 process issues, and using --ipc=host for Chromium to reduce memory-related crashes. These are useful deployment notes, not a complete security policy. Review the current Playwright Docker guidance and add controls appropriate to your infrastructure.
Common errors and fixes
-
Browser executable is missing: install the browser binary with
npx playwright install chromium. In a container or fresh deployment, install the required browser and system dependencies there too. -
Browser launch fails on Linux or in a container: verify the system dependencies for the browser are installed and that the runtime can launch Chromium. For Docker deployments, follow the documented image and version guidance rather than assuming the JavaScript package alone is sufficient.
-
Navigation times out: the site may be slow or keep requests open. Set an appropriate timeout for your use case and reconsider the readiness condition; use a specific selector when that is a better signal than waiting for network idle.
-
The screenshot is blank or missing content: navigation may have completed before client-rendered content appeared. Wait for a relevant selector or application state, and check whether the site requires interaction or authentication.

The whole-page image is unexpectedly tall or incomplete: full-page capture covers the document, but lazy-loaded content may not appear until scrolled into view. Add deliberate scrolling or wait for the content your use case requires before capture.
-
The output file is not where expected: relative paths resolve from the process’s working directory. Pass an explicit output path and ensure the process has permission to write there.
-
Images vary between runs: dynamic content, rotating banners, fonts, viewport size, and timing can change the rendered page. Use a fixed viewport and a page-specific readiness condition; do not assume a live site is visually static.
Or skip the browser setup
If you would rather call a managed screenshot API than install and operate a browser, ScreenshotNeo takes one GET request with a URL and returns a screenshot or PDF. Here is the cURL form; the ScreenshotNeo documentation describes the API parameters.

Sources and version notes
Documentation changes over time. The Puppeteer screenshot guide showed version 25.12.0 at access, while the Playwright Docker page included 1.63.0 image examples; these are documentation examples observed on October 3, 2026, not a recommendation that every project use those exact versions. No performance benchmark or implementation test is claimed here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a website that requires login?
Yes, if you are authorized to access it. The browser must be given the required session or authentication, and your service should protect credentials and resulting images.
Does a screenshot downloader capture the page’s HTML source?
No. It captures the rendered visual output as image bytes. HTML extraction is a different task.
